Will future Tiger fans regret the Fister / Pauley Trade
First let me say that I absolutely felt that the cost for Doug Fister was worth it.
Anytime you can get a guy that performed the way he did in August, September, and October by leading Detroit to their first Central Division Championship it was worth the cost.
But how will future Tiger fans view the trade?
Will Charlie Furbush, Casper Wells, Chance Ruffin and Francisco Martinez become names that fade quickly like Eulogio De La Cruz and Mike Rabelo?
Do any of the four have a Chance of becoming a star that is playing long after Doug Fister and David Pauley are gone from Detroit?
Will any develop in to the kind of Major Leaguer that has Hall of Fame statistics when their careers finally end?
We will not know for a number of years what will happen with the four pieces of the puzzle that Dombrowski sent to Seattle. But in looking at stats and press clippings Chance Ruffin and Francisco Martinez have a ton of potential. And Furbush and Wells are already playing regularly for the Mariners. But Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin had tons of potential too and we know how that worked out don't we?
There is no doubt that Dave Dombrowki gave up a bunch of percieved talent and potential to bring Fister and Pauley to Detroit. In my mind the past two weeks was worth whatever he gave up because without Doug Fister I think the Tigers miss the Playoffs.
However, future fans will not remember the past 6 or 7 weeks, just like many current fans do not remember what a blast the 1987 Eastern Division Championship was. It was the most crazy 4 or 5 weeks in September until 2009.
If just one of these kids that now play for Seattle turns into the real deal......well....I could almost write the blog entries that will follow every future trade deadline.
We've seen it before haven't we? And it was worth then just like it is worth it now! But the Tiger Fan of 2019 may not agree.
Somehow I got through that without breaking the JS rule!

I think that Martinez has the best chance to have a lasting career in MLB, but we can’t look at these players in isolation. Hopefully Castellanos will also have a long career at 3B. Having two strong prospects at 1 position means that 1 would eventually be traded. Might as well roll the dice this year since at the time it looked like we had a good chance to make the playoffs.
A good thing that Dombroski has been doing the past few years is drafting players with a higher potential skill level and then hyping them to the fullest extent. I know that this happens indirectly, but if the public and media talk about how excited they are about Martinez making it to the show, that increases his perceived value (to a small degree) and hopefully we can get more back in trade.
I have no regrets on this trade, although it will be fun to track how they do in Seattle.
No
Absolutely not. We gave away at best a major league starting 3B and a bunch of role players for a midrotation (or better) starter and a long relief pitcher who can serve as a starter in a pinch. And we have control of these players for the next four years or better.

Without Fister
This season ended up in the ALDS, at best.
Fans always want to make trades that are a steal for their team, but the nature of the beast is that you’ve got to give up quality to get quality, unless it’s a straight salary dump.

Average fan thought on trades:
WE WILL GIVE YOU AWFUL BENCH GUY FOR STAR BECAUSE WHILE HE IS NOT DOING WELL FOR US HE IS OBVIOUSLY BETTER THAN YOUR GOOD GUY AND YOU SHOULD TRADE HIM!!!!!1
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
I agree - I actually remember hearing on the radio last season
Let’s trade Raburn, Kelly and Inge for Cliff Lee.
Yeah Surrrrrrrre
The thing is we didnt give up much.
Fister is a great pitcher and what did we really give up??? Not much really.

Seriously?
The trade did what Detroit needed – a starting pitcher to help get the Tigers into the playoffs. If future Tigers fans don’t understand well, then they need to do their research.
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
and I have a feeling that this trade will be like a gift that keeps on giving- to the Tigers.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Fister is most likely a steady 3 but if he continues as he did in 2011...
…cost controlled #2. Hubba, hubba!
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
You're Right
And when we landed Fister he was supposed to be a solid #5,Turns out he is a absolute #3,possibly really good #2
Cory Smith
that's why BYB is here
we told folks all along Fister was at worst a solid 3.

Should I go pull back the post on that trade?

Way ahead of you
Taken together, what we see is a pitcher who might be loosely labeled as a No. 3 starter, who should be expected to get about the same results as Rick Porcello.
Right on the first part, not so much on the Porcello part.

Fister out performed everyone's expectations
Even Dave Dombrowski’s
Even BYB’s
Even his mother’s!

Too bad we weren't able to hear Stephen Grosberg's expectations

How true!
Fister would totally be one of Grosberg’s boys. Putting up good numbers, but not impressing the scouts with tools. If only Fister had managed put up about only 25 good IP total before the trade…his sample size would have been small enough to really impress Grosberg.

Grosberg would hate Fister
he’s over age 21.

Verlander/Fisher has potential to be better Morris/Petry
If you can snag a legit #2 guy, you do it. Good work by DD and thumbs up on the trade. We pay a lot to get Fisher but what do you expect? I wish we had Ruffin to solidify the pen. I am more sore for trading JJ for Renteria. I am not knocking Renteria.
JJ is always hurt
That trade isnt hurting us much all all if you ask me.

+1
I think the fact that we will have Fister for a long time is what’s important

JJ aveage 168 innings per year since he was traded
That 168 quality innings.
A fan's perspective is always tainted by recent performance
As I said at the beginning, I would make this trade 100 times over. But it is always fun to get the whole good trade / bad trade thing cookin!
I think JJ / Renteria will be one we look back at with regret a bit more. Only because Renteria bombed so badly with the Tigers.
it's been pointed out
that JJ probably would have went to the Marlins in the Cabrera/Willis trade if he was still with the Tigers organization.

Maybin / Miller
That deal’s not dead yet. Maybin quietly had a good year. OPS of .716 from a CF is decent. Add in 82R and 40SB and it was somewhat of a breakout year. The kid is still 24.
Miller…not so much, but the guy keeps getting chances. Maybe he’ll break through.
Regardless, the deal is looking a little less lopsided than it was a year ago. I’d still do that trade 1000 times over. Even if Maybin turns into an All-Star.

Maybin is
still never going to be nearly as valuable as Miggy. Ever.

never say never
Maybin could save a baby from a burning building – that would make him more valuable, just not in a baseball sense.
Probably true
Just saying that a year ago, this deal was an absolute killing. Today, at least there is one viable player on the other side.

You've got a good point
There also was a stretch where Andrew Miller looked like the BoSox’s most reliable pitcher. Didn’t last long, but good to see him have some success.
