Brad Thomas finally pitches in a Tigers victory
While watching the game two nights ago, in which Brad Thomas came in to pitch (after an hour and change rain delay), I found myself saying, "Thomas only comes in when we’re going to lose". I thought that was unfair to think, until I watched him pitch (50/50 on throwing strikes and balls keeps me on the edge of my seat), and started to wonder a few things:
· What kind of record do the Tigers have this season in games the Aussie pitches?
· What is the Tigers record overall in his games?
· What are this season’s stats like?
· What do Brad’s overall career/ Tigers career numbers look like?
· 1-11 The lone Tigers win coming that night (5/10/11).
We had lost all 11 games that Brad Thomas pitched in this season!!!
· 19-42 Last season the Tigers were 18-31 in his games
Odd when these numbers seem really good, comparing them to this season

nice article Daringer
You have confirmed what my gut has been telling me. Brad Thomas is taking up a roster spot that could be used better (either to develop a prospect or to help us win now).
18-31. My goodness, that makes we weep.

The W-L is maybe not so helpful here.
Brad Thomas is a long man; it’s not surprising that he would get called into a lot of games where the starter blows up in the third. I mean, I agree that dude kinda sucks, but long men are going to appear in a lot of losing games.
I don't want to hear any weak sh*t from Jason Grilli.

True, but...
…every once and a while, you would hope that your long man gives you a chance to claw your way back in. Brad just brings his shovel from the ’pen and keeps digging.
The other sports are just sports. Baseball is a love. ~Bryant Gumbel, 1981
The problem with moving furbush....
1)he is and should be a starter….and should be a good one
2)say you do move him up to the pen…he’ll throw less and not get some valueable pitching time that he is getting by keeping him regular on the mound in the minors
3)he’s young—pressure situations that relievers are put in wouldn’t be the best way to break him into the bigs, IMO
If the bullpen needs fixed, which i feel it does(if BT is on your 25 man roster, there is definitely a problem), the obvious answer to me is to slide Phil Coke back to the pen and bring up oliver or furbush…I do like Coke as a starter but with the trio of incredible lefties we have in the minors, there may not be a spot for him when these kids come up and I would hate to see him leave because there isn’t a spot in the rotation. Phil coke might be a good starter—-but he is/was an AWESOME reliever. At what point does his value mean most?? As an decent starter or a shutdown reliever? Well after the Cleveland series I can tell you it’s reliever in my book, especially since there are kids in the minors who would be just as adequate of a starter as coke is…

All valid points
I feel like you make some good points here, and Charlie will definitely one day be a good starter. However, I truly believe the less innings issue won’t be an issue, with Brad Penny and Phil Coke as starters. Penny will most definitely get injured by seasons end, and if not will still need to see some days off down the stretch in order to stay healthy. Coke has not pitched more than 64 innings (which was last year) in the majors, so there is zero question in my mind as to whether or not he’ll need to be skipped in the rotation a time or two when the season drags on. Between those two, and heaven forbid one of the other three get injured, Furbush seems like he could log 80-100 innings to me, a pretty nice chunk. As far as the “pressure situations” that you speak of, I feel the record of the Tigers in Brad Thomas’ games shows that we don’t tend to use the long relief guy in ANY sort of close situations. My hope would be that with Chuck available in the pen, maybe we could. Also, I can’t image the pressure he’d feel being any greater than that of Verlander or Zumaya pitching in the World Series as rookies, and (besides injuries to Zoom) they both seem to have turned out pretty darn good. But you still do all very good points. Thanks for the comment :)
I also agree w/ your Coke should be a GREAT reliever again, instead of a mediocre starter assessment. I think that will all come up next season though.
Hopefully not that long...
if I have to sit through another series like the one in Cleveland again I may have a stroke
Fully Agree
I fully agree that Coke needs to go back to the bullpen, take the place of Thomas who should be DFA, and then they need to bring up Furbush to start in his place. I really like Furbush over Oliver, although I would gladly watch either one over Coke. How may Tigers fans groan when they realize that Coke will be the starting pitcher when you think about turning on the game. Then you spend the next hour just waiting for him to implode.
While we are at it – let’s go ahead and discuss Magglio Ordonez as well here. He is the Brad Thomas of our Offense. He is standing in the way of Andy Dirks – who has hit for power, is strong defensively in the outfield and as speed on the basepaths. Hell, it is bad when Casper Wells has even out-performed Maggs so far this year. We are reaching that point in the season where a decision needs to be made. I love all of the excuses for Maggs – that he is still injured and that is the reason he has not performed. If this is the case, put him on the DL, send him down to AAA when he is “healthy” and then let him “rehab” for as long as possible, until he proves he belongs. It is pure insanity to continue to put a .172 hitter, with 4 XBHs, and a .232 SLG in the #3 hole – after playing in 26/40 games.

MORE than fully agree
I had exactly the same train of thought the last couple of times Thomas came in… Coke back to left-hander out of the BP and get one of the young starters up here. They can’t do much worse than Coke as a starter. It would have been great to have Coke face Kubel on Wednesday…

I dint think come will be that bad of a starter....
but there is no question where he is best…dude is a force coming out of pen.
But I think moving him would be out of necessity, not out of inability. It just doesn’t make a whole lot lot if sense having this kids just mow through the minors. Get them up to the club and see if they stick to the wall. With limited time, the lefties really looked good in the spring and, while I feel the minors may have helped Ricky, he is doing really well up in the bigs so letting them stew down there when they are owning doesn’t make any more sense than seeing if one of them works up in the pros….
Thomas being the mop-up guy . . .
you’d expect him to pitch in a lot of losses. He’s the guy you want pitching when they are losing 8-1.
Just like to say...
I met Brad Thomas last year. He came into the grocery store where I work after a game one day with his family. He was real nice. He seemed a bit shocked to get people asking for pictures and autographs. Well, actuallu just me and my fellow Tiger fan co-worker. Even since then we always let up a cheer when we hear him pitching. It is a shame he isn’t doing better.
Just wanted to share that since I always see him ripped on around here. Not that it probably isn’t undeserved given his stats but I just wanted to let it be known, he is a cool guy.

No one is insulting Brad Thomas - human being.
Everyone is talking about Brad Thomas – abomination of a relief pitcher. Fans never get to really know a player personally, for the most part, and so what folks are “ripping” on Thomas for is his pitching performance.
Brad Thomas could be a deity or the greatest person in the world. If he’s pitching like utter crap, as he usually does, I would boo him and want him gone all the same. Even liking a player doesn’t preclude eventually seeing that they are no longer, or never were, capable of being good at their position (see my Dontrelle Willis love).
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
Yeah
Maybe he’s a great guy. In that case, maybe he’ll retire and start coaching. As long as he’s not doing damage to the Tigers.
