Who is the best "blocked" third baseman?
One of the best ways to get talent for a decent price is to land a player who is blocked by a star. The Tigers desperately need a third baseman no matter how many "good" pounds Inge has put on or how hard he is willing to work. Who out there has good potential but will never get a chance because they are blocked?
My favorite is Matt Dominguez of the Miami Marlins. He had injury problems in 2011 but is still considered the Marlins' top prospect. However, with Hanley Ramirez being moved to third, he is seriously blocked. The Marlins would want plenty for him but DD has a good relationship with the organization and might be able to cobble together a deal.
Who else is a "blocked" 3B the Tigers might be able to nab?

I'd really like Dominguez
Flip em Smyly for him… he looks like a potential Brandon Inge 2.0. That might sound crappy, but solid defense and power at third looks good for next year.

Kid can’t hit… I admit his glove is excellent but no thanks.

Stick with Brando if used properly
He is not an everyday player anymore but if he plays 80 games a year and play some D in the late innings I fine with it. With all the arb coming up the next couple of year we need get our 6 million investment back to some degree. You never know maybe the Fish might want to trade HR. Now that a ball player if healthy and is focus.
Maybe not "blocked", but the Angels seem to have a surplus at the hot corner.
They ran Maicer Izturis, Alberto Callaspo, and Russell Branyan out there last year. They finally gave up on Brandon Wood and sent him to the Pitts. They’re now talking about moving Trumbo to third as well as giving him some DH duty after he made a run at Rookie of the Year. Now, Trumbo is doubly blocked by Pujols and Kendrys Morales (you can’t get no more blocked than THAT).
Either Izturis or Callaspo, or both, could give the Tigers a serious upgrade in the infield, at both second and third. Unless of course they’re determined to wallow in mediocrity with those platoons.

Yeah, but are the Angels willing to give those guys up for young players?

Relievers, primarily
Heaven forbid DD would part with Dan Schlereth or Ryan Perry!
Now, the Angels have Kendrys Morales to trade for some relief help, but they want major league ready relievers. Halos would like a Dotel/ Benoit type to set up Walden. They may wait out the market and see what closers fall through to them at a bargain.

I'd give them both for either

not sure
I know you can’t trade guys who are just drafted for a set limit of months, but I have no idea if there are any restrictions on sign/trade deals ala the NBA

Toronto had Mike Napoli
for 10 minutes or so. They should have looked him over better.

Phil Coke is a major league reliever
who may stir up enough interest to unblock an Angel infielder or 2. I know Coke is valuable to us, but a decent infielder who can bat 1st or 2nd effectively is more needed at this time. Sometimes you have to give value to get value.

It'll be interesting to see which Angel ends up being available
Keep hearing that “Trumbo can play third”, so I got curious. Turns out, Trumbo has played 0(that’s zero)games at third base his entire professional career. Not once in MLB, not once in his years in the minors. I’m not sure anyone will be turning thrid base over to him.
For the Tigers, that probably means any third base possibility obtained from the Angels will be the least of their options close to the end of spring trainging as they sort the position out.

The "Trumbo can play 3rd" comment is coming from the Angels themselves
Doesn’t matter if he actually can, but dammit, they’re going to say so.
No doubt LAA
is going to move someone – either Trumbo or Morales.. I’m sure they’d like to keep Trumbo, but he has more trade value. I wonder what it’d take to get him. More than 1 top 5er?

They will probably dump Morales
on some team like Seattle that seems to like their castoffs (Figgins). They can get a decent reliever there no doubt. Sounds like Trumbo would play third a la Raburn.

Matt Carpenter.
Someone else brought this name up a while ago. He’s blocked by Freese in Stl. Has consistently put up ridiculous OBP in minors and generally good offensive numbers across the board. No idea about defense. 26 yrs old, late round draft pick, and very little MLB experience…should be easy to acquire.
With Allen Craig having surgery, they need some OF depth. Delmon, Dirks, etc. would get this deal done I’d think.
Carpenter does have nice MiLB numbers
And despite just turning 26, he’s only been a professional for 3 years. Not like he’s been in the minors forever.
That MiLB .408 career OBP is worth Dirks I would guess.

Very interesting suggestion...
This is the kind of guy that I was hoping would come out of this thread. Get a guy like Carpenter and play him with Inge (he bats left handed). If he takes off, we get a steal. If not, he can be replaced by Kelly. Nice idea BayesLaw.
Happens every once in a while. But like I said, somebody else
dug this guy up, not me. I’m just a fan of his profile.
B- from Sickels
If the scouts hate him, we might be able to steal him. I doubt we’d acquire him though, especially if the scouts hate him.

FWIW
I really like Mike Olt in the Rangers farm system and Beltre is signed through 2015, with a 2016 option.

not sure just how "blocked" he is ....
but Kyle Seager of the Seattle Mariners might be worth looking at. I seriously doubt the cost would be too prohibitive, and he could bridge the timespan until Castellanos is ready ….
We'd trade you guys Youk if y'all can swing a three way deal for a good starter.

Would Youk be happy on the same team as a middle-schooler that once kicked his ass?
I mean, Porcello’s in high school by now, I think, but I believe he was in 6th grade at the time.
