If my boredom this evening is any indication
I’m not ready for the Tigers to be done playing baseball this year yet.
It was about 90 degrees today, and all they have here is hockey
no baseball, certainly no football. At least no professional football. Not that they’ll admit to.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!

Tame compared to SEC or Ohio State
But the NCAA is an awful organization.
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
Well okay. It's baseball.
But it’s not TIGERS baseball. But I’m interested to see how Greinke does.

I was happy to see it.
I was teaching a crochet class from 6-8 and at some point one of the ladies asked “I wonder how the Tigers are doing” and I checked and told her it was 7-2 on a home run by Raburn. Then the ladies and I chatted Tigers (and some Lions) until the end of class. :)

I had a chemistry exam on Wednesday – plus I missed a couple days of work with a sinus infection (which seems to be improving on its own, thankfully). Even as early as it is, I think if I closed my eyes I would be asleep pretty fast.

I think I got a B-ish on mine. Which is fine – I got an A on the first, he drops the lowest exam score, and I’m going to get a lot of points in the labs. I’ll be okay.

Usually our tests and classes aren't curved
But this professor doesn’t really understand exactly how much material is too much for a 2-hour exam.
that's why I did so well on the first one
He took one multi-part question – the hardest one – and made any points that people got on it bonus. That evened out some of the boneheaded mistakes I made because it was my first chemistry exam in nearly two decades.
Now my brain is finally feeling less like a lump of kludge and working at closer to what I consider acceptable levels.

I will be a lump of kludge in two weeks
I had two exams this week (one a take home version that took forever and a day to do). I have three more written exams and two practical exam in the next 10 days. I’m also going to Minnesota for a conference next weekend.
heh
The ladies at my class last night wondered how I worked full time and took a college course and found time to teach. :)
I had to confess that I wasn’t sure. I am glad I dropped the math class and just stuck with one. Even my workaholic sister said she only took one at a time while she was working full time. More than that and you just can’t put in a solid effort.

Should just make four super conferences in the North (Big ten), South (SEC), East (ACC) and West (Pac whatever). Create a division 1AAA and leave the pretenders like the MAC, Mountain West, Big East, C USA and what’s left of the Big 12 after all the good teams leave, in the dust

I had suggested that the Tigers might get Greinke if they'd also take Gil Meche
but then Meche generously retired, leaving $ 12 million on the table and saving the Royals a bundle. Milwaukee had a similar deal taking on most of Betancourt’s contract, helping KC unload two more big salaries, which was high on their priority list.

MOST of the time one club trades a star for prospects, even top prospects, they get burned
Saw this documented I think on MLBTR and the list of prospects that out performed the stars was pretty limited.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Which makes Cleveland's roster so impressive
A good portion of their core is prospects that they have received in trades.
They'll be a threat next year
specially with them playing basically a AAA squad in Sept.

Dombrowski deserves all the credit in the world for pulling that deal off. I still have no idea why Seattle pulled the trigger.
Not like they didn't get a good package
Ruffin is a near major league ready reliever with closer ceiling, Cisco Martinez is a steady 3B prospect, Casper and Charlie were already up in the bigs this season. I think it’s funny that they bought Luke French twice and gave us a starting pitcher back both times.

Big time
DD is looking like a genius and a shoo in for Exec of the year this season. Between the free agent signings last winter- Benoit and Victor, and even Penny; the mid season deals for Fister and Delmon (we won’t talk about Purcey); and getting Jhonny for a song and a pencil sharpener…. all brilliant.

Jeffress started the year on the roster, but was sent down to AAA, then AA
after completely losing control. He has great strikeout stuff but may not have the control to stick.
Cain is projected as the team’s OF of the future and only did not come up until the last week because the team was unable to trade Melky Cabrera.

