Dave Dombrowski - Make my offseason
There's no giving up hope with these boys this year - there just isn't. This is going to be 8 games premature (two wins v. TX and 4 in 6 against St. Louis), but DD, I ask but two things of you in the coming months to make me a happy Tigers' fan:
1) First priority, re-sign the Man of the Hour - D. Young. 5 homers so far in the playoffs and a revitalized outlook on baseball now that he's out of that joke of a state in Minnesota. He will be a steal for a former top draft pick who's shown he can produce (last year with MN, this year after a trade to Detroit). Not terribly expensive and he likes playing here. Give the man a 3-year deal.
2) You have $25M coming off the books with Guillen and Maggs - I love both of them and they have both been great in Tiger uniforms, but neither will be worth the money it would cost. With that money, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do everything you can to get Aramis Ramirez to come play third. I know second base sucks, and I know we need another reliever or two, but there's not a lot out there in free agency for those positions. Think of a lineup with Cabby, V-Mart, Peralta, Avila, Brennan, Young, Aramis... and sure, Austin Jackson, too. I don't hear a lot of complaints about Rhino these days (until April - June) and the 'pen is fine. Turner is coming up and will struggle, but ultimately, he'll be ok. There's not a lot at second and DD has money to spend. Get Ramirez and win 100+ games in this AL Central.
I said it. I believe it. These two moves are the keys to dominating next season.
Now, you all can hate on it in the comments. But make me a happy man, DD. Win the series this year and get even better next year. Oh, one more thing - Teach Jackson to make contact or move him down in the lineup. The sun sets in the west and Austin Jackson strikes out 3+ times in the playoffs - not exactly a lead off man. I know it's Smokey's call, but come on... STOP.

AJax had his sophmore slump and an injury
Last year, he was one of the leagues best lead-off hitters, was 2nd in Runs Scored (101), 3rd in Batting Avg (.291), 4th in OBP (.341).
This year, he was probably one of the worst, but he was still 3rd in Runs Scored (87). He was last in Batting Avg (.246) and 11th in OBP (.314). IMO, he wasn’t swinging the bat well for about 1/2 of the season. He was most brutal back in April. Then factor in that he had an injured wrist in July and much of August, where his hitting was brutal once again.
I don’t understand why we’d ever give Young a 3 year deal (or making that cheap shot on the state of Minnesota). He’ll likely be back in Detroit next season, but he doesn’t have any leverage to demand a multi-year contract. He still has 2 years left of arbitration eligibility and he’s not the kind of player that draws a lot of interest from many teams. He scares a lot of GM’s away because he’s a defensive liability.
About ARam, I wouldn’t want to see us invest heavily into him. He’ll be 34 years old next season, so he’ll likely be hitting his decline fairly soon. If he’ll take a one year deal with a 2nd year option, and wants to be on a contender, we might have a shot at getting him. I’m sure some crappy team will be desperate enough to offer him a 3 year deal though. Also remember that we got Nick Castellanos coming up in a few seasons, so we won’t be looking for anything long-term beyond 2 years.
So I’m all for having Young and ARam for the next 1 or 2 seasons, I just wouldn’t make a long-term commitment to either player.
I agree on both accounts
I bet ARam get more than three years from somebody at over 10M annually.

