Who should be the Tigers #5 starter?
One area that the Tigers could fix for 2012 is the rotation. The market for starters is thin but there are a few options. One is Mark Buehrle. He is looking for a three year deal worth about $14MM per year. That's pretty expensive, especially with Turner right around the corner. If you sign Buehrle, then trading Turner for a big offensive player is probably a good option. But I'm not sure that I want that to happen. Buehrle is not an ace anymore, but he will guarantee you 200 solid innings every year and is left handed. Something Detroit could use.
Another option is Hiroki Kuroda. He will be 37 by opening day and will not give you the same 200 inning guarantee that Buehrle will, but he is not an injury prone player. He has better numbers than Buehrle and will only cost about $12MM on a one year deal. That works out great because it will give Turner a good year of seasoning in AAA. He is right handed but if your not as worried about the lefty/righty matchup as some people, that won't be a problem.
There are some other other options on the market that might cost an arm and/or a leg such as Gio Gonzalez or Jair Jurrjens. Or you could just bring in Jacob Turner, but there is a risk that you will have rushed him and that could be costly in the long run.
Personally, I'd go with Kuroda, but who would you choose?

Kuroda would be great, if not, Bedard
Bedard gives you quality innings and a lefty Tigers need. He should be good until he hits the DL. Then we can bring up Turner. Bedard play for 1M last year. So he should be cheap. I would also be happy getting Kuroda for a year or two.
Kuroda won't sign here
It’s either LA or Japan for him.

it will be "other"
a cheap, experienced veteran NOT named Brad Penny. keep that spot warm for JT. then just wait and see how the season unfolds. Turner could very well play a huge part in our rotation after the All-Star break or down the stretch.

I'd be OK with Kuroda on a one year deal
While Bedard sounds nice because he’s a lefty, he’ll probably get hurt. I’m perfectly fine with stashing Turner in Toledo for all of 2012, other than a spot start or two.
Personally I'd like to take a flyer on a high upside injury play
Like an Erik Bedard or a Bartolo Colon or a Rich Harden (well, maybe not Harden). We’ve got Smyly, Turner and Oliver in the high minors, so if one of those dominates (as well one should- hopefully), the problem will solve itself as soon as something goes pop.

agreed....
I would love to land the long time south side lefty but not at the price/years he will command! The next best option would be the injury prone flyer. If they produce and stay healthy its a plus….if not we have turner/smyly/crosby/below waiting for their shot.

I love this idea
In fact, I suggested it a few days ago and included a few other names…Webb and Sheets should also be considered.
Another nice thing about this type of signing is that it would allow the boys in the minors time to show who is throwing the best. I hope it’s Oliver, Smyly, or Crosby so we can get a lefty in there and give Turner just a little more time in the minors. However, if Turner is the best of the bunch when Bedard’s arm explodes, he gets the call.

No Webb
He hasn’t been able to get healthy when not doing anything the past few seasons. It’d just be a waste of money.
Yeah, he's my least favorite of the bunch
I’ll trust the scouts on this one. If he shows that he can pitch, he’s worth a shot.

I'd love to have Buehrle,
I’d give him a 4 year / $60 Million contract without even thinking about it. That would bump Porcello into the 5th starter spot. You could pencil us in for 100 wins right now. Valverde would get 60+ save situations. We wouldn’t have to worry about adding another middle reliever. Adding him would knock out 2 birds with one stone.
Jacob Turner?
When would he get a chance to pitch? When he’s 25….?
maybe not
I think if we sign Buehrle than we trade Turner. I can’t believe I’m saying this but It may be the way to go, depending on what we could get for him. Don’t get me wrong, I like Turner but he is still very young and has a lot to prove. He may not be ready until he is 25? You don’t know with prospects. Look at Kid Rick……he is still learning. Back to Buerhle, I would like him for 3 years but don’t think that would get it done. That would give us options and depth! However I’m sure this will not happen and we sign or trade for another Brad Penny type just to hold down the fort until the younsters are ready.

He'll get his chance soon one way or another
We could move him or somebody else to the pen. Go with a 6 man rotation. Somebody could get hurt. Or we could trade somebody.
Other teams have had young pitchers work out of the pen (Ogando, Feliz, Price) then move them up to the rotation when there’s an opening. Even Johan Santana started off in the pen.
We could even groom somebody to be a closer when Valverde leaves. Zumaya was a starter when he was in the minors and we tried to groom him. Too bad that plan failed.
You go with your best 25 players
Just remember that.
Then what do you do with Buehrle
Have him make $15MM for the next three years after 2012 to sit in the bullpen. If you’re looking for someone to pitch one year, go with Kuroda.
Buehrle would be our #2 starter
I wouldn’t even think of putting one of the best work horses in the game in the pen.
Sorry again about my wise crack in your other thread
I apologized for it before I wrote it, but apparently I hit a nerve, and that’s not what I meant by it. It was half jokingly. It might not of been the worst thread ever, but trading Turner and Castellonos is a combustible topic. With both guys, we should at least wait until their trade value is at it’s peak. Not now.
No problem, homie
I was just trying to start a conversation. I in no way, shape, or form endorse trading JC or NC without it being for a monumental player. Such as those I listed. If we plan on starting Turner in the rotation this year, we might as well trade him because he will flop. I do not want to see him on the opening day roster. I want him to struggle in AAA and then pull out of it in AAA. That’s the only way he’ll learn how to pitch in the majors. If you don’t learn how to fail and redeem yourself in the minors, you’ll fail in the majors. Porcello is a good example of that. Same with Chris Davis of Texas from an offensive standpoint. I think he’s with Baltimore now. Castellanos looks like a pure stud, Longoria future, type player. He’ll be a star for years.
You evaluate Porcello and Scherzer throughout the season.
Your only option is to trade one of those two. Likely, you sell Porcello on the promise of his potential. It might not be ideal, but that’d be your likely scenario.
I would actually more Max before Rick
Max has higher value right now since he has flashed his potential much more often than Rick has.
That is if I was going to trade one of them, I don’t think I would though.
1. Buehrle 2. Kuroda 3. Oswalt
4. Bedard 5. Other 6. Below, Wilk, Crosby, Marte or other internal option not named Turner
7. Not Turner

Tiger make or lose money last year
I think the Tigesr lost the most money in 2010 in the MLB, in the range of 30 million and lost almost that much in 2009. They must have at least broke even in 2011? How is the season ticket sell going? Save their pennies sign Bedard and bring the best AAA pitcher after the All-star game.
I'd love Buehrle
but… he’s got half the league pining for his attention.
i’d seriously doubt he’d be in a Tigers uni next year.
that being said, that would be fricken awesome!
as for when/where to put Turner, well, one can never have too much starting pitching depth. it’s a good problem to have, especially with other up-and-comers like Smyly, Oliver, etc.