Is this where MLB is headed?
Starters who pitch 5 innings(or less.) Then, a stacked bullpen of 5 or 6 guys who can all throw hard and get guys out?
Was wondering while contemplating Nolan Ryan saying he was going to push his starters and not pay attention to pitch counts, while he’s built his team around a bunch of 5 inning starters and a stacked ’pen. A bit of a contradiction?
Are guys like Verlander and CC the last stand?

I think that's just Tony LaRussa and the NL in general
Problem is that so many lineups work the count that even with a higher pitch count the starters are out of the game more quickly, and few guys have the stuff to fool the same hitters multiple times.
I think it will be more based on individual pitchers.

And now tonight…………and have seen this before on a few occasions. Makes me wonder.
An all RH’d starting staff, 5 or 6 lefties in the ‘pen, and a RH’d closer? Would that be optimal? Things that make ya go: hmmmmmmm.
Justin can now let the fungus grow back on his shower shoes.
It might be the managers.
If a manager leaves a starter in “too long” he gets hammered and could lose his job if too many games are lost. If he goes with the matchups, even if he still fails and the team loses, he gets a pass because “he made the right moves.”
A manager would have to be very confident in his position and his knowledge of his own players to know who to leave in and who not to.

A couple of factors
- they get a day of rest between games to travel
- they never save guys for the next game because everything is on the line
- most clubs have an extra starter in the bullpen that they can go to early, as opposed to the usual mop up man
and I think that managers are just more nervous and tend to over manage in big situations
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!

We have starters who are capable of going deep into games and a manager who trusts them to do so.

I need to double check, but I think at some point one of the talking heads said that Detroit didn’t commit any errors in the series against the Yankees. I find that hard to believe and remarkable if true.

Bullpen guys may be a "dime a dozen", but if you expect to progress in the postseason, you need more
When you consider a guy like Benoit costs 5-ish MM a year? Then you take the $12MM it cost for Phillips and sign to top notch relievers. Add them to Valverde/Benoit/Coke … and you’ve really got something. The difference between Phillips and Sizemore won’t come close to the difference two veteran relievers will make on our staff. I’ll take Sizemore and two veteran outstanding relievers, you take Phillips. I think the Tigers are better in my scenario.

This is where we disagree
The difference between Phillips and Sizemore won’t come close to the difference two veteran relievers will make on our staff.
Either you’re overrating the hell out of Scott Sizemore or overestimating the impact of the 4th and 5th relievers of a pitching staff on a team’s level of success in both the regular season and the playoffs. Brandon Phillips is miles better than Sizemore. Plug him into the black hole that was the #2 lineup spot and 2nd base this season, and we’re looking at 100 wins in the regular season. Plug him into this playoff roster and we might be the ones up 3-2 heading back to Texas, if not already in the World Series.

Overrating the hell out of someone? You act like Phillips is Joe Morgan.