A couple things...
1) It’s only $23M coming off coming off the books ($13M for Guillen and $10M for Ordonez). It goes up to $26M if you want to include Brad Penny.
2) $7.25M ($12.85M to $20.1M) of the money coming off the books is going to Justin Verlander’s extension he signed. So really, the Tigers have $18.75M to play with in the offseason.
3) If they do tender Delmon Young a contract, he’ll probably see around a $1M increase from $5.375M he made this year. So, that gives the Tigers roughly $12.375M to use in free agency and their other restricted free agents (a class which Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello highlight).
I think the Tigers would be best to not tender him a contract and sign him to a cheaper deal. I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be looking for $6+M on the open market.
I don’t know how I’d feel about signing Aramis Ramirez. I guess it all comes down to the money he gets. While he’d definitely give a boost to the offense, he’d hurt the Tigers defensively.
Why wouldn't you include Brad Penny?
Seriously, is that even a decision?
by Pregaminglife on Oct 15, 2011 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions
There's more
on the savings side, Santiago and Zumaya at 1.4 mil apiece
Brad Thomas probably gets non tendered
On the cost side, Delmon is about a 7 mil increase over last year’s opening day payroll. Betemit makes another 1 mil, and they either bring him back or get another 3B.
In arbitration, we have Scherzer and Coke, who will get increases for about another 5 mil combined.
Then, there will be vacancies created at 3B, SP, and 2B, plus glaring holes in the !, 2, and 3 spots in the lineup. I don’t see solutions internally for any of those vacancies.
I also think that payroll is going up.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
True
But while you list holes at 3B, 2B and SP and in the lineup, getting rid of Betemit (if you’re not going to trust him in the playoffs at all, cut ties) only opens a hole at 3B. Re-signing Delmon gives us a #3 or #6 hitter. Austin Jackson isn’t going anywhere at #1 (God knows why, but seriously, Smokey loves him). Turner is a lock to make the starting rotation, filling in for Penny. Rayburn isn’t really an answer, but there isn’t a whole lot out there available for second base, so he’s likely getting the first crack at it (where everyone will whine and complain until July). So really, that just leaves 3B as an open spot that can realistically filled via free agency. Enter Ramirez. I’ve heard the complaints – he’s turning 34, he’s expensive, he’s cursed from the Cubs lol – But that’s a lot of what was said about a guy like Maggs when he came over, except Maggs was coming off risky surgery. Ramirez has always hit and will continue to hit for the next few years for sure, especially if you give him Detroits lineup protection. His defense isn’t great, but is Betemit’s? Is Inge’s anymore? Pay the man to fill the hole at third. Your 2012 lineup would be: Jackson, Boesch, Delmon, Miggy, V-Mart, Aramis, Peralta, Avila, Rhino. Rotation of: Verlander, Fister, Scherzer, Porcello and Turner.
I really don’t see a problem with any of that.

I don't think Turner is a lock
I bet they’ll sign a free agent similar to Penny…maybe a little riskier than Penny, but certainly somebody that will have a leg up on the job heading into Spring Training. I also think it will be somebody that could, in theory, lose the job and swing into long relief without a beef. I’m thinking of a Freddie Garcia style signing where he’s expected to fight for the job a bit. Then, if Turner beats him in the spring, you can think about giving Turner the job. (I also think that Oliver, Wilk, Smyly, Below and maybe even a couple of others could land that 5th job if the cards fall right.)

I'd bet on a signing
I’d also bet that he won’t finish the year in the rotation.

No,
He’ll be on a pitch count. But who cares? We didn’t need 5 pitchers for the playoffs this season, and I’d like to think we’ll have the division wrapped up by early September when he’s tapped out. Better than spending money on another Penny, if you ask me (which I realize you aren’t lol).

Or
You could limit his innings in Toledo (5-6 IP per start) and have him available in the post-season.

I'd rather plead to Jim Leyland right now

which will bring more revenue to bring in more players!

I think a true lead off guy would be a better pick up
I’m not gonna say Reyes, but Reyes haha.
Seriously though, if the tigers could get a legit high OBP lead-off man, Jackson could be solid in the two hole. He CAN handle the bat a little bit if needed, and he might develop a little more pop.
It’s a pipe dream I guess, especially because there aren’t guys like that on the market really. At least not ones that don’t carry high price or high risk.
Reyes' career OBP is just .341
and over the past 3 season’s his OBP is .352
That’s really not much better than AJax’s career .331 OBP.
Point taken
I was just looking for an example. Either way, a true leadoff type would be nice in Detroit. For once.

