A great season ends, not with a bang...but a whimper. Rangers end Tigers' year with malice, 15-5

Congratulations to the Texas Rangers. They are deserving AL champions.

BOX

KEY STAT A

It's all about the bottom of the  3rd inning, which will go down in Tigers' infamy.

Via @FreepTigers:

Texas scores nine in the bottom of the third. Most runs in an inning in postseason history for Rangers.

Want to feel worse?

Via ESPN Stats & Info:

Rangers are 5th team to score 9+ runs in an inning in a postseason game. Last to do it was Angels in 2002 ALCS Game 5 vs Twins (10 runs)

Between the 1st and 2nd outs of the fateful 3rd inning, 9 consecutive Rangers reached base. There was your ballgame.

KEY STAT B

Max Scherzer's line: 2.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 1 K.

Blue eye Max was on the mound for a couple of innings, then brown eyed Max decided to show up. All Hell broke loose for brown eyed Max  in the 3rd, ultimately leaving the game with the bases loaded...after Nelson Cruz struck out on a checked swing, and Scherzer didn't get the call.

Regardless, Scherzer just didn't have it tonight. You can make a very good argument Jim Leyland left Scherzer on the mound at least 2 batters too long.

KEY PLAY

David Murphy's bases loaded, 2 RBI single in the 3rd, breaking a 2-2 tie, opening the floodgates.

Scherzer was on the ropes. Rick Porcello was warmed up, ready to enter the game. But Leyland decided to go for the lefty-lefty matchup. Instead of Procello, Daniel Schlereth was brought in to relieve. He had yet to throw a pitch in the ALCS (for good reason), yet was asked to all but save the Tigers season.  Schereth needed to do one thing, something he had trouble doing all year long, get a left handed batter out.

Schlereth immediately proceeded to fall behind in the count, and Murphy's at bat ended as we all expected.

Badly.

KEY THOUGHTS

Let the second guessing of Jim Leyland begin....after the jump.

Star-divide

Why keep Scherzer in the game as long as he did? Why use Schlereth over Porcello? Was the lefty-lefty matchup really preferable, when Schlereth hadn't been used all series long?  Why wait to put Porcello in the game? Regardless of how Porcello ultimately pitched (not very well, only getting 1 out, allowing 2 runs), isn't he a better option than the raw Schlereth?

When you have to call on Ryan Perry to settle things down and pitch long relief...well, that pretty much says it all.

Leyland is going to be roasted over the coals, deservedly.

Once again, the Tigers got to the Rangers' starter early, holding a 2-0 lead after 2 innings. Derek Holland allowed home runs to Miguel Cabrera,(the big man went down swinging, going deep in the 8th as well) Jhonny Peralta, and Jackson, and was unable to get out of the 5th. But, once again, the Rangers' bullpen held the Tigers' bats in check.

To top the evening off, there was a Brad Penny appearance, his first of the playoffs. After allowing 7 hits, 5 runs and ALCS MVP Nelson Cruz's 6th home run of the series, it will be his last time wearing the old English D.

Austin Jackson's post season was memorable...for all the wrong reasons. His defense has been brutal, making a pair of misplays (with an "assist" from Ryan Raburn) tonight. He did single and homer, but the K's also continued unabated. Jackson struck out 11 times in 25 at bats in this series, and finished with 19 K's in 41 post season at bats. Jackson's 3rd inning K was his 200th overall on the season. If anyone needs time off, it's one Austin Jackson.

OK, enough of the second guessing and venting.

Yes, the game and series ended in painful fashion. But let's keep things in perspective. The Rangers are a great team, absolutely loaded on offense. Back-to-back AL pennants back that up. There's no shame in losing to the Rangers. None whatsoever. And the Tigers played them damn tough, losing twice in extra innings. All with a roster decimated by injuries.

So we should celebrate the 2011 Detroit Tigers, not damn them with faint praise.

This was GREAT season for the Tigers. 2011 didn't end in the way we hoped, but finishing in MLB's final 4 is one Hell of a successful season. There are 26 other franchises who would love to be in the Tigers' shoes.

It's safe to say this team exceeded everyone's expectations. The 2011 Tigers gave us our most enjoyable regular season since 1987. Let's not forget they took out the Evil Empire in 5 memorable ALDS games. That alone will have me feeling warm and fuzzy all winter long.

It gets even better.

