Bless You Boys Podcast 21: Jim Leyland in a nutshell - Crusty exterior, soft as a Twinkie on the inside
The one day of downtime between series allowed us to recover just enough to put together an ALDS review/ALCS preview/TBS bitchfest, otherwise known as the Bless You Boys Podcast!
A skeleton crew recorded BYB Podcast 21, with a run time of 1:06. This week the podcast features managing editor Kurt Mensching and your host, deputy editor Al Beaton.
Topics discussed included:
- TBS is either awful or incompetent. Actually, they're both.
- What an emotionally draining series!
- There was too much love for Curtis Granderson.
- Did the Yankees' Joe Girardi panic? Was he out-managed by Jim Leyland?
- The Tigers' ALCS rotation.
- Are the Rangers a tougher matchup for the Tigers than the Yankees?
- There will be no changes in the Tigers' everyday lineup in the ALCS!
- Are you as tired of the "Beat down, underdog city of Detroit's spirit is raised by their sports teams" narrative as I am?
- Listener questions included rain delays, our ALDS MVP, Max Scherzer praise, stepping up in the next round, fearing Alexi Ogando, Al Alburquerque, lineup changes, the bullpen as a whole, we pick our NL favorite, and the return of the the lightning round!
And yes, we managed to squeeze in a mention or two of Brandon Inge. It's not a BYB Podcast without Binge.
Final thoughts: Kurt and Al shower the BYB community with praise!
We LOVE to hear from you. If you would like to have your question on next week's podcast, please email us at BYBPodcast at Gmail.com.

Great podcast, gents!
Thanks for getting my question in there! I just hope we don’t see Brad Penny in middle relief!
Thanks!
The less said about Bad Penny, the better.

If we did see Penny, it's likely in a game over situation anyway.
Leyland basically admitted that this was a sentimental, reward for being there all season move to put him on the roster. I guess those things resonate with players over time, and the Tigs are definitely developing a reputation as being a great organization that takes care of its’ players.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
You like us! You really like us!

Just A Quickie For Now
I don’t know that Fox will be any better than TNT. Off their record during the regular season I don’t have much hope that they will be.
As a diehard basketball fan I can tell you that TNT IMO is by far the best of the networks covering the NBA. It should only get better when they start playing again with Shaq added to the analyst group. ESPN and ESPN/ABC are absolutely brutal when it comes to their coverage of the NBA. A lot worse than TNT is when it comes to baseball.
Go Tigers
FOX definitely has issues with their coverage
I’m hoping McCarver not being in the booth revitalizes Joe Buck. Buck has been sleepwalking thru his NFL PBP as of late.
But TBS really disappointed with their baseball coverage. Who was really missed on the coverage, at least on the pre and post game show, was host Ernie Johnson, who had to beg off of the coverage due to a sick son. He’s a pro. Anyone who can go toe to toe with Charles Barkley can make stiffs like David Wells and Dennis Eckersley look better.
I’m with you on TNT’s NBA coverage. Their Inside the NBA post-game show is the best of it’s kind on TV.

Good coverage of the coverage
TBS was awful. My favorite Anderson moment was when he said some NY’ers used to perceive Cano as “laxadaisacal.” Nice. He should have axed Robbie a question about that. I thought Smoltzy was sort of the Detroit guy and Darling and Anderson were more openly pro-NY. Darling’s take on Verlander not pitching in Game 5 was especially annoying. Unfortunately, I don’t think we have much to look forward to with Fox. Joe Buck’s status in broadcasting boggles my mind. He is a dull, dull human being – why is he paid to speak on television during sporting events? Hopefully Tito will inject a little life into the broadcasts.
Thanks! I enjoy talking about the good and bad (and it's been mostly bad) of the media's baseball coverage
I’m not looking forward to Buck’s call of the game at all. Francona is a wild card, hopefully he’ll bring some energy to the booth.

"If you don't have a chip on your shoulders, then you're not a real Detroiter"
That reminds me of that Ford River Rouge Plant Tour commercial.
"We're not AL Central road kill for the AL East teams to run over"
Kurt is just full of great one liners.
Now Big Al hits a grandslam with that Leyland quote
It put a tear to my eye
