Jim Leyland speaks: Batting order changes coming, bullpen issues

DETROIT, MI - MAY 02: Jim Leyland manager of the Detroit Tigers looks on while playing the New York Yankees at Comerica Park on May 2, 2011 in Detroit, Michigan. New York won the game 5-3. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)

When it rains, it pours.

With Brad Penny starting tonight, get ready for a long dose of BYB "favorite" Brad Thomas.

Why? Bullpen trouble.

Via John Lowe of the Freep:

Four relievers are not available for tonight's game against New York: Jose Valverde, Joaquin Benoit, Ryan Perry and Brayan Villarreal. Starter Phil Coke is available in the bullpen.

What's with Benoit? Supposedly he's being given time off to "regroup." Obviously, getting hit hard in recent appearances has everything to do with Benoit's need to gather himself.

But wait...there's more from the Marlboro Man!

For those of you (or should I say, almost everyone who has been watching the Tigers flail about at the plate) who have been calling for Jim Leyland to move the visibly struggling Magglio Ordonez down in the lineup, your wish is soon to be granted. But be careful what you wish for...

Magglio Ordonez likely will drop to No. 6 in the batting order, one behind Martinez, and Brennan Boesch will move up to the No. 3 spot for the foreseeable future, Leyland said.

Boesch? He's 3-35 in his last eight games. Well, at least it isn't Don Kelly.

If you then connect the dots, expect Victor Martinez, all but guaranteed to come off the DL Wednesday, to bat behind Miguel Cabrera. There's some much needed good news...

I see this as an excuse to post lineups

Why not this?

C Avila
2B Sizemore
LF Raburn
1B Cabrera
DH Martinez
RF Ordonez
SS Peralta
CF Jackson
3B Inge

I know why not- 1) it’s Leyland and 2) a catcher would be hitting leadoff, but that seems to make the most sense. Moving Sizemore down in place of Jackson or Peralta might too.

Anything that involves Jackson not leading off is fine with me.

This business with Ajax still leading off has gone from stupid to cruel. It’s been painful to watch..and even Jackson himself said that hitting 9th the other day took pressure off.

We’ll see what happens tonight with Dirks….

i like this lineup

maybe swap sizemore and avila though, sizemore has more speed and i think avila could knock sizemore in if AA was hitting in the two spot

Agreed

And I’d also put Raburn second and have Avila third.

No Boesch at all?

or on certain, under certain circumstances?

Boesch would slide in for Raburn or Ordonez

I’m assuming that thanks to his current slide he’ll be the fourth OF.

Kurt should do a poll...

looking at everyone’s take on Leyland and Dombrowski’s job security. I’d be interested to see what the general sentiment is on Leyland/Dombrowski job security.

I have been a Leyland defender over the years quite vociferously, but even I’ve about had it. He seems to be on auto pilot. Granted, the players haven’t exactly been propping up this team in any way, but isn’t that also part of his job? As someone said in another comment not long ago, has the game passed him by?

As to Dombrowski, he’s made some very solid moves over the year and some that have been horrible. In fact, possibly more that have been horrible. This farm system hasn’t lived up to expectations, in my opinion, all that well. It seems like players quit developing somewhere between Lakeland and Toledo.

#3 is a better spot

…for BB, in front of Miggy. He’ll get better pitches to hit and opponents will be less likely to take advantage of his aggressiveness.

La mafia

Sr. Ordonez should sit or better yet:
a. put
b. sent to Toledo to see if he remembers how to hit
The question is, what will Cabrera say.
Its time to watch the game, it"s going to be a long one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SORRY

WTF

Why Boesch in the 3 hole? Why not Martinez! Then bat Ordonez behind Cabrera. then Avila. Then Boesch.

Maggs behind Miggy right now wouldn't work

He’s not scaring anyone. They’d pitch around Miggy every time (instead of just 76% of the time)

Don Kelly batting 3rd again Leyland should just quit as manager.

I think Leyland has lost it,you don’t bat your utility guy 3rd in the lineup. This is just dumb baseball.

Alex Avila

Why can’t we bat him in the 3-Hole?

by 10inchexplosion on May 3, 2011 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

Makes sense

to me. You have to either have Boesch or Avila in the 3 hole if you ask me. I wouldn’t even play Jackson. Said in another thread last night that Casper Wells should get more at bats at the expense of Austin Jackson, and possibly Raburn. If Sizemore hits, Wells provides a 2nd defender out there when Jackson plays CF. We saw tonight what he can do. Got a hit, a walk and threw out a runner. He can contribute multiple ways.

I would DL Maggs. He came out and said he is hitting on one leg. Big deal he got two hits. He found two holes, he still can’t drive the ball like we need him to.

Instead of Dirks, I bring up Danny Worth to play 2nd base for me in the late innings, get some spot starts at SS and 3rd base. I got 4 outfielders as it is.

Boesch is batting third tonight

Jackson 8,
 Sizemore 4,
Boesch 7,
Cabrera 3,
 Martinez dh,
Ordonez 9,
Peralta 6,
Avila 2,
Inge 5.
Scherzer is starting.

Not bad...moving in the right direction

If AJax is coming out of his slump and Sizemore is for real, this is a lineup that can actually put runners on in front of Cabrera.

If AJax continues to slump for another week, perhaps we could move Sizemore to the leadoff and get someone else at #3.

Actually, the way that Boesch was hitting before his recent slump would look really good at the #2 spot in the order…a little pop but not major power, drawing a few walks, pulling balls through the hole on the right side…

bullpen

I said this the other night and I will say it again. We are one guy away from being very good, and that is Lester Oliveros instead of Thomas. I know he isn’t a lefty, but it doesn’t matter if you get outs.
