Magglio Ordonez out for the season
Reports on Twitter suggest Magglio Ordonez will be out for the rest of the season due to an ankle injury. (Per SabreRoseTiger, Venezuelan writers are calling it an ankle fracture, but this is not yet confirmed.)
Will update this story as necessary.
--
The Tigers do not have to decide who will replace Ordonez on the roster until tomorrow. However, Jon Paul Morosi credits a source as saying Toledo outfielder Clete Thomas appears to be the choice if the Tigers use a minor leaguer.
--
Ordonez confirmed in an e-mail to MLB.com's Jason Beck his ankle is broken. He felt pain before the game even began. It is the same ankle Ordonez injured in 2010 and had surgery on.
--
Speculation as to who gets the call to the playoff roster goes beyond Clete Thomas. MLive's James Schmehl speculates that Detroit could still choose to go with Delmon Young, who was inactive due to an oblique strain, or even Brennan Boesch, who had surgery on his thumb last month. Boesch told the Freep he hoped to be back by the World Series, though Tigers trainer Kevin Rand did not find that likely.

Gotta wonder if this signals Delmon's return
not trying to be cynical or anything, but an injury to a position player is the only way that Delmon can come back during the ALCS. Oblique injuries, any time I’ve heard of one, seem to take more like weeks or months to recover from, but if it’s not that serious, maybe DY makes a triumphant return to the Tigers. If Magglio is replaced during this series, he can’t come back for the World Series. He could be done in a Tiger uniform, which is sad.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
I just don't see it
I’d love to see DY to return, but ONLY if 100% healthy. I don’t want them to bring him back because they feel like they have to and then see him struggle due to still being hurt.

This is the tweet where the ankle fracture was reported (Lider is a Venezuelan newspaper)
http://twitter.com/#!/liderendeportes/status/123121330009812993
Basically it translates to “Magglio Ordoñez has confirmed to Manuel Lira [one of the writers] that he has fractured his right ankle and will miss the rest of the year.” I’ve followed Manuel Lira for a few months now and he’s been pretty reliable, but I am still trying to get one or more of the Tigers’ beat writers to confirm this.

Is guillen done for the year?
I like him, he can hit fifth and play some RF until the 5th or 6th i guess
In mid series, would have to be a position player

The outfield against a LHP would be Raburn, AJax, and.......?
If not Delmon….
Kelly doesn’t hit lefties at all.
Dirks? .323 .323 .548 .871 in just 31 AB.
Strieby?
Clete is atrocious, IMO, and against a LHP should not be even considered.
The Tigers have options when facing the one righty starter on the Rangers.
If Delmon can go at all, I’d expect that.

kelly
kelly has been playing great d in right, and just because texas starts a lefty..doesnt mean hes gonna pitch the whole game..i say play kelly, when a rhp out of the pen comes in…let dirks hit for raburn…abrera and vmart MUST step up now

I wondered about that move at the time
seemed a bit early for a defensive replacement, and a pinch runner on first base with two outs and the bases loaded?
If this is it for Magglio, what a great person and a great career with the Tigers. Among the greatest Tigers of all time, IMO.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
So *that's* why we saw Donnie a little earlier than normal.
Just think… he may have injured his ankle before the game, must’ve been in a hell of a lot of pain, and still went out there and tried to play on it.
A fractured ankle.
A possibly-career-ending injury.

I’m sorry, but i just don’t see that being a winning combination out there in the outfield. We’re SO close to having a shot at the WS, but I don’t think that trio will get us there

More from a few of the Venezuelan writers (again, this has not been confirmed by any of the Tigers beat writers)
First, Augusto Cardenas:
Fuentes: Magglio Ordóñez sintió molestias en el 1er turno, ayer. Después de la BB no se sintió bien. Desconoce cómo se produjo la fractura
Translation: “Sources: Magglio Ordoñez felt discomfort in his first at-bat yesterday. After the walk he did not feel good. It’s unknown how the fracture occurred.”
Second, Alfredo Villasmil (in a reply to the above tweet):
Magglio dijo que la fractura fue antes del juego, en las prácticas. “Me dolia, pensaba que era por la presión y la lluvia”.
Translation: Magglio said the fracture happened before the game, during practice. “It hurt, but I thought it was because of the pressure and the rain.”

Does Jim Leyland just go ahead and put Little Victor in the outfield at this point? I hear he hits switch, so that with his incredibly small strike zone could spell success against Texas’ pitching.

nothing to do about it
Injuries happen, and sometimes they derail playoffs for a team. Seen it in baseball, seen it in hockey… Unfortunately this year the Tigers are getting hammered by the injury bug.
All they can do is plug in someone who isn’t hurt and do the best they can. If they go down, they will go down fighting.
Still so proud of these guys. Played their asses off and did better than some ever imagined.

It's strange how you can get so attached to these players
I’m seriously bummed right now. Not because I’m worrying about who will replace Maggs, but that his career is most likely over. I’ll miss seeing him in the English D.
"I am a part of all that I have met." - Alfred Lord Tennyson via Ernie Harwell
Devestating loss
Unless DY or Guillen can come back, this makes the Tigers lineup so much weaker against LH pitchers. I found it incredibly frustrating that Darren Oliver could come in and pitch to Kelly and Avila, with nothing the Tigers could realistically do about it.
Thomas doesn’t help much since he’s another replacement-level bat to go with Dirks and Kelly.
Blerg. This doesn’t kill the Tiger’s chances but it puts a big dent in them. The pitchers really have to step up now.
With Avila and Peralta reverting to career norms, the Tigers are down to two plus-hitters and Raburn in the what now looks like an incredibly weak lineup. But maybe there’s a hero looming somewhere (Inge?, Santiago?, Jackson?).
Devastating? Not really.
We’re not replacing the Magglio of old. He was merely a shell of his former self. These days Maggs was mostly a singles hitter. He was no longer a good run producer, and his baserunning and defense had deteriorated. Whenever he started, which was mostly against Lefty Pitchers, he’d usually get replaced by the 6th or 7th inning anyway.
What I do like is that our defense will be upgraded tremendously in the outfield. Dirks can all cover a ton more ground than Magglio could. Dirks can hit vs Lefties, if given a chance. He actually had .321 batting average and .871 OPS vs Lefties.
Time for Dirks to shine and show us that he can be an everyday player.

but for some reason he seems to be in jim’s dog house
You have to earn Leyland's trust
That usually takes a while. I don’t think he dislikes Dirks, but I think he just trusts Kelly a lot more.

Sad end for Magglio -
- I was really hoping for one more dramatic home run. I guess it’s that video that TBS keeps showing with that long hair, that smile, and that unforgetable Tiger moment. I know it was highly unlikely but it really would have been a cool way for him to go out.
I wondered if the ball that A Jax dropped should have been Maggs’s to catch. If you re watch the way Magglio approached it seems goofy in that he kind of pulled up. short. Magglio and Austin have had that situation 50 times yet last night it was almost like Magglio couldn’t quite get there and Austin tried to make the play. I know he flat out dropped the ball but it was almost as if he went after it at the last moment. I wonder if the ankle was broken alread
Was that Yankee game really only three nites ago
It seems like a week since we sent them packing. What an awful couple of days for the Tigers.

quite unlikely I think. I think Schmehl was talking out of his butt on it based on Boesch’s hopes.

When was the last time Clete played?
Toledo’s season ended around 9/3. If Thomas gets the call, he’s probably more of a defensive replacement for Raburn in LF. I can’t see a month layoff on his mediocre AAA bat being good for his chances at the plate.
