Updated: Tigers Close to Signing Octavio Dotel
Update: Danny Knobler reports the first year is for $3 million. Sounds like a good deal to me.
Update: Jon Heyman confirmed Rosenthal's report today (via Twitter)
octavio dotel is in agreement on deal for 1 yr and option with #tigers
(second tweet)
dotel deal with #tigers gives them very strong pen. adds to benoit, valverde, etc.
Source: Only question remaining with Dotel and
#Tigers is term. One year with vesting option most likely outcome.#MLB
MLB.com's Jason Beck confirms that the Tigers are putting the finishing touches on a contract with Dotel.
DALLAS -- The Tigers found the man they wanted to shore up the middle of their bullpen, and Octavio Dotel found another new home. They found a match, and the two sides spent Wednesday evening putting together a one-year contract.
The deal was not finalized as of late Wednesday evening, but a baseball source characterized it as close. It's expected to include an option for the 2013 season, a compromise between the multiyear contract Dotel was seeking and the one-year deal the Tigers preferred.
This is the latest information available as of 2 a.m. EST.
In case you're wondering, the Tigers do still have one roster spot open to make a selection in Thursday's Rule 5 draft, should they choose to do so.

Effective against righties but might need some help against lefties
That okay because we have Coke, Schlereth or Wilk to handle them.
Great move.
3 mil and an option for ’13, perfect. Middle relief was one of our few problem areas. This should take some of the stress off of Perry/Schlereth/etc.
I like it.

Solid signing.
A little pricey, but most one year deals are. He will do just fine in the back end of the bullpen.

There is so much wrong with that...
ahem…
I know, it is about 2Mil cheaper than I thought he would go for.
Better.
Pirates took Gustavo Nunez in the Rule 5
why yes, I'm slightly drunk at the moment

Not much worse than us keeping Santiago most years
Nunez’s glove probably plays a little better than Santiago and he’s got more speed. He’s a UT IF, not a starter. And this is Pittsburg we’re talking about.

good deal
1 year, 3 million and he makes our BP a whole lot better. What would everyone like to see us go after next? I think we all know the needs (leadoff hitter, 2b/3b, 5th starter). Maybe waiting to see what happens with Cespedes?

Cheap, and he’s a reliable arm.

Nice BP depth deal
Nothing wrong with making the team better.
Yep, we're better now than we were Sunday
The meetings are an exciting time for fans like us that follow the team closely during the off-season. We hope for good news and exciting trades/signings. A year like this one can be viewed as a disappointment or anti-climactic, but I think we’re clearly a better team right now, than we were when we finished 2 games from the world series. We’ve lost no major contributors. We’ve added a significant bullpen piece and addressed our catching needs. We’re leaner financially, yet we still have room (perhaps significant) to spend. We’re in good shape. I’d like to see a #5 SP signed soon, but we’re ok.

At this point, it looks like
the 5th starter role is there to be had for whichever prospect is most ready. My money is on Oliver, but I am sure Turner and Crosby, at least, will get a good look.
Probably not going to pick up a starter through the Rule 5 draft.
I still keep hoping to hear of a trade for a leadoff hitter.
Won't be Oliver
He still has control issues. It’ll be Below or Smyly.

Smyly passes Turner?
Is Crosby an outside chance?

Could be any of those five--Turner, Crosby, Smyly, Oliver or Below
A lot can happen between now and the end of spring training. Injuries can sideline somebody, somebody can get traded, someone can show significant development. My guess is that Below probably makes the roster, possibly as a starter but more likely as the early relief guy (he was not horrible in either role last year). I would not be surprised if one or two of those guys were traded as part of a package—probably not Turner, at this point, unless the Gio thing or something similar is still alive, which it does not seem to be. I would love to see one of the young guys catch fire and make the roster as a starter. That way the rotation would theoretically be set for several years.

Smyly doesn't pass Turner
But the org thinks Turner needs more time to develop.

There is still plenty of time in the off season
To sign a fifth starter. It isn’t going to be a big name, and it never should have been. It will be someone in a similar situation as Penny is was last year, if they catch lightning in a bottle…cool, if not then no big deal. It gives the young guns a bit more time to develop (and after last year it looks like they might need it) but if one of them really starts to blow away the AAA hitters they aren’t hurting financially by benching or moving the 5th starter to the pen and going with the young guy.
There was absolutely zero reason to sign a top flight starter to a multi-year deal this off season (trading some of our pitching depth for one is a different story).
Agreed
The pitching market is just starting to develop…it always goes from the top down (and bottom up) where the dollar figures can dictate the rest of the market.
Wilson and Buehrle signings set the market rate. Oswalt, Kuroda, and Edwin Jackson will be the next flurry, probably coming before the holidays. Then, January will roll around with the likes of Maholm, Francis, and Marquis waiting for jobs. You’ll probably see the Tigers get somebody in January. I’d rather it were Harden, Sheets, or Chris Young if they are deemed “healthy”, but it might end up being someone from the list above.

Tigers got a nice deal on Dotel when you look at the other relievers signed
this off season. I’ll take him for 3 million over any other contract handed out to relieves so far. Holy crap, I still can’t believe the potentially 63 million dollar contract Philly gave Papelbon.
