Porcello stellar and Strieby homers but Tigers fall to Orioles
Rick Porcello allowed just one hit in three innings on the mound and Ryan Strieby homered in the ninth inning, but the Tigers couldn't maintain an early lead and fell 6-2 to the visiting Orioles. Porcello struck out one.
Jose Valverde had a clean fourth inning on the mound, but Charles Furbush struggled a bit in the sixth. After giving up a hit and a walk, he allowed a two-out home run to Nolan Reimold. Al Alburquerque gave up a home run to Michigan native Jake Fox in the eighth inning as well. Fu-Te Ni struck out one and allowed no hits in an inning and a third in relief.
The Tigers managed to work five hits and four walks off the Orioles pitchers. Andy Dirks doubled and scored in the first inning for the Tigers' only other highlight at the plate. He crossed the plate when the Orioles misplayed a Brennan Boesch infield pop fly into a single.

Great sign
that Rick’s off to a strong start. Granted, it’s still very early and for a small sample size, but it’s a good sign
Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual
Remember his spring in 2010.
If I remember correctly, it was filthy. I thought he’d win at least 30 or 40 games.

Ni has been stellar this spring.
Very encouraging. Need another LOOGy, preferably with big league experience. Plus, I always liked Ni, and his impressions. :)

One by one, the long relief candidates are struggling
Brad Thomas, Ni, Furbush, Bale, Wilk, Weinhardt, Oxspring, Gonzalez, Olivaros, Ortega, Alburquerque, Wise
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
I don't think Weinhardt is an actual long relief candidate
I think he’s more of the Zumaya insurance policy

Weinhardt will be a star if they're patient.
I’ve read the slider AND sinker are working. Zero in on #6 AND #7. Zumaya may not be durable. I may even change my mind about Ni, but I still prefer Wilk AND Villarreal. Not enough evidence yet, but so far so good. How about Strieby! No one has confirmed that Clete Thomas has shortened his swing. There will still be holes if he hasn’t.

Weinhardt probably ceilings as a setup man.
I’m not sure there are many setup men that I consider “star”…but Chapman and a few others have potential. Weinhardt, and I like him too, is not Chapman.

True, nor is Ni, but they're candidates for that last bullpen spot.
Which means they might shove Brad Thomas into the long relief role, which would be a mistake, IMO. Thomas should never face a right handed hitter with anything less than a ten run lead.

Tigers, note who's doing it and who's failing.
Wilk and Weinhardt are successful so far, but are getting minimum work. For a reason I can’t understand, teams are not willing to mark the good ones for maximum work, but continue to work the fillers like Alburquerque. They also should forget the old ones to get better evidence from the young ones.

Patience, Grasshopper
There haven’t been many games yet, so I wouldn’t read too much into how many appearances anyone has. That being said, Weinhardt has 3 appearances, which ties for the team lead.
I’m guessing that Wilk is still considered a starter by the organization (which I believe is a good thing for both Wilk and the organization). Hence, they’re probably keeping him on a 5th day schedule and I foresee him throwing two or three innings behind the first starter in his next spring game.

Hold on a second....
Brennan Boesch hit an infield pop fly? MIDSEASON FORM, BITCHES!

Forget Zumaya.
They havent said anything about him in a couple days. I am willing to bet that his injury is a lot more serious than they are letting on. Especially the way Leyland kept saying there was absolutley no red flags. Big red flag right there.
uhm..

You mean Bushfur?

It's just as dirty that way.
