Adam Wilk, we hardly knew ye
On the last BYB Podcast, rookie LHP Adam Wilk was called a "placeholder" as the Tigers kept a roster spot warm for the soon to be called up Andrew Oliver.
Oliver is starting tonight, and David Purcey has been acquired via trade. The the placeholder is no longer needed.
Via the Official Tigers Twitter:
Tigers have optioned LHP Adam Wilk to Toledo to create room on 25-man roster for LHP David Purcey
And that, as they say, is that.
Wilk was impressive in his only big league appearance, allowing only one run in 3 2/3 innings in the blowout loss to the Red Sox Thursday. So the odds are good he'll be seen again.
We are talking about the Tigers' bullpen after all, where no job is safe...

So the Tigers DFA'd Robbie Weinhardt for four days of Adam Wilk
and used up an option on Wilk in the process.
I’d rather have kept Wilk than Enrique Gonzalez, Al Alburquerque or Dan Schlereth
Or DAVID PURCEY!

He'll be up again
Jeez… it’s not like they were expecting him to only be up for four days. The Tigers like him, remember?

I hope so
but as it stands, they used the few days gap between Coke’s start and Oliver’s start to add a bullpen arm, and they went the extreme way about doing it- burning an option and DFA’ing another pitcher. And after all that, they didn’t send down their weakest link.

It was my understanding it's not number of options but option years
From the ESPN primer
One common misconception about the rules is that a player may only be “optioned out” three times. Actually, each player has three option years, and he can be sent up and down as many times as the club chooses within those three seasons.

Yes, true
but Wilk had not used up any options yet. If he were to be called up and stay on the roster, he still would not use up an option. Today, he officially has used up one option, so he has two left. He can go up and down as often as they like this year and it’s still one option used.

Gotcha, he blew an option year
But, if he sticks in the next two years it doesn’t matter
or, if he would have come up and been sent down again this year it wouldn’t have mattered either.
After saying all this. I probably just would have let Robbie W. stay a little longer too.

Just another move that is puzzling
Robbie is just the kind of pitcher that JL doesn’t like very much, and DD loves to trade. He’s not six foot ten, throwing 100 MPH, but he’s traditionally had excellent control. He just needs to keep the ball down, down, down. I’ll take a good control pitcher like Robbie or Wilk over a wild man like Al Al. Sometimes, you just need a guy to come in and throw strikes. The Tigers are very short in that department these days.
But it’s odd that they do all this for just four days, so Leyland has an eighth bullpen pitcher to play with. He overmanages the bullpen, taking out effective pitchers, and he’s eventually going to find a guy that’s not on his game, while burning up the bullpen. Totally unnecessary.

Maybe Leyland doesn't like Weinhardt cause he sucks?
He cleared waivers, so that should tell you all you need to know about how good he is. He can’t even get anyone out in AAA right now.
Well, he does suck lately
Part of being able to DFA Weinhardt, as Tokarz mentioned somewhere, is that his 8.00ish ERA probably didn’t look so good to other teams, but his peripherals are a little better.
That being said, he’s been getting hit pretty hard for about a year now, between Detroit and Toledo, so I don’t get the love either. He was a good pitcher a AA and below. Perhaps his stuff just doesn’t translate well with more skilled hitter. A year is a pretty long slump.
The other sports are just sports. Baseball is a love. ~Bryant Gumbel, 1981
I get the love to some degree
He had pitched really well in the past and has major league stuff, so he deserved to be on the prospect radar and get his shot. But as long as he’s getting shelled by the International League, no one has any business complaining about his spot on the roster, 40 or 25 man.
Dombrowski loves his shitty relievers.
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.

Oh, thank goodness
I thought they might send down Enrique Gonzalez. Wilk must have looked too good. So glad we still have Enrique to eat up innings while giving up runs at an astounding rate.

Not to worry
Enrique should be DFA’ed when Coke comes off the DL. I believe they will nake a trade and get David Wright from the Mets and perhaps another hitter as well. Call me an incurable optimist! lol
I wish
Wright would cost too much for DD, but we can dream.
ONLY
Turner and Castellanos. Keep dreaming.

Sizemore
How do they justify giving up on Sizemore after only 17 games. What is their excuse concerning the50 game slumps of Inge and Raburn?!
Honestly, I think Leyland just didn't like SS. He's too impatient, especially with his job on the line.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Because
Raburn will most likely have a hot streak sometime this year and as far as Inge? The only reason the Tigers keep him around is merchandising. Too many fans buy Inge’s crap and go to the games to see him and that equals $$$$$.
David Purcey...
Greatest. Pitcher. Ever. Ryan Raburn: Greatest second baseman ever. Yep, I can smell the post-season already.
Leyland on Raburn and Inge
ever where i go and talk about the tigers most people say Inge can not hit but they like him .i for one cant stand him he is good but if you cant hit you belong at AAA ball at best.i did not like Inge when they called him up as a catcher.his best year was 06 that is it .and Raburn wish Leyland would bench Inge for good .maybe he would wont to be traded.and that would be good.you cant keep going out there making outs.that tells your pitchers something they wont get any kind of support.when a pitcher is busting his ass and a guy goes up there with a mind of well i made another out ? what does that tell your pitcher?