The Tigers soft underbelly is their middle relief!
The difference betwen Sizemore and Phillips won’t come close to the run prevention by curing middle relief.
Justin can now let the fungus grow back on his shower shoes.
by Singledigit on Oct 14, 2011 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Here's what Phillips brings to the table
He was 6.0 WAR this season. The Tigers’ 2nd base position was 2.2 WAR. Roughly speaking, we’re at 99 regular season wins right there, and that’s just offensively. Defensively, Phillips’ UZR was 11.4. The Tigers’ 2nd base position: -5.5.
There is no way that improving the middle relief over what the Tigers had this season (remember, 82-0 when leading after 7 innings, only 2 losses when leading after 6) is worth the 4ish WAR that Phillips would have been.
by Rob Rogacki on Oct 14, 2011 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Career OBP
Brandon Phillips .322
Scott Sizemore .329
The Tigers would be well served to have Brandon Phillips in their lineup. IF, the opportunity cost wasn’t so high. At $12MM? For a second baseman? Who gets on base less than Scott Sizemore?
That was my point. Better the Tigers held on to Sizemore, put him in the 2 and left him there, and then spend the $12MM on something else. You don’t like relief? Okay, pick something else. How about CJ Wilson?
Okay, I take Sizemore and CJ Wilson over Phillips.
Justin can now let the fungus grow back on his shower shoes.
by Singledigit on Oct 14, 2011 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions
I'd take Sizemore and CJ Wilson over Phillips too
But that’s not what you originally stated. We just switched from replacing the 4th and 5th relievers to replacing Brad Penny with what would arguably be the best #2 starter in the AL.
Sizemore’s career OBP is based on 158 Major League games. Phillips has matched or topped that figure in each of the past 3 seasons despite having literally half the walk rate that Sizemore does.
by Rob Rogacki on Oct 14, 2011 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Of course, Sizemore's sample is smaller.
But his skill of getting on base has been there for his entire professional career. It’s not like Phillips, who has only exhibited this skill in the past year(his contract year……..surprising?)
What I originally stated was the Tigers should have kept Sizemore and spent the money elsewhere. The opportunity cost of $12MM is not something wasted on a second baseman. The difference between Phillips and Sizemore isn’t nearly enough to warrant that opportunity cost. Phillips is good, but he’s not THAT good. Not good enough to outweigh keeping Sizemore and using the $12MM elsewhere.
Relief, starting pitching, whatever. The Tigers IMO should have kept Sizemore, played him in the 2 all this season and allowed him to do what he does best. Get on base.
Spending $12MM on any second baseman not named Joe Morgan would be silly. Again … IMO.
Justin can now let the fungus grow back on his shower shoes.

Phillips' stats for the past 3 seasons
.276/.329/.447 with 20 HR and 98 RBI in ’09
.275/.332/.430 with 18 HR and 59 RBI in ’10
.300/.353/.457 with 18 HR and 82 RBI in ’11
It’s also interesting to note that Phillips’ power has dipped over the past two seasons (hovering around .155 ISO after 3 seasons of .170+) and is scoring more runs (194 runs scored in the past two years). I wonder if he’s changed his approach at the plate with the changing personnel in the lineup around him in Cincinnati, specifically the emergence of Jay Bruce and Joey Votto in the middle of the order.
by Rob Rogacki on Oct 15, 2011 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions
Of course, we can leave rbi out of the discussion
Sizemore wouldn’t be hitting in the middle of the order. Playing full time for the first time for the A’s, Sizemore went .249/.345/.433 for an OPS of .778. Phillips’ OPS last year was .810. Do you honestly think that difference is worth $11.5MM in salary?
Keep Sizemore. He won’t quite come up to Phillips’ numbers, but the difference won’t be enough to not look elsewhere to spend your money. And THAT was my point.
Justin can now let the fungus grow back on his shower shoes.
by Singledigit on Oct 15, 2011 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions
To illustrate why I'm not impressed with relievers
Here are the WAR numbers for some of our bullpen guys this season (remember that WAR takes high-leverage situations into account)
Jose Valverde: 1.0
Joaquin Benoit: 1.3
Al Al: 1.3
Daniel Schlereth: -0.3
Ryan Perry: 0.2
If you were to replace Perry and Schlereth with Benoit and Al Al equivalents, we’re still only looking at a jump of 2.7 WAR, a fair bit below the 3.8 that Phillips was above the 2nd base position. This also assumes that the relievers replacing Perry and Schlereth would see the same high leverage situations that Benoit and Al Al do in their current roles that boost their WAR to those levels in the first place.
On the other hand, the difference between CJ Wilson and Brad Penny was 5.1 WAR (5.9 to 0.8) this season. Like I said before, I’d take Wilson and Sizemore over Phillips any day, and the statistics back this up.
Basically, replacing two relievers is going to give you nowhere near the same return that replacing your worst starter (and the AL’s worst in terms of WAR for pitchers with enough IP) with one of the best starters in the AL (4th in the league in WAR).
by Rob Rogacki on Oct 14, 2011 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions
You put more faith in WAR than I do
It’s like OPS for lead off hitters. It undervalues them. WAR for relievers does the same.
Plus, WAR doesn’t take into account opportunity cost of money spent. Yes, WAR loves players like Phillips. But according to the WAR you’ve posted for Phillips, he’s barely less valuable than Cabrera. Do I have that wrong?
Does Brandon Phillips even belong on the same page as Miguel Cabrera?
WAR is not math. It is a variable, and subjective.
Justin can now let the fungus grow back on his shower shoes.
by Singledigit on Oct 15, 2011 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions
So is cost
Phillips doesn’t belong in the same league as Cabrera, and thus makes about half as much money. Even with a bump in pay in this next contract, he probably won’t push north of $15 million per season. As we’ve already covered, I’d much rather spend that $15 million on CJ Wilson if the opportunity presents itself, but if that doesn’t happen then I’d spend that same money on Phillips before a couple other bullpen guys.
And for comparison’s sake, Cabrera is sitting at an average of $21.5 million over the next 4 seasons.
by Rob Rogacki on Oct 15, 2011 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions
But Rob
The discussion was does Phillips warrant the difference in his salary vs Sizemore’s salary, and the opportunity cost of spending the ducats elsewhere.
Give me Sizemore, as I earlier stated, and ANY other signings for the $11.5MM difference. Relief pitchers, a starter, a new third baseman. Whatever. Brandon Phillips doesn’t come close to making up for the difference of keeping Sizemore and signing other pieces.
Justin can now let the fungus grow back on his shower shoes.
by Singledigit on Oct 15, 2011 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions
And my answer is "it depends on what you're spending it on"
I was trying to illustrate (crudely, I’ll admit) that investing in an improvement at 2nd base (Phillips) is more valuable than investing in middle relief guys that are only going to give you maybe 40-50 innings in an entire season. Upgrading at starting pitcher (especially the extreme upgrade we proposed) is more valuable than a Phillips vs. Sizemore upgrade. Other positions depend on who we’re talking about replacing.
Money aside, it’s extremely hard to assess what kind of difference a guy like Brandon Phillips would have on a team like the Tigers over the course of the season. Adding money into the equation just makes it even tougher to decipher.
This is my last comment of the night on this topic because I have to get some other stuff done, but I just wanted to say that I enjoyed our discussion. Unfortunately, I think that this whole situation is a moot point because Sizemore is gone and I don’t think the Tigers will even sniff an opportunity to pick up Phillips or Wilson in the offseason.