This is a team with 2 legitimate MVP candidates in Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera. Verlander is going to win the AL Cy Young unanimously. Doug Fister was the best pitcher in baseball after the trade deadline. Scherzer and Porcello have yet to reach their full potential, and we saw how good they can be earlier in the playoffs. The rotation is set for the next several years. Jose Valverde never blew a single save opportunity. Joaquin Benoit was tough as nails, a lights out set up man.

Iron Man Alex Avila had a break out, All Star season. Jhonny Peralta was one of the best shortstops in the majors.Victor Martinez was an offensive machine.  Brennan Boesch proved he belongs in the everyday lineup.Delmon Young did wonders for the Tigers' offense after being given up on by the Twins. Jackson played Gold Glove caliber defense, and was damn near a one man outfield at times.

And say what you will about Jim Leyland's game strategy, he one of the best at running a clubhouse and managing personalities. He's a great fit for this Tigers team.

If all that doesn't have you excited for the 2012 season, you're dead inside. Or still in shock from tonight's loss.

2011 was a great season for the Tigers. I fully expect 2012 to be more of the same.

He wanted to bring a championship to Detroit more than anyone. You gave me more than I could ever expected this year, Leyland. Be proud of it, because I’m proud of you, and my Tigers.

Still a Great Season

Yes we need a better bull pen. Yes we need a lead off hitter. Yes we need a 2nd baseman. Yes we need a 3rd baseman. Yes we need a left handed starter. However stop and think about the year Verlander had. Think about the year Cabrera had. Think about the impact of Fister and Young. Imagine this team with a healthy Boesch. In the end it wasn’t what we wanted but folks it wasn’t BAD!

They may need to be better at those positions

but please do not downplay the contributions Detroit got from Inge in the postseason. He really stepped up, and was one of the top hitters on the team in the last 11 games. Santiago gave what he could give, Don Kelly stepped up as well. For as much as it would be nice to have a great 3B, I will take a duplicate of what Inge brought to the table this postseason a year from now.

If we can get at least one decent infielder

I’d be fine with keeping Inge as a black hole/No. 9 in the luneup. Are there any 2Bs we could sign to be an everyday starter?

Thanks Tigers!

Great Season! I was thinking 84-85 wins at the beginning of the season. They took us all a lot further than that with a lot of great games…
Some of my favorite memories:
1) The game-ending double play throw by Jackson to beat Cleveland
2) The 9-8 comeback that killed of Chisox
3) Anytime Verlander pitched
4) Inge’s return to the majors HR

They did extremely well this season

we ended up with the best pitcher (Verlander) and the Best Hitter (Cabrera) in the American League. We won our first AL Central Title (and first Division Crown since ‘87). Justin Verlander through his 2nd No-Hitter, and had damn near many more, we had 5 All Stars (Verlander, Cabrera, Peralta, Avila, Valverde), and we saw the immergence of newer players (Boesch, Alboquerque) and pivotal 2nd half moves (Fister, Betemit, Young), had a 12-game winning streak in September, clinched the crown early, ended up winning our Division by 15 games (and by ~30 Games over Minnesota), and we beat the New York Yankees in the Playoffs. We have the Unanimous Triple Crown Cy Young (and possibly MVP) winning pitcher Justin Verlander, a possible MVP in Miguel Cabrera, protection for Cabrera in Victor Martinez, rising stars in Alex Avila and Brennan Boesch, and excellent output/production in Jhonny Peralta. We also may have seen the last of Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen, 2 of the biggest contributors to the change in fortune for the Tigers franchise, and for them, I wish them all of the best in the future and thank them for what they’ve done for Detroit. We also saw the regression of Brandon Inge and even seen him down in Toledo (who would’ve thought that at the begining of the season?!). But overall though, this team has a very bright future, and another offseason of Dave Dombrowski making moves should help the Tigers reach that goal of bringing back the World Series to the Detroit Tigers! I am not going to stand for roasting Leyland.

we had a hell of a season and their post season experience counts. Texas is a very good team and they showed why they are going to WS. Let us take this as motivation be back in the ALCS next year.

I agree and I was a Leyland hater earlier in the season

My Brother summed up best what happened these past five weeks…. At critical times almost every button Leyland pushed worked. Saturday night he ran out of buttons to push.

It was strange that a manager who used ALL of his position players in the post season had such little confidence in middle relief. When Max couldn’t go three innings the Tigers were toast. That’s not really Leyland’s fault. Middle relief HAS to be on the Tigers off season agenda. Along with a leadoff hitting second baseman, a back up catcher (gee I wish AJ was right handed), and perhaps some outfield depth.

