Bless You Boys Podcast 22: I assume game 7 will kill me!
The ALCS takes a break, giving the staff of Bless You Boys time to crank out our 22nd podcast. And we finally have other editors joining Al and Kurt to talk about the Tigers- Rangers ALCS. 4 talking heads are better than 2!
Bless You Boys Podcast 22 runs 1:12 and features managing editor Kurt Mensching, deputy editor Rob Rogacki, and your host, deputy editor Al Beaton. Everyone's favorite pontificating run differential zealot, David Tokarz, joins the podcast about 30 minutes into the show.
Topics discussed included:
- How are the editors holding up after another stressful series?
- Did Joe Posanski throw Justin Verlander under the bus in his media takedown?
- Miguel Cabrera's double off 3rd base, just plain lucky or bounces evening out?
- Injuries are not an excuse, they are a fact.
- Tigers' starters are out pitching the Rangers' starters...but the Tigers are down 3-2.
- Grading Jim Leyland's post season.
- Name your Tigers' ALCS MVP through 5 games. The 3rd base bag gets a vote.
- Listener questions ran the gamut: Odds of winning the ALCS, lineup black holes, channeling your inner Mlive.com commenter to point fingers, Ryan Raburn, fearing Nelson Cruz, Austin Jackson's struggles, the Cruz - Verlander "staredown", the Tigers' bullpen playing in an NL park, a eulogy for Magglio Ordonez and JonMoz contributes another lightning round!
In case you were wondering, we managed to get in several mentions of Brandon Inge. We won't ever have a BYB Podcast without Binge.
Final thoughts: David likes him some Dave Dombrowski, Rob welcomes newcomers, Kurt is damn hungry, and Al doesn't miss TBS.
We LOVE to hear from you. If you would like to have your question on next week's podcast, please email us at BYBPodcast at Gmail.com.

Is there any point in me trying to be brief if you're all going to keep making fun of me?

No
Don’t be brief, say what you have to say. I don’t want to be the only long winded person on this site! Analysis is a good thing. Let it fly.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
but not on the podcast when we're trying to finish it up within an hour or so
besides we’ll make fun of david no matter what he does. It’s how we roll.

I thought David did great, concise and to the point
But every baseball site needs a run differential zealot, too.
I'm owner/editor of The Wayne Fontes Experience a deputy editor at Bless You Boys, host the Bless You Boys Podcast and co-host The Knee Jerks podcast.
I like the mix of opinions and statisticians on BYB
I think that DT brings a lot to the discussion, both on the podcast and in the discussion threads. Maybe it’s my like for that kind of analysis and information, but I think that, of all the Tiger websites, the discussion on here is much more interesting than others, and this is a good part of the reason. We get good analysis here without being too sabermetrical, IMO.

Agreed.
Justin can now let the fungus grow back on his shower shoes.
I think too much is being made of our hitting or lack of hitting.
Can we give any credit to the pitching that we’ve been facing?
We’ve scored 37 runs in 10 games or 3.7 runs per game.
During the regular season:
NYY had a team ERA of 3.73
Texas had a team ERA of 3.79
So aren’t we doing about what we should be doing against their pitching?
But we're not facing any 5th starters or Mop-up men either
This is top of line pitching we’re facing.
We've been doing above average
I would say that winning the division going away, beating the Yankees in the playoffs, and right now being only 2 games from the WS is way above average performance.
I think the criticism of the offense is warranted
The Tigers have had the Rangers’ starters on the ropes virtually every game, but left runners on base. It can’t be said that they were shut down by good pitching as far as the Rangers’ rotation is concerned. When they get into the bullpen, Texas has been very good, but the Tigers still could be more productive if they’d force them to throw strikes. It seems pretty clear that the book on many of the Tiger hitters is that you don’t have to throw them strikes, because they’ll chase sliders six inches off the outside corner all day long. Five hits isn’t going to win many games for you. Better plate discipline will lead to better opportunities, more hits, and more runs.

AL playoff team scoring average vs. regular season
Texas: 4.44 playoffs, 5.27 regular season
Detroit: 3.70 playoffs, 4.85 regular season
New York: 5.60 playoffs, 5.35 regular season
Tampa: 5.25 playoffs, 4.36 regular season
Interesting that New York and Tampa are the teams out of the playoffs
Despite increasing their scoring in the playoffs. Huh.

Tampa did too?
I knew the Yankees did. Shows you how much attention I paid to the other series.

THANK YOU FOR ACCEPTING THAT INJURIES ARE A REASON NOT AN EXCUSE
That makes me want to punch people in the face. It isn’t making excuses to say that someone can’t perform at their best when they are hurting. It’s one thing to say “I didn’t pitch well because I have the sniffles” but another thing to say “I can’t hit well because three limbs are falling off.”
SO ANGRY AT THAT.

I don't think that they are 100% the reason for some players' struggles
But they are definitely a contributing factor

I think the point that JL is making is that they can't use injuries as an excuse for not winning.
Injuries are a part of the game, and teams need to have depth to overcome them. The players have bought into this concept completely and they’re out there, playing their hearts out despite the stiffer odds of winning. The media and fans can say what they like, but there is not an ounce of quit in this team. It is what it is, and they’re dealing with the reality of the situation. If anything, they have to reach down even deeper for something extra. Thursday’s win will give them a huge boost, IMO, and they can come out in Texas with all barrels blazing.

ture, true
I just hate that (mostly fans, some media) act as though they shouldn’t even count as a factor. Of COURSE every team should carry two extra top-notch outfielders just in case they lose a couple of starters. Most teams can’t carry that much depth because their depth players are fill-ins for short periods when the starters are injured.
When people dismiss injuries as though they are insignificant it makes me furious.

Don't get infuriated.....
“When people dismiss injuries as though they are insignificant it makes me furious.”
When fans start spouting irrational theories, I find it helpful to dismiss them as insignificant. It’s not worth getting furious at fans (who are, after all “fanatics”) for their rants. For most fans, baseball is a release- we all do it in various ways- and I think you have to just let them vent. You decide how much effort you want to put into showing them the light. If they still don’t get it, just move on and enjoy the game. On the other hand, if you see the Tigers or their management using injuries as a crutch and lowering their own expectations, that’s the time to take issue with it. For me, I’ve already chalked up this season as a smashing success and I’ve had a wonderful summer because of it. This team has met and exceeded all expectations so far. Of course a world championship is the goal, and of course the odds are against us, but I’m still enjoying the ride, and I’m not going to let any misguided fans infuriate me.

Tilting at windmills and all that.
Whatever happens to end this season, I could not be prouder of how this team has performed.

For all the teasing of David
I don’t think he was wordy at all. Besides, his words make sense and I give him a lot of credit for not babbling a long time while saying nothing (which means he has no future in calling games for TBS or Fox, unfortunately).
