What's the first thing you looked at in the Tigers preview mag?
Great post idea, and one I'm curious about as well. --Kurt
Talking about the Maple Street Press Tigers 2011 Preview that Kurt edited, and that Alli and David and Matt and others around here had roles in putting together. Mine came in the mail on Saturday, and I've been slowly perusing that gem, enjoying a couple articles a day, and resisting the urge to devour it all at once. Although, I suppose that once that was done, I could just go back and read 'em all again.
The question here, though, is one born from curiosity, and based entirely on my own actions when receiving the preview. I spent a moment admiring the cover shot, then turned to the table of contents, like a kid in the proverbial candy deciding what to sample first, and ended up going with Ian's article on Sparky Anderson, followed by Tom Gage's Ernie Harwell reminiscence.
I found it telling, even as I was holding a preview of the season to come, that my first instinct was to pay respect to the Tigers of the past, those men who held such sway over my childhood.
And so, I'm curious as to what articles those of you who purchased this preview first went to, upon opening up the magazine?

I'm glad you said that
All Maple Street Press magazines have a history section, but I felt like it would be an incomplete book without Ernie Harwell being honored. When Sparky passed away, I had to do some re-arranging of stuff but I knew he simply had to be included and Ian would be a great one to write it. So I’m glad to see it pay off.
Great topic.
Well I haven't gotten it yet
but the first thing I’ll read would probably be WIll Rhymes’ story. I’m interested to see how he writes!
There is no offseason.
My icon was drawn by Samara Pearlstein, talented artist/blogger at Roar of the Tigers.

Needy writer
I’d be lying if I said I read anything but my two pieces first, but after I was finished I moved on to the piece about Jacob Turner’s mechanics.
Right there with Matt
I admit it, I read the two pieces I wrote before I read anything else. Then I read Matt Snyder’s Rick Porcello piece.
Got it yesterday
I quickly flipped around but will start from the beginning reading an article or so a day. Gotta make it last!

history
Like others, I read my two articles first. After that, I read the entire history section. I don’t see a lot of history in baseball blogs (maybe I should do something about that), so I’m glad the Annual has that section.
I'll definitely look out for that if you do
Love to read about Tigers history, from the Buffalo Bills like three straight WS losses in 07-09, to Hank Greenberg’s travails, etc.
Picked up a book a few years ago by a pitcher named Eldon Auker, a submariner from the 30s and 40s who spent time with the Tigers, and was part of a championship in 1935. The book was a general memoir, but it included some stuff about the Tigers of that era, as well, a bonus I hadn’t expected when I grabbed the book.
Can the Red Wings make it 5 in 15 years? Here's hoping!
I must be the only writer who can't stand to look at his stuff in print
That may be from working for years with an editor who would really mess up my writing before it hit the newspaper.
Anyway the first piece I read was Lee’s Rudy York piece, because it arrived in my email box first ;)
As the editor, I couldn’t choose just one. I’m proud of so many of the writers.
Looking forward to getting to that piece
I was at Tiger Stadium the night Sammy Sosa hit his 19th bomb of June 1998 to break Rudy York’s long standing record of 18 in a month. Kind of an obscure record, but hey, it’s my little piece of history. And we beat a pre-injury phenom named Kerry Wood and the Cubbies that night, too.

Yeah, I read mine first
But next I went to Matt’s stuff and the piece on Jacob Turner’s mechanics. And the article on Kid Rick by Matt Snyder.

Free Scott Sizemore!
I went right to the back page of course
but after that, I read the player profiles. because those were the only parts I hadn’t read til my eyes were bleeding ;)
Still waiting for mine to arrive
but I haven’t seen mention of a single topic that I’m not keenly interested in reading.
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
Read my Cabrera article. Didn't read my Andrew Oliver piece, yet.
But, I had read both of them before the magazine was printed. I had also gotten a sneak look at Lee’s article on Rudy York which I freakin’ loved.
Aside from those, I really enjoyed Matt’s piece on Rick Porcello. After that, i thumbed through the player profiles because I had those same ideas (but really just for Boesch) that were presented: the strikezone broken up into boxes and production broken down by various ways.
Just got mine
Had to read the Turner article first, fantastic stuff. I’ll get around to the rest after exams slow down a bit.