Jim Leyland did a hell of a job and does not deserve being raked over the coals for Saturday night

by Jim Bunn on Oct 17, 2011 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you about middle relief.

The Cardinals were able to take one of their starters and make him a middle relief man during the playoffs, and it’s paid off handsomely for them.

I wonder how different the Tigers’ postseason would’ve been if Al Alburquerque had been at full strength.

Count me in as a Jim Leyland supporter. I questioned his keeping Inge around earlier in the season, but it worked out for the team. He’s going to catch heck for any mistakes he makes, but no manager’s perfect.

As a Rangers fan...

I want to tell you guys that you have a hell of a team. The series was a hell of a lot closer than 4-2 or 15-5 indicate.

It was the best playoff series the Rangers have ever been a part of (not a ton to choose from) and it was especially scary considering how the Tigers have kicked the crap of the Rangers so much in the last few years.

Hat tip to your fine team and no matter what… you ended the Yankees season.

FIRST, thank you for beating the Yankees… always a good thing.

SECOND, thank you for a great GREAT series… gosh, what DIDN’T we see…. a triple play… but we saw durn near everything else!

I watched Fister and said,“My God why did Seattle get rid of this guy?”
I watched Cabrera get walked intentionally with the bases empty, because the guy is THAT GOOD.
I watched that ball hit the bag and head for the sky and went,“Oh no… is that the ball jumping or my heart!”
Even up 3 games to 1, I bit my nails and drank too much coffee when we went down 2-0 in game 6 after two home runs… TWO.

Trade Dereck Holland for mr Fister? Yes, please?

Whew… what a GREAT series.
God Bless Jim Leyland!

Not Going To Second Guess Leyland

Actually the opposite, I felt like he did one of his best jobs ever.

The team had stupid bad luck towards the end with all sorts of injuries. We have the sticks to match with anyone, and we’ll learn from this.

Baseball is weird, the best team by far, the Phillies, couldn’t even get out of the first round, and lose one of the top 5 player in the majors on his last at bat, probably for a good chunk of 2012.

Illitch has already talked about adding two more bats. Your 2012 rotation is going to look like this: JV, Max, Fister, Porcello, Turner. You have one of the best hitting teams in the majors when healthy and you’re going to add likely a 2B and an outfielder. We’re going to be deadly from 2-8, maybe even 1-8 if Austin can straighten out.

In other words, chances are we own the Central for the next 3-5 years, and we can win it all in that time frame as well.

While tonight hurts, we have better days to come.

This is DBB, and this is what we do.

by V. on Oct 16, 2011 2:03 AM EDT reply actions

Very well said, Al. My sentiments, exactly.

Yes, it was a great season. We actually got enough offense to pull this one out, and could have had more if not for two rally killing double plays by Raburn. Once again, Holland was let off the hook with limited damage. The Tigers were done in tonight by a shaky Max, the usual horrific job by our middle relievers, and Leyland’s horriffic use of them, with a couple of terrible calls thrown in just to make sure it wasn’t our night.

And yes, Leyland should be criticized for some of his moves in this game. Dan Schlereth does not belong on a major league roster, let alone on the mound in the playoffs with the season on the line. It doesn’t matter that there was a lefty hitter at the plate. Leyland’s pavlovian response to bring in a lefty, ANY lefty from the bullpen backfired, because it is a flawed strategy. Fact of the matter is that Schlereth sucks. He’s not a good pitcher. The result was predictable.

Porcello essentially did the job, but for a bad call and some limited infield defense. He gave up ground balls, including one where Santiago GOT the runner on a fielder’s choice, but the runner was ruled safe on a bad call. Add that to the bad call on a check swing by Cruz that was not called a strike (with Max still pitching), and the Tigers were out of that inning with a 5- 2 score. Another grounder just out of the reach of Jhonny- one that many shortstops make easily, added another run to Rick’s stats. Then came middle relief, the rout was on, and the official end to the Tiger season.

It is fitting in a way, that if the Tigers were going to go down, it was their greatest weaknesses this season that sunk them. All season long, particularly before they acquired Fister, the non Verlander members of the rotation survived with good run support or amazing work by the back end of the bullpen. When you can get a win when delivering a lead to the back of the pen !00% of the time, a pitcher’s win totals will be padded. Max and Rick were beneficiaries of that all season long. But give the ball to the middle relievers, and kiss the game good bye. Bad Max showed up tonight, followed by bad middle relief, bad calls, and bad infield defense. That’s what the glaring problems are on this team, and they were on display as the season came crashing to an end.