OF COURSE Phillips is better than Sizemore. At least right now. BUT, that doesn’t take into account the cost, the opportunity cost for the differences in salary, and whether those differences can be spent elsewhere more productively.
Phillips is better’n Sizemore……..but not enough to justify the $11.5MM in salary. Keep Sizemore, spend the money elsewhere. The Tigers are better off.

They could still get a hefty package for Phillips
No reason to sell themselves short when they have Type A picks heading their way if he leaves.

and he said that he won't accept arbitration
but I still think the return would be better than 2 picks to trade him.

I wish the MLB 2K series didn't suck so much :(

The only straight-up loser in the Holiday swap-fest last year
Was Oakland. Traded Cargo zoom to get him than traded him to St. Louis where he stopped sucking. Can’t remember what the As got back for him but it can’t be anywhere near what they gave up

HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION TIME
Let’s say that the baseball gods smile upon us and CJ Wilson signs for like $12-15 million a year for 4 years. Then we package Jackson, random minor leaguer and either Porcello/Turner for Gonzalez.
Commence drooling.

Brewers will have to regroup at home.
It would help if they didn’t commit FOUR ERRORS in one game.

The first error was hilarious
Hellen Keller could have made that play. And it cost them 2 runs

Remember it took Milwaukee all 5 games in the first round to beat the Dbacks. Even if they somehow advance they’ll get stomped out in the WS

I was referring to Milwaukee who will get eaten by Texas or Detroit
St. Louis is fueled by mediocrity so they’re a completely different story

Anything you recommend I hit up while I’m at the ballpark in Arlington?
