Daniel Murphy, Mets draw Tigers' interest
Daniel Murphy for Andy Dirks? It's possible, sources say. (You would assume it would take more than Dirks, otherwise you might begin to wonder if the Mets are actually run by New York's version of MLive.)
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports (on Twitter) the Tigers have inquired about Murphy, a 26-year-old infielder who can play first, second and third base. (Eyeing up his defensive metrics, second might not be the best place for him, but he played the position.)
Sherman says:
Mets like Tigers Andy Dirks as potential CF alternative to Pagan.
Murphy batted .320 with a .362 OBP and .448 slugging average in 2011. He is batting .292 / .343 / .441 for a career across three seasons.
He tore his MCL in 2010 and again in 2011.

Interesting
very, very interesting. I wonder if Lucas Duda is available? I’d much prefer him
Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual
sounds like a brazilian soccer name: Duda

Kurt
I follow soccer like crazy and I’ve always said the same about Duda, in fact there’s was even a famous goalkeeper named Dida. Highly appreciate the soccer reference during the offseason…

Is this for real? Look at his birthdate.
I wish you could have found a different picture of the guy outside of him reacting to a strikeout. That, and two MCL tears don’t give me the utmost confidence.
I honestly don’t remember ever even hearing about this guy, but I don’t follow a lot of Met baseball. Anybody offer any other insight?

That's sort of irresponsible tweet if he's just rephrasing Sherman...
…I was getting excited. He made it sound like he had new info. Judging from the fact no other writers have mentioned the trade since Sherman, I’m guessing there’s nothing new to report.
He’s just the sort of guy I was realistically hoping to get: young, cheap, offensive upside, respectable defensively.
I asked him about it
he called it an unreliable source at the winter meetings and in a follow-up tweet said he worded it too strongly

I hope his source turns out to be good. I think that would be a solid
pick up for say Dirks and an arm like Ortega.
I'd like this trade
He could take Guillen’s spot on the roster. Next we’d need to find a replacement for Zumaya.

That why we need Dirks because he can play cf too
Just in case something happens to AJax or he does not get hitting again. DD has to save what little trade bait he has for something real good. So no to the trade.
Meh
Use Clete Thomas for that. Seriously, this kid can play second or third and can get on base. What’s the problem?

I'd be able to live with that.

Kelly in CF, who platoon with Inge
Your going let Inge play 3B every game?
Uh, Murphy?
You know, the infielder they’d be trading Dirks for.

I can accept him at 2B but not 3B
Mets move out of 3B in the lower minors. I think he made 35 errors at A Ball. They is nothing but a showcase by the Mets.
It wasn't on the same knee
His right knee required surgery, where he missed the entire 2010 season. His left knee didn’t require surgery, and he is currently rehabbing it, and should be ready by Spring Training.
In 2010, he initially mildly sprained his right knee during a Spring Training game in a rundown play between 3rd base and home plate. Then during his rehab stint in the minor leagues, he had a high-grade tear of the MCL while turning a double play.
He hurt his left knee while covering 2B during a stolen base attempt, where the running slide into him and took him out.
Here’s a link to a video of that play on MLB.com :
Ouch!!!
Very bad, reckless slide, but still, Murphy needs to learn to protect himself better or he will continue to get hurt a lot. Maybe a good reason to look at him as primarily a third baseman.
Looking at the offensive numbers, Murphy looks like a solid hitter and OBP guy. More power and fewer strikeouts per AB than Izturis, for instance, but not a lot of speed on the basepaths (especially if his knees are a little gimpy). If healthy maybe even a bit better than Prado. But those knees…!
I would still like to see them pick up a leadoff hitter who can get on base and run, either an infielder or an everyday outfielder (not a platoon guy, obviously).

Clete Thomas?
Have you not seen the deterioration of Clete over the last few years? He can’t hit sand if he can’t find sand in the desert let alone the baseball in the zone, not to mention all this while in the minors, don’t confuse a half a season of mediocrity in the Majors to translate well…ever

I wouldn't let the possiblity of injury to a young player who has never had a significant injury problem...
prevent us from trading a 4th/5th outfielder type to shore up what is the weakest spot in our lineup. I do, however, agree with you that Clete is awful.

Maybe it's just me
but the two MCL tears scare me. Maybe they were freak accidents (does anyone know?) and he isn’t injury prone. I’m an Andy Dirks fan. I know he hasn’t done a ton in the big leagues yet, but I just enjoy his style of play. Very sound defense, smart on the base paths, and smart at the plate. I think that he can fit into the no. 2 spot with contact hitting and even a little power.
With that said, I know that Murphy can do the same thing with the power and the high batting average and OBP and this trade would benefit Detroit because of Murphy’s ability to play several infield positions. I would just hate to see the trade be pulled off and the Tigers end up with a player with knees on the verge on exploding at any given moment.
Mine own mind is mine own church.

They were somewhat freak injuries.
He got his right knee hurt while turning a double play. Got the left knee hurt while tagging out a runner during a SB attempt. So a baserunner took him out both times.