Max has a fundamental flaw in his delivery. He has a three quarters arm slot, not over the top like most pitchers. If he keeps his fingers on top of the ball, his slider gets a nice downward rotation, the ball sinks, and it’s a deadly pitch. If he gets around the side of the ball, it breaks from inside out over the plate, and it’s a meatball. That’s what killed him tonight, more than anything. It sounds so simple, and in theory, it really is. But with his rather violent delivery and his three quarters arm slot, it’s hard to repeat the mechanics to command his pitches. Max has yet to show that he can be a legit top starter in the major leagues, and that is why. When he’s on, he can be dominant. He wasn’t on tonight.

Once the Tigers got into their middle relief corps, the game was over. Those guys are not capable of getting enough batters out in the major leagues. Sorry, but Rick Perry is a first round bust, IMO. He throws batting practice. When he’s not walking hitters, he’s throwing meat balls. Sorry to be so negative about tonight’s performances, but that’s what we got tonight, and it’s what we’ve gotten from our middle relief corps all season long.

I had to chuckle, sadly, at Leyland’s post game press comments, where he admitted that he put Penny in the game because he wanted to get him into the playoff action “to be honest with you”. Well, Jimmy, to be honest with you, that’s a problem. Forget the sentimental crap. Penny was the worst starting pitcher in the league this season, and he didn’t belong on the playoff roster. He gave up five runs tonight. What did you expect? Hopefully, he’s done as a Tiger.

That’s just my assessment of tonight’s game, and not of the Tiger team or their season overall. Leyland said that he has never been more proud of a Tiger team. Neither have I. They gave it their all, and they left it all out there on the field. Hobbled by injuries, they played on and they battled. They overcame serious holes in the rotation, in middle relief, and in the lineup. They have work to do in the off season, but this season is one to be celebrated. It’s almost better that they went down like this, rather than losing 3- 2 on a bad call at second base, or because the wrong pitcher was put in, or because of leaving runners on base. There was some of that during the series, but it was still a great season. One we can all be satisfied with and proud of.

Subtract Penny's five, plus those extra runs in the third, and we're tied!

Like Jimmy said, you’d look pretty foolish complaining about a couple of calls when you lose the game by ten runs, but I’m just saying that the Rangers were aided by some bad calls both by the umpires and by our skipper. In fairness, Leyland didn’t have much of a bullpen to work with- especially when you compare it to the likes of the stacked Rangers’ pen. Credit to him for getting us this far with that bullpen.

We are kind of like Turtles

We have a rock solid exterior that is difficult to penetrate, but we are rather defenseless once that hard shell is breached.

Our run differential and team ERA look rather meager because of that weakness. We’re still good enough to win 95 games during the regular season, but when we lose, we often lose ugly.

Terrific analysis

Glad you mentioned Peralta’s range.

Rod Allen was hyping him for a Gold Glove towards the end of the season and he DID catch everytyhing he reached, but he didn’t reach a lot of singles. I was pleased with the offense from shortstop this season, but Cleveland moved Jhonny to third for a reason, and it wasn’t JUST Astrubal Cabrera. Fact is that Perralta’s range is very limited and during the playoffs I saw diving attempts at what should have been almost routine for a shortstop. During the Yankees series old Derek Jeter made a couple of plays that were duplicated by Yankee hitters the next inning. They were HITS for the Yankees. Balls that were hit in almost exactly the same place went for singles. With Fister and Porcello pitching 2 games out of 5 there has to be good solid infield defense next season. I am not convinced that Jhonny is the answer. But I also am no sure we have a good option to take his place, as long as he keeps hitting. I suspect that Danny Worth will fill in a ton as a defensive replacement next season.

You also had an interesting slip of the keyboard typing “Rick Perry” as a first round bust? Did you mean “Ryan Porcello”? Ryan Perry is indeed a bust and I don’t see him in Detroit next year. Porcello could be gone too but that’s a different story.

I like Rick Porcello, who is still VERY young, and I hope he is here a very long time. But I don’t think he will be. I think he gets moved in a blockbuster DD trade. Perry is a first round but….at least in Detroit. I think he gets traded as well and might have success with a different team. Schlereth is only in the Majors because he is a lefthander. I wish they had talked Seattle into taking HIM instead of Chance Ruffin. I still think Seattle did OK on THEIR side of the trade with Ruffin being the “John Smoltz” in the trade. I would make that trade a hundred times over, but if anyone haunts the Tigers I think it will be Ruffin.

