I think the coaches just didn't put him in a good position to succeed
They did very little to slow down MSU’s blitz packages and weren’t very deceptive with their playcalling.

You all have inspired me to look it up:
In February 2011, a virus infected a nerve in Joe Buck’s left vocal cord. That kind of injury would certainly scare me if I were him. Apparently, the result of the infection was hoarseness. He has been taking singing lessons and vocal training to deal with the nerve ailment.
While I’m not a ear, nose and throat doctor, I honestly don’t think that such an ailment would cause him to be as boring as he is. He projects naturally as he speaks and his voice teachers are likely keeping him healthy, so I don’t feel bad pointing out how boring he has been for years. (Obviously, I hope he has recovered fully.)
