ALCS Game 6 preview: Scherzer vs. Holland
ALCS: Texas leads Detroit, 3-2
Probable pitchers:
RHP Max Scherzer (4.40 ERA, 3.70 xFIP, 8.03 K/9, 2.58 BB/9 )
Hitter to Fear: Ian Kinsler (.308 BA, .862 OPS vs. Scherzer), Nelson Cruz (general principle)
Hitter to Fail: Elvis Andrus (.133 BA, .369 OPS)
at
LHP Derek Holland (3.95 ERA, 3.76 xFIP, 7.36 K/99, 3.05 BB/9)
Hitter to Fear: Miguel Cabrera (small sample)
Hitter to Fail: Alex Avila (small sample)
Keys to note:
1. Derek Holland worked high in the strike zone against Detroit (per Fangraphs story). It probably wasn't by choice. He allowed four walks, four hits and three runs in 2 2/3 innings. However, Detroit failed to capitalize for even more runs and couldn't do anything against the bullpen. Will Holland improve? Can the Tigers make him pay if he doesn't?
2. The Tigers need to play mistake-free defense. They may not be known for being a defensive gem, but they've made some mistakes we're not accustomed to. Can't give Texas any second chances or allow the crowd to get too into the game.
3. Score first. Preferably in the first inning.
On deck: Hopefully Game 7 on Sunday.

Not only score first, but also score lots. Then score some more.

Jim Leyland: Rick Porcello is available out of the bullpen tonight. #Tigers
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
If Leyland uses Porcello tonight, I think it is in long relief following a bad outing by Max. Otherwise, there won’t be an option for tomorrow since I don’t think Verlander pitches in Game 7 at all.

He said he'd use Rick if he needed someone before the 7th inning
I take that to include the 7th, but we might see Coke against a lefty in the 7th
or we may see Benoit in the 7th, depending.
If we don’t win tonight, there are no options for tomorrow, anyway. No point in saving anyone when there’s no tomorrow.

Does anyone have a good explanation
as to why Leyland keeps telling Texas who is not available for this game or the next game? I know the press keeps asking, but I don’t know any coach in any sport that would do this. (think Stanley Cup playoffs or Bill Belicheck) If it is to instill confidence in the rest of the players, I am not sure that outweighs giving Washington a coaching advantage. It seems if they unavailable then fine, but why tell everyone? I love Leyland, but I just don’t understand.
because that information
isn’t going to help or hurt Texas. if Leyland kept them guessing about JV, they wouldn’t play all scared with that in the back of their mind. I don’t really mind him saying who’s available and who’s not.

Leyland is playing Mr. Nice Guy.
It probably annoys the hell out of Ron Washington.
In a crucial at bat, coaches really focus on lefty/righty matchups.
Also if extra innings come into play, Texas knows already that our bullpen/bench is limited and could influence their decisions (who to pinch hit, pinch run, risks on the basepaths, etc.). I am not saying it is a huge advantage, I just don’t recall other managers doing this and wondered his rationale for doing so.
Or maybe he's taking a page out of W's playbook
Shock and Awe.

Leyland re: transparency of decisions, like announcing no Verlander Game 7. “I just don’t think there are a lot of secrets. Maybe I am dumb.”

Won’t be that many of us, but you can tell who we are by the OED caps.
2 more games against these Rangers, and then on to kick some NL azz in the World Series! Here’s hoping the offense scores early, and often.

With the prospect of Fister staring the Rangers in the face
Tonight is Game 7 for the Rangers, IMO. I bet they are feeling that too.
The Rangers will leave nothing in the tank, trying to win this game. Ron Washington isn’t prepared to make the correct decisions. I’m betting JL has his way with Washington, as Ron will be desperate and manage with that in mind.
Look for JL to make all the “right” calls, and Washington to panic. Leading to a Tiger victory.