My prediction is that all three of the above mentioned Tigers could be gone next year. The Tiger have holes to fill and unlike last season free agency does offer options. Porcello is due for a raise and with Scherzer and Fister a year behind him he is the most likely to go, even though his age would normally be a factor. Put Porcello with a legitmate gold glove caliber infield and HE wins 20 games. I’m not sure if it will be in one big trade but I could see Dombrowski including him and either Perry or Schlereth or both in a deal for help.

Can’t wait to see your assesment on what the Boys need for 2012 Dog, and how they get there.

Wow lots of love

for Porcello. Too much in fact. I like Kid Rick but really 20 games a year. And I think everyone’s being a little critical of the Perry and Schlereth. Both of those guys are young too. If everyone’s giving Rick an alibi the same should be done for Perry and Schlereth.

by jeremy j on Oct 17, 2011 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Penny didn't belong on the playoff roster.

He’s going to be gone from Detroit now, though, right? And I trust Dombrowski to fill in some of the Tigers’ pitching holes.

Good analysis of the final game. All of the teams that make the MLB playoffs have good offenses. It’s pitching and defense that separate the good teams from the great ones.

Season over

We didn’t win the World Series like I predicted, but we still had a great season.

That Texas team is much better than what they were last year and when we played them during the regular season. The Rangers are just an amazing team right now. There is really nobody in that line-up you can pitch around and their pitching doesn’t have any weak links either. There starters keep them in every game and their bullpen is super deep. They don’t even have a mop-up guy.

So Congrats Texas. Good luck in the World Series, but I don’t think you’ll need it.

I hear his numbers over in Japan have been insane

Do you think he could make it over in America?

In a Tiger fan's world, the Tigers go 162-0 and the White Sox go 0-162.

The odds aren't good

Japanese imports seem to bust very frequently. I mean, other than Ichiro and Matsui…

Watching Darvish pitch feels different to me though for some reason.

I think his stuff will play really well over here. His combination of a mid 90s fastball with movement, pinpoint command, and that devastatingly unhittable slider looks very very promising.

i agree with the comments regarding the division

we have a window of opportunity to dominate the central for the next couple of years.

The Royals are coming up fast

They’ll need to add some starting pitching- big time, but their lineup is shaping up with some very good hitters.

Cleveland has shown us most of what they’ve got in the pipeline. Their future stars have been called up for the most part. Carlos Santana is a stud, Matt LaPorta is TBD but promising. I wonder if we could pawn off Schlereth for that option they have on Grady Spasm?

It can't be easy playing next to absolute butchers every game.

Maybe Jackson wouldn’t have been pressing if he knew he didn’t have to be responsible for covering 85% of the outfield.

No point in second guessing Leyland

Leyland is not the one that didn’t hit. We squandered so many chances, minus this game the starters were good, we all knew that our bullpen was only three deep and if you got past Coke, Benoit, and Valverde we were in trouble, over all this was a great season and a very entertaining post season.

Kelly Johnson

Anyone know anything about Johnson? He is a 2nd baseman with some pop in his bat.

by LarryLive on Oct 16, 2011 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

Seems like he's affordable, too

Career high 4.2 WAR in 2010, 127 OPS+. Looks like fielding has been erratic, though. UZR of 7.1 in 2010, but only 2.5 this year.

In a Tiger fan's world, the Tigers go 162-0 and the White Sox go 0-162.

I'd love Kelly Johnson in the D

Steady defense, offensive upside.

Thank You 2011 Detroit Tigers

They finished the regular season great, Central Champs. I really like the look of their team right now. A few improvements & 2012 will be even better.

I can’t wait to see who the bats are Mr. I was talking about. I have a couple in mind. One big one I said last spring would join the Tigers. We will see if he wins another Ring & decides to stick with his team or leave.

JIM LEYLAND

Jim, I hope you read this one day.
I want to thank you for being a class act. Your interviews were always honest, always sincere, sometimes funny, and you came across as an excited fan of baseball, just like anyone else who loves a good game and a good series.
You’re a FAN…. it’s not just Business for you… it’s a GAME… no one in NYC can say that. So refreshing!

God Bless Ron Washington, but he is nothing but platitudes, cliches and pat answers.
I’m glad the Rangers won, but Thank you and thank the Tigers for a series I’ll never forget.

GO RANGERS!

3rd inning

Brown quote: “The final score was 15-5. It wasn’t quite that close.” If JL hadn’t put in Penny as a nice gesture (7 hits, 5 runs, 2 walks?) it could have been 10 hits each and, with good calls in the inning, only 2 to 3 runs difference; i.e., Brown is off base.
