Tigers rumors: Dotel, Ramirez, Polanco, Buehrle (updated)

Day 1 of the Winter Meetings, and we don't really know anything new about the Tigers. But we do have a couple of updates/confirmations of stories we've already heard.

Sunday night, Fox Sports' Jon Paul Morosi reported there are no serious talks between the Tigers and third baseman Aramis Ramirez. Today, MLB.com's Jason Beck followed that up with a confirmation.

Beck also updates us that Octavio Dotel has confirmed the Tigers' earlier interest in him.

Update 12:45:

Ken Rosenthal (on Twitter) mentioned the Phillies are trying to move former Tiger Placido Polanco.

Update 3:45

Earlier this afternoon Jon Paul Morosi reported the Tigers and Mark Buehrle will probably not happen. (Twitter)

polanco

I wouldn’t mind as a last resort and before the great platoons in place….of course giving up minimal talent in return.

That iso is ridiculous last year…& the Inge thing was a joke…however..if we strike out on prado, headley, callaspo etc..or the price tag in terms of prospects is to high..philly would pick up some of that salary…& polanco @ 3rd sounds better than Inge / kelly to me

Polanco, 6.5M due in 2012, buyout due in 2013.

He could be a decent option for a year at either 2B or 3B. I’d want him back at 2B so we can put Raburn back in the OF mix and put Santigo in the rest of the IF mix.

Correct me if I'm wrong

But if the Tigers did acquire Polanco, wouldn’t that be the end of Inge in Detroit?

by TartanElk on Dec 5, 2011 2:37 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Breaking News:

Insider sources confirm: If a trade for a 3B does happen Tigers lock up Brandon Inge in the basement of Comerica Park and throw out the key into the Detroit River.

by vr67 on Dec 5, 2011 2:42 PM EST reply actions

Why is everyone....

…assuming they will keep Raburn? I can’t be the only one who is tired of the the 1/2 a season wonder? They should release Inge, and why oh why have they asked their fans to endure another year of Lardo Gerald Laird?! Should, heaven forbid!, Avila have to go on the DL at some point, then that guy would be in the line up everyday! Agh!

by BengalsNme on Dec 5, 2011 2:56 PM EST reply actions

Laird's defense means we could probably survive by letting him start for a short stretch

But let’s be honest. If Avila goes down, we’re boned.

Agreed. Most teams are boned when a stud goes down, regardless of position.

by Brand New Hero on Dec 5, 2011 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't know we were supposed to have All Star backups at each position.

Name a team that has a GOOD backup catcher.

The Yankees. That’s it. And Jesus Montero will probably be a DH for them at some point if his defense doesn’t develop.

Laird is a great backup catcher, this has already been discussed. And if something happens to Avila, the Tigers will look elsewhere for help at that position, I’d guess.

There's a chance he'd be able to come back if his knees get better and Avila goes down, right?

Trade rumors is saying tigers have interest in daniel Murphy and mets have interest in dirks, I can see lots of tears on this site if we trade dirks I know byb loves it some 4th outfielders… Anyone know anything about Murphy?

by syper17 on Dec 5, 2011 3:26 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

Placido Polanco?

Do not want.

I just hate his offensive game so much. He’d be a pretty big upgrade defensively, sure, but I don’t know if it’d be worth it. With an aging player — and this could be completely unfounded, so correct me if I’m wrong — it might not take much for the range to fall.

If that happens, which obviously shouldn’t be considered likely I don’t think, then he holds very little value, if any at all.

by The Birchman on Dec 5, 2011 3:27 PM EST reply actions

Another one.....

From MLBTR:

The Tigers, Blue Jays, and Padres inquired on Mets infielder Daniel Murphy, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Sherman adds that the Mets like the Tigers’ Andy Dirks as a potential center field alternative to Angel Pagan.

Murphy, 26, hit .320/.362/.448 in 423 plate appearances while playing first base, second base, and third base this year.

Murphy played more OF than anything until 2011, and more first base than second or third in 2011, but his defensive numbers at 3B aren’t bad for a small sample.

It'll cost us Dirks and pitching, probably

Not a Smyly/Oliver level arm, but a guy like Bruce Rondon might get it done.

from MLBTR earlier today
The agent for soon-to-be free agent center fielder Yoenis Cespedes is telling teams he’ll require twice what fellow Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman received, tweets ESPNBoston’s Gordon Edes. That is, $60MM.

Don’t think it will get that high…. but that’s quite the asking price. I don’t think we’ll be willing to pony up that much to sign him, nor would I want us to.

It's like Jimmy Rollins saying he wants a five year deal

or Reyes talking about “Carl Crawford money”
They all ask for the moon and stars at first

On the flip side, we’ve got DD and Leyland giving us this BS about how they’d be happy with these inadequate platoons at 2B and 3B, and how one of these AAAA pitchers is going to be in the rotation. They’re low balling us, like they do every year and the media is perfectly willing to play along with them.

"King of Minutiae"

by Tigerdog1 on Dec 5, 2011 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

all I'm saying is if he's starting at double Chapman

and comes down from that… say to slightly more or even the same amount Chapman got. That’s still quite a bit of money to commit to an unknown talent.

No longer the Founder, President and CEO of the Ryan Raburn Fan Club

by tigers22 on Dec 5, 2011 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

But it's still only money

That would be the only investment. No giving up players, draft picks, etc. Just money. Taking the chance on Cespedes panning out is well worth the risk that he doesn’t.

Platoon at 2B is and potentially in LFare cheap, Tigers lost close 30 million in 2009 and 2010

Remember Mr.I is worth 1.5 billion in asset not in cash. He not going to sell part of Little C to help the Tigers. Tigers are one of the most in debted teams in the MLB. Tigers have someday soon stand on their own two feet. One thing in our favour is that Mr.I companies it is privately own and not a public traded company. Therefore, Mr I can do what he wants with his profits.

by Barry2 on Dec 5, 2011 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

Having a higher number of pizza franchises when he goes off to the great dugout in the sky isn't Mikey's objective now

A chunk of the debt that the Tigers have is stadium debt and that is coming down every year. They need butts in seats, more than anything. If you build a winner…. people will come.

"King of Minutiae"

by Tigerdog1 on Dec 5, 2011 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

You don't even have to build a winner

2008 proved that. You just need to build expectations. And it won’t take much to do that this offseason, just a couple of moderately significant signings/trades will build off the anticipation from last years run.
