Around SBN: NFL Owners Vote to Change Trade Deadline

Also mentioned by Heyman as showing "Some interest" in Jurrjens are his former team, the Tigers.

Jair Jurrjens has drawn some interest from the Orioles, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Rockies, Tigers, Rangers and others. However, while Jurrjens is a terrific young starter, he appears to be behind Oakland's Gio Gonzalez on the pecking order of most teams, possibly because of potential concerns about the knee injury that hampered him at the end of last year.

Jurrjens is undeniably talented (career 3.40 ERA), but has also been limited by injuries in 3 of the past 5 seasons. Durability issues were one reason why the Tigers dealt him in the first place as part of the ill-fated Edgar Renteria trade back in '07.

What are your thoughts on Jair Jurrjens and the Tigers rumored interest in reacquiring him?

I love Jair...

and if you can’t get Oswalt go for Jair is what I say.

Acquiring Jurrjenns would be like

Selling your buddy a car for $1000, and then a few years later he sells you the same car back for $2000 and it has been broken down for 1/2 the time he had it. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, even of you sold the car to him the first time way too cheap.

Unless Jair is filler for a trade involving Prado, I don’t like it at all. It doesn’t make any sense to willingly give the Braves so much interest on what would feel like a loan they gave us.

You've too long a memory in this case.

You can only compare a potential acquisition to the other options available at the current moment. Prior employment history is relevant only insofar as it predicts future production.

If I remember right

The braves were interested in a power hitting corner outfielder thats why they are interested in moving Prado. I believe they want Delmon.

by zackw27 on Dec 22, 2011 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

We don't really know

But my feeling is that the Tigers were willing to give them Delmon and the Braves weren’t too keen on him. They wanted to move some salary to go after a more pricey shortstop such as Rollins. They apparently offered JJ and Prado to KC, but they wanted the farm for the pair. The Braves are also known to want a young, cost controlled center fielder.

Problem with dealing AJax is that we can’t be sure that Cespedes is ready for show time. Playing CF would give him some flexibility in terms of expectations starting out.

Eh

They probably want Boesch, but we can hope it’s Delmon.

They want a right handed bat

The braves are already lefty-heavy

thats what i thought too

but i guess nothing can be certain

No Thanks

If he was our own the whole time and hadn’t been traded (which I was completely against at the time) then it would be great to have him…

I just don’t want to trade anything to bring him back, if he was a free agent and they signed him then sure, but not if we have to give anything up.

I see no reason to trade for another Righty, we need leftys

by WorldSeriesTiger on Dec 22, 2011 2:21 PM EST reply actions

I hate this line of reasoning

Righty/Lefty is a split for the bullpen. I care about how starters do against the aggregate of all hitters, not specific ones.

Good is good. Why is it supposedly better to have a mediocre pitcher on the staff because he’s left-handed?

by metatron5369 on Dec 22, 2011 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

FWIW, Lynn Henning doesn't believe the Tigers are interested

Via Twitter: Jon Heyman is rock-solid. But can’t fathom Tigers-Jurrjens. They didn’t like his size and durability. Now, the Braves have similar thoughts.

Totally

although if they can get a good starter for a reasonable price, I don’t think they’d hesitate to do it.

JJ won't be reasonable

I am even more sure of this after the Gonzalez trade.

THIS.

People are incredibly high on Jair and I’m terribly confused as to WHY exactly.

He’s a slightly worse, Latin version of Rick Porcello.

by The Birchman on Dec 22, 2011 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

If by Latin version of Rick Porcello

you mean a good pitcher that has gotten good results for more than just his rookie year, then I don’t know where you got the Porcello comparison.

If you mean, rushed, overhyped, and not very effective overall, but would make a really good #4/5 pitcher then yes he is the spitting image of Porcello. Except that Jurrjens doesn’t really fit that description either.

Jurrjens has been very lucky with the defense behind him and he isn’t nearly as good as his ERA says he is, but he is a much better pitcher than Porcello at this point in time. Porcello “should” wind up better than Jurrjens, if and when he ever puts it all together. Jurrjens has put it together and he has probably reached his ceiling (which is a 2/3 pitcher), if not exceeded his projected ceiling. If he can stay healthy he would be an improvement over Porcello this year.

Meh

If it happens, it happens. I’d rather have Oswalt though.

That would be a big bat in their lineup.

Bc Delmon cannot field..cannot get on base.. He is adapt @ GIDP & hitting up the buffet line though..that however does not help win baseball games

by Wolverine119 on Dec 22, 2011 4:31 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

But he's still here

No matter how many buffet lines he hits. Saying “Delmon sucks lol” does nothing to change the fact that he will be in a Tigers uniform next season.

Delmon is fine. Not exceptional, but fine. The trend toward bashing him all day is undeserved and useless.

I happen to agree. After all, he will be only 27 next year, and has lots of good hitting in him.

and I can't figure out why the A's are in such a hurry to trade him.

they must be getting a tremendous package back in return.

I'm wondering the same thing.

The only other consideration is injury/performance risk. They may not want to chance it for half a season for what might be a marginal increase in selling price.

by BayesLaw on Dec 22, 2011 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

I guess if they can pull off a Dan Haren type of deal, why not?

But Gio is exactly the type of player that they should be building around.

The A’s are all about San Jose and they’re in limbo until they work out a price for the Giants.

Indians have also inquired on Nick Swisher

that’s a player that I’d love to have in the Tiger lineup, big time. Adios Delmon!

Gio and Bailey
The Red Sox are trying to get Gonzalez and Bailey in a “monster deal,” tweets Rosenthal. The Rays are also in on Bailey and the Nationals are the team to beat on Gonzalez, Rosenthal reports.

And now I have officially turned Big Al’s Jurrjens post into rumor central, for lack of somewhere else to post this stuff.

by Tigerdog1 on Dec 22, 2011 3:48 PM EST reply actions

No

Trading Jurjens for Renteria was probably the worst move DD has made in Detroit but bringing him back now is not the way to make up for it. Between the injuries and the likely high price tag it’s not worth it. If we can’t get Oswalt and do end up trading for pitching there are better (or at least healthier) pitchers than Jurjens.
