What will happen to Phil Coke?
It is an all around assumption that if one of the 5 starters go down, Oliver or Turner will fill in. At this point in their careers, they will most likely be there to stay, with the other pushing hard to take another spot. This is what confuses me about the choice to re-convert Coke to a starter. If all goes as planned, both Turner and Oliver will be in the rotation next season (2012) and Crosby, if healthy, should be causing a very good problem. This means that there is 1 spot for 3 extremely worthy pitchers (assuming Penny doesn't come back). Odds are, this will be Coke's only season as a starter, and he could either be put back into the bullpen (my choice) or traded (bad choice). This is because, logically, a rotation of Verlander, Scherzer, Turner, Oliver, Porcello is a lot better than one of Verlander, Scherzer, Turner, Porcello, Coke. There is obviously a trade coming in the future, because they still have Crosby. Should he have a good season, i could see Porcello on the trading block. There is no room for Coke after this season, and something is bound to happen in the future, but what?

We'd be fortunate to be in this position
I’m guessing that we probably won’t be lucky enough to have all 6 of those guys work out.

Yeah
Somebody will go down to an injury, somebody won’t work out, we’ll lose one or more to free agency…
There is never such a thing as too much depth.

I was just about
to say the same thing
Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual
I'd be ok with him getting a spot start or two next year
but there’s no reason for him to see the CoPa at any point this season.

Absolutely
I see no reason to rush him. A spot start or two to get a feel for big league pitching, but I hope he spends all of 2012 in the minors. We can’t afford to screw up his development

I wouldn't be as sure about that
All of this year, yes. Most of next? Doubt it.

I'm more hopeful than sure
There’s no reason to promote him if the guys ahead are playing well, right? Right?!
Players to replace Kelly with Adam Wilk up before Oliver or Turner.
Kelly vs. Dirks, Worth, or Strieby. Only 1 reserve IF is needed, so I vote for Dirks. Sp far the Tigers have the pitching, but lack hitting. Wilk could be #7 reliever with Zumaya DL. I’m NOT laughing.

I am
This conversation had nothing to do with any of the guys mentioned besides Oliver and Turner. I don’t even understand why or how Don Kelly, Andy Dirks, Danny Worth or Ryan Streiby even came up. A 2nd bench infielder is absolutely needed, and while I would be happy if it was someone better than Don Kelly, he plays a much more important role than Adam Wilk would as another mop-up guy.
You can carry 7 relievers.
Assuming Zumaya, on the Dl, I vote for Valverde, Benoit, Perry, Weinhardt, Schlereth, Wilk, and a pick from Brad Thomas/Ni/VillarrealFurbush/L. J. Gagnier depending on who shows up in Spring Training oe Toledo. Other possibiliyies include Oliver, Thad Weber, and others depending on their performance. SO FAR Adam Wilk is performing like he doesn’t need to prove it at Toledo. Sizemore is showing why they might consider carrying him with Rhymes the extra utility guy with Santiago. I promise to be more PATIENT because I know the Tigers will bring up the right player in a DL because they did it PERFECTLY FINALLY last year. It’s a long season and it’s great to have depth everywhere. The recognition of this is being recognized at a much faster rate than even I expected. Dirks, Wilk, and hopefully Schleretth are perfect examples. Congrats to DD on all this plus Benoit so far.

2 Rookies in next years starting rotation?
I’m sorry, but if next year we are looking at counting on two rookies in the starting rotation we have issues. Say Oliver spends a large portion of this year as a call up, I say we would still have issues with both him and Turner in the 2012 starting rotation. That is just thinking about age and maturity.

Other names to consider.
Wilk(obviously), Furbush, Villarreal, Thad Weber, L. J. Gagnier, and Drew Smyly/Cole Nelson next year. The first 5 could relieve too.
by StephenGrosberg on Mar 11, 2011 2:00 PM EST reply actions
Wilk(obviously)
Seriously, what is your deal with this guy? Did you two go to school together? Is he a family friend? I’m not trying to poke (too much) fun, but it gets a bit ridiculous when your every post is pimping this guy for a big league spot. Just let us know, I’m sure a lot of people will get off your back if you give us a reason.

First of all, 100% agreed (or Striebied, whichever),
secondly, rec., and third, thank you.
I was for the Alexander trade when it happened, and I'd do 'er again!

Just look at the stats for Wilk in his 2009, 2010 career.
Consider the Branch Rickey method which is Innings minus hits and K minus BB. The bigger the #, the better the pitcher. My source is minorleaguebaseball.com stats 2009, 2010. Look at Strieby when he was healthy. I also look ar ERA. I put much more confidence in stats than scouting reports. Look at the stats for Brandon Douglas in the Minors and what his college coach said. Congrats to the Tigers on both years of promotion for Wilk, but they were a little slow for Erie because of only a top of 87. The Spring Training invitation was greatly appreciated. I bet Mike Rojas had something to do with that. I[[COMMENT_CHILDREN_TOKEN]]#8217;m sorry for getting off the subject, but 1 decision affects another. No DL for Zumaya makes it harder for Wilk. No DL for Carlos eliminates either Rhymes or Sizemore. Kelly eliminates Strieby or Dirks.

To BenRoth22
Why not consider Adam Wilk along with Oliver and Turner? Also Brayan Villarreal and Furbush should be in the mix depending on Toledo. Then we can get to Thad Weber and L. J. Gagnier. We can get to Cole Nelson in 2012 if they get him to Erie ithis year.. Then there’s Drew Smyly and Alex Burgos depending on where they land. The only way to make decisions is to see the stats, promote them depending, and follow the stats again.

Wow
Every post is about Adam Wilk… It’s kinda starting to ruin every thread you touch.
Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual
The last thing I want to do is ruin your Posts.
That’s it for me on comments at least for Wilk. I’ll let Tiger performance take its place. If a comment can ruin a Post, I wonder what the world is coming to.

We don't have a freakin clue what way the rotation will go
There is nothing more certain with pitching than uncertainty. You just have to build depth, preferably by stockpiling talented young arms, a number of which can be optioned down and called up as needed to start. We could see any of the current five plus any of Oliver, Crosby, or Turner, and we could indeed see Adam Wilk getting a spot start, depending upon the circumstances. If there is a full time opening available in the Detroit rotation, there is little doubt that the first opportunity will be given to Andy Oliver, regardless of who pitches well in spring training. The best chance for a guy like Wilk, or Furbush, or Villarreal, is a move to the bullpen- and the sooner the better for them. Wilk is a gritty pitcher with good command, but he’s not Andy Oliver or Jacob Turner in anyone’s dreams. He’d be on my short list for consideration for the Tiger bullpen, but on a longer list for a spot in the rotation.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
With the starters in stone until a DL, I agree completely with Wilk, Villarreal, and Furbush in relief.
I go for the guy who throws strikes and has command. Because relief involves minimum work, you better throw strikes and have command. The more they pitch in ST, the easier will be the decision. That’s why the Tigers are waiting. So far, in my book, DD has set up excellent options by playing the best often enough.
