Report: Octavio Dotel narrows it down to Tigers, NL team
For our excitement today, we have this bit of information from Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal:
Source: #Tigers front-runner for Dotel. NL club also involved. #MLB
Dotel had a 3.50 ERA (3.34 xFIP) in 2011, pitching 54 innings.
The 38-year-old right-hander has a 3.74 ERA for his career with a 3.69 xFIP. He also moves around more than Edwin Jackson, as he's been with six teams in the past three seasons.
Bill James Online (via Fangraphs) projects a 3.50 ERA in 2012 with 10.95 strikeouts per nine innings.
Dotel would shore up the middle relief for the Tigers, so there is that. But I'm not a big fan of overpaying for middle relievers, either. So we'll have to see how this goes.

I'm okay with Dotel
to take over 7th inning duties
No longer the Founder, President and CEO of the Ryan Raburn Fan Club
My guess is 4M or so
Worth it for that kind of money. Minimum salary is almost 500K, so he’s really only getting an extra 3.5M. Reliable in the 7th, puts AlAl and Coke in more flexible roles. Also makes it less likely that Perry will fail in situations where it infuriates us as much and makes David Pauley even less visible (if that’s possible).

I hope Dotel pick us.
We need 7th inning guy. I do have faith in AA and Coke but more depth the better.
Actually Wheeler is my pick
He somehow gets the job done, but dotel is cool in my book.

Who knew?
Justin can now let the fungus grow back on his shower shoes.
I'm cool with this.
Two reasons…
one) it gives us much needed bullpen help (7th of Dotel, 8th with Benoit, and 9th with Valverde is a nice 1-2-3 7-8-9) and
two) A MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A:AJKEIGHADSNKCsdlf;jkgh!!!!!!!
needless to say, i’m thrilled.

Apparently they've made an "aggressive" move.
FML…. it’s probably multiple years.
I would be mildly surprised that DD signs a reliever this soon
Maybe it’s just an itch to get something done- something that we all feel right about now. But the market for relievers is stacked. There are more pitchers than there are jobs at the back end of the bullpen. Some pricey closers aren’t going to get pricey jobs. Guys like Madson and K Rod might be better off accepting arbitration and giving it a go next year, because there aren’t expensive closer jobs to be had. Boston, the Reds, and the Angels are the obvious ones, and none of them is likely to give out more than $ 10 mil plus per year for a closer, IMO. The market for relievers just drops from there on down. Guys like Francisco, Rauch, etc have taken some of the jobs.
Dotel on a one year deal is fine, IMO. I kinda like Coke in an earlier inning role, taking the ball directly from the starter on a rough day- probably a righty starter with a lineup stacked with lefty hitters, and going a couple innings to the set up guy. Between Al Al, Dotel, Perry, we should be in better shape than last year.

Man I swear this guy must own dombrowskis’ ear… We have spent a ton of resources on our bulpen lately.. 1st round pick @ 27 mil for valverde..2nd round pick & 15 mil for Benoit…Sizemore for that shitty left handed whos name I cannot remember…whomever for Pauley… Ian Kennedy for Schlerith…the great reliever draft..perry..satterwhie..weinheart..jacobson….for the record I barf violently @ the amount of resources we’ve put into the pen over the last couple of years…btw..the mets just got Torres & ramirez{wholl make a combined 5 mil nxt year)) for a non tender canadate in angle pagan… Would like to have seen us go after those two guys..the cost would have been minimal interms of players & money….

to step in here
Wolverine is right that there was a rumor reported in the New York media the Diamondbacks offered Scherzer for Jackson straight up in November of that year and the Tigers didn’t take it.

We never really had Kennedy and getting Pauley got us...
Fister and Valverde and Benoit were to of the biggest parts of our team last year, so don’t complain.

Torres?
I wanted Ramirez and Pagan was okay but Torres? No.

2.2
Torres was worth 2.2 war in 120 games last year..DY’s 10th place MVP year was 1.8..if we do sign cespedes & trade young..torres would have been great insurance@2.5 mil…i aint hatin on dotel..but im sure hell command 7 mil on a 2 yr. Deal..thats a luxery..& we have more pressin needs than a 6_7th inning reliever

Maybe,
But I bet Angle Pagan would improve our team’s overall geometry grade. I say he would be acute left-fielder. Not to be obtuse, I just really think I’m right.

With all the deals relievers have been getting
4 mil a year is pretty low. I’m guessing at least 5 mil, probably closer to 6.5 mil (sigh)

Waste of money
I’d much rather take the Rays’ approach to bullpen construction. One non-tendered guy I’d consider inviting to camp is Jesse Carlson. Guys of his nature, low-risk, high-reward types. Even Zumaya qualifies under that theory.

TB actaully spends a bigger % of their budget on the bullpen than we do
These are approximates, not exacts:
In 2010, TB spent $17.3 Million on their bullpen, which was 24% of their total payroll.
In 2011, TB spent $ 7.2 Million on their bullpen, which was 17% of their total payroll.
In 2010, Detroit spent $13.5M on their bullpen, which was 10% of their total payroll.
In 2011, Detroit spent $16.8M on their bullpen, which was 16% of their total payroll.
Apparently closing in on deal
Hope its good!!!

This has "2-year deal" written all over it
Which I guess is okay as long as the money is reasonable. I don’t think we’re talking about Benoit or Potato money, so this signing (if it happens) shouldn’t limit future signings by DD… like a Cuban right fielder, for instance.
"All aboard! There is plenty of room."
Brennan Boesch Bandwagon Conductor
Don't get your hopes up
The Cuban will want to play in the big city lights of New York, New York. Until he signs with the Tigers I will not believe it
The Cuban...
would probably choose Miami, dollars being equal. Otherwise, NYNY would probably have a certain appeal to any kid from a small city in Cuba.

Aroldis Chapman didn't choose NY or Miami
He chose Cincinnati of all places.
Marlins and utter insanity!
The Miami Marlins have now spent the entire national budget of many third world countries on 3 guys and 2 more third world budgets will be spent on Pujols and Fielder! Our fair land is in debt over its eyeballs. What is wrong with this picture?
I was about to post something along those lines.
Somebody in Miami wants to buy a title. Nice new uniforms, anyway.

The deal would be fine for the Tigers, even at two years
but it’s never going to be my favorite thing in the world
A Dotel signing would give the Tigers four platoons
3B Inge/Kelly
2B Santiago/Raburn
6th inning relief Perry/Schlereth
7th inning relief Coke/Dotel
This is no way to “Leyland proof” a roster.
Justin can now let the fungus grow back on his shower shoes.
UPDATE: 11:15 CST
Beck reports that the Tigers and Dotel are close to finalizing a deal.
One year, with a vesting option for 2013. No word on the value per year.

2013 Vesting Option
Not a bad idea. Potato will most likely walk after this season and Dotel gives us a late-inning option headed into 2013 if we use him this season according to vesting terms (probably IP).