What about Brandon Phillips?
He could hit leadoff, take pressure off Ajax and provide fold glove play at second. This is of course if the reds don’t sign him
One thing you guys left out
Raburn >= Sizemore
And we still have Raburn.
I'd prefer Cano, if the Yanks decline his option (yeah, right!)
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Darvish and Reyes please
Now back to real life. Ramirez and Keppinger (assuming he is non-tendered) would be a good haul. I’d be tempted to go after Grady Sizemore, as well. Also, could Doumit or Shoppach back up Alex? I dont think we’ll make a splash but I think we’ll come out with an extremely solid team.
Meh on Darvish and Reyes
Giving Ramirez a Martinez style deal (4 years, 50 or 60 million) would be nice, but I wouldn’t go past that. And I think all we need to do is add a 3B, resign Young for LF and maybe find a cheap 2B option. Inge/Raburn could handle that next year.

You do not meh Yu Darvish!
The increased revenues from Japan would be awesome!
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
That is a good point about the revenues,
but you have to have some thought that he could go the way of the fat toad.
as much as i would love Darvish...
i doubt he’d be worth the posting fee and the contract.
while he’s an elite japanese arm and young, i don’t think he would want to come to a market such as detroit (nothing against detroit, but we are not big in the asian player market, which would be concerning if we were not big in latin america)
also, japanese or any foreign player for that matter, are always a crapshoot, much like the draft. while he could be a completely dominating pitcher, he also may end up being a complete scrub. now, with his pure stuff and strength along with his track record, it’s very unlikely he becomes a bust, but as with any elite prospect, you never know.
rambling aside, i would love Darvish on the tigers. it would bring a big asian market to detroit, and a really good looking prospect, but one) i don’t know if the tigers would/could outbid teams for negotiations and two) i don’t know if Darvish would want to go to the D.

Starting Pitching
The first thing we need is a solid left handed starter. I would trade Porcello if I had to to get that guy. Sherzer should be no more than a 5th starter ( way to inconsistant). Come on now everybody knows we need a 2nd and 3rd baseman ( hopefully a leadoff hitter out of 1 of those spots). For those not old enough to remember the 2011 team mirrors the 1967 team and with a few changes would pull it off in 2012 like the 68 team did.
I wouldn't worry about our starting pitchers
especially when we only need a solid 5th starter and we need 4 good starters in the playoffs. I would be completely fine with filling our 5th spot with Below or Pauley. Our rotation was our biggest strength these playoffs. Asking Verlander and Fister to repeat what they did this year is a bit unrealistic, but Scherzer and Porcello improving from their struggles should negate that.
If we REALLY wanted a SP, I would wait until 2013. Cain, Greinke, Haren, Baker, Hamels, Shields and Danks all come off the books that year.

I'm hoping we don't need to sign big contract SP
Our minor league system suggests it’s the one area that we can hopefully fill from within, especially since I believe we are decent at #1-4. With three or four guys in the high minors that are close to MLB ready, some with ceilings as high as #1 or 2 starters, we shouldn’t need to make a big SP signing in the next 3 or 4 years.
With Tigerdog’s numbers somewhere, we really only have about 10M or less to play with next season unless payroll increases. Now, Tigerdog thinks, and I agree, that payroll might increase. However, if it doesn’t, we’re left with holes at 2B, 3B, and SP5 to fill for 10M.
If 3B doesn’t go well on the free agent or trade market, I think it’s very possible we’ll see an Inge / Kelly combination.
If 2B doesn’t go well, we could see Worth / Raburn. I think 2B or 3B will probably be addressed somehow, but I doubt it will be both.

Kelly Johnson?
He’s an enigma but so tempting. Won’t cost a draft pick, still relatively young, bats left, good on base skills, good pop, I guess above average feilding if defensive metrics can be trusted.
He is hella streaky though … anyways Aramis seems like the kind of guy DD likes to target. I can live with that.
I'd take Hariston Jr.
