Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Stohr, Hoffman, Crosby, Garcia, Perez added to Tigers' 40-man roster

The Tigers announced this afternoon the addition of five players to their 40-man roster, and the subtraction of one.

The subtraction was Cale Iorg, who was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo. That means Iorg has cleared waivers.

The additions were

  • RHP Matt Hoffman of Toledo
  • RHP Tyler Stohr of Erie
  • LHP Casey Crosby of Erie
  • OF Avisail Garcia of Advanced-A Lakeland
  • IF Hernan Perez of Low-A West Michigan

Pitchers Jay Voss, Cody Satterwhite, Robbie Weinhardt, Jared Gayhart, and Thad Weber, infielders Gustavo Nunez (again), Bryan Pounds and Brandon Douglas, and outfielder Justin Henry.

Voss, who came to the Tigers from Florida in the trade for Nate Robertson probably came the closest to making the roster of this group, and may still get an invite to Lakeland if he clears the Rule 5 draft in December. Nunez was left unprotected last year as well.

For Cale Iorg, this could be the beginning of the end. The highly touted, toolsy shortstop with the major league ready glove and no stick has been a big tease to the Tiger organization since the day he was drafted and was paid a seven figure signing bonus after two years away from baseball on a Mormon mission overseas. If any club was interested in him, they could have had him and just kept him on the 40 man roster. He won’t be taken in the Rule 5 draft, where he’d have to be kept on the 25 man roster for the full season.

I was surprised with Voss

Considering the success he had last season (and the hand with which he throws) he could be a pretty valuable member of Erie. Of course, you don’t keep guys on your 40-man just so they can win games at AA, but I think some of our Toledo boys are destined for different (perhaps greener) pastures in the next year. Voss could emerge as a fringe major leaguer pretty soon and I wouldn’t be surprised if some team wanted to trade for a lefty like him.

I guess the chances of him going in the rule 5 are still pretty low. He doesn’t profile as a back-end bullpen lefty or a LOOGY and I don’t think an organization would want to keep him all season as a SP at this point. He’ll probably make it through the draft, but I wouldn’t be astounded if a small market team in desperate need of of a serviceable left-hander took a chance on him.

any suprises?

Hernan Perez is a surprise to me. Totally off the radar

He’s a 20 year old shortstop who first played with the Tigers in the Venezuelan Summer League in 2008. Supposed to be a smooth defender, but his stats at the plate aren’t much. I can’t figure out why he’d be eligible for the Rule 5 draft, and if not, why they’d protect him on the roster.

Coffee break over.

Perez signing

I think you’ll find Perez signed on signing day in 2007, despite not seeing pro action until the following season.

So he was just 15 when he signed? Or 16?

I’ve gotten the hang of identifying the players that are drafted as they become eligible for the Rule 5 draft, but the international signees are very tricky. Anyway, I guess this action speaks highly of Perez, that they’d protect him over Iorg, Nunez, and some of the others. DD obviously has his ear to the phone and knows what players other clubs might be interested in picking up. That a club might keep this kid on a major league roster all season comes as a surprise.

The fact that guys like Clete, Strieby, and a couple others have escaped this round of cuts does not mean they can’t be cut later if and when the Tigers add a free agent or make a trade for a 2B, 3B, OF, SP, or whatever.

Perez?

Why would keep 20 year old that has played just A ballon the 40 man roster? I wonder if he will be used as trade bait?

perez

i guess he is supposed to be our best prospect at 2b correct? any of the guys unprotected that might get taken?

Perez started off this season great and made the Mid-West All-Star team

He just tailed off at the end.

About a month ago, I think it was Lynn Henning who predicted that Hernan Perez would be added to the 40 man roster so that he could be with the team in Spring Training.

I could see some N.L. team taking a shot on him

I can't.

Any dude who’s so bad that Daniel Schlereth is ahead of him on a roster can’t exactly have a lot of upside.

I find it interesting

That Strieby is still there. Wider what they’re thinking.

by TartanElk on Nov 18, 2011 11:44 PM EST via mobile reply actions

He's become somewhat of an "organizational player"

He helps keep Toledo competitive and nobody is really pushing him for his spot (if Hernan Perez is on the 40-man roster). Mike Hessman stuck for a long time and never really had a shot at the big club unless someone in front of him got injured.

Streiby could realistically get called up in (crosses fingers and knocks on wood) VMart or Cabrera got injured enough for a 15-day DL.
