2. Dodger pitchers struggling - The Tigers get to face Clayton Kershaw, Chad Billingsley, and veteran Ted Lilly, all who have been struggling as of late. Kershaw has not won a game since May 13th, Billingsley has an ERA of 11.20 in his last 3 starts, and Lilly has been struggling after pitching after the 5th inning.
3. V-Mart and his sizzling bat - Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez is carrying a .329 average so far this season. In his last 10 games, he is 16 for 37 (.432) with 1 HR and 9 RBIs.
On Deck:
Tigers continue interleague play at home on Friday with a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. On Sunday, the Tigers will officially retire Sparky Anderson's number at Comerica Park.

Too much of a hassle to go tonight or tommorrow night,
but I’m gonna try and play hooky and catch the wednesday matinee. I still think Kershaw is the real deal. I would have preferred to miss his spot in the rotation. Billingsly has been lit up recently and Lilly’s a bum. 2 out of 3 would make me happy.
One guy to watch is Dee Gordon, the SS they just called up. It’s Tom “Flash” Gordon’s kid and he looks to have some real talent. Quicker than hell and has already made a bunch of highlight plays in the field.
What happened to the Avila at third experiment? Did Leyland give up on that already?

Tidbits
I wouldn’t list Kershaw as one of the struggling pitchers. He got hit a little bit in Cincinatti and Colorado, but still had great peripherals for those games. The reason Kershaw doesn’t have more wins, is because the offense sucks.
Any preview of a Dodgers series should begin with how awful their offense is and how good their starting pitching is. These will all likely be low scoring games, unless the Tigers offense goes off one day (Dodgers likely won’t). The Dodgers just finished a three game series against the lowly Astros in which they only scored four total runs and luckily won the third game 1-0 on a HR from their awful hitting catcher.
The Dodgers big news this year, besides the crappy offense is their injuries and all of the top prospects who have been called up because of it. Not earth shattering prospects, but the top ones in the Dodgers system. Dee Gordon now mans shortstop and leads off. His speed on the basepaths and range at shortstop are fun to watch. Jerry Sands came up earlier when Marcus Thames went out and manned left field for a little while but didn’t hit enough and was sent down when Thames came back. Rubby De la Rosa who you are missing, is pitching in the 5th spot while Jon Garland is out.
You will notice while playing the Dodgers that they have a pretty big black hole in their lineup from the #5 spot through the #9 spot. Andre Ethier can’t hit left handed pitching, so luckily for him the Tigers are throwing three RHPs. Matt Kemp has been a beast and is a leading MVP candidate in the NL. Loney has almost no power for a 1B and has only recently started hitting for an average. Uribe doesn’t hit much. Navarro/Ellis will be a black hole with the bat behind the plate (Barajas to DL recently) and left field will feature all glove and no bat Tony Gwynn Jr, or some bat and no glove Marcus Thames. Like I said, expect low scoring games in LA.
He may have had a good outing in last start against the Reds, but his ERA is still above 5 in his last 3 starts. That’s high enough to be called struggling to me. But that’s just me :)

Yeah, but the game before that was a two-hit, 10K shutout.
Dodgers have a laundry list of problems, but Kershaw ain’t one of ’em.

ERA and Wins
are bad pitching stats to use. Even more so for smaller sample sizes. So yes, based on faulty measurements Kershaw may be struggling.
vr, Xei
There are a lot worse stats than ERA
Wins being one of them.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
ERA is the only stat we can really use for a small sample size of three starts
“Struggling lately” is a pretty ambiguous term anyway, but an ERA over 5 paints a clear-enough picture for the 3 hours that we’re going to be seeing him.
That’s why I always use previous 3 starts. It paints a pretty picture.

Well, I don't want to argue
just that wins and ERA as a stat is poor. I’ll zip my lips on the other stuff said.
No arguing here.
I love feedback, good or bad. What stat would you want to measure a pitchers performance by?
by MatthewLaFave on Jun 20, 2011 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Since you asked
I’d nix the 3 start stuff, or use it to supplement a larger sample size. Perhaps seasonal along with something short term like you did, but I would do atleast last five starts. Then I’d use the triple slash of ERA/FIP/xFIP along with K/9 and BB/9. If there is some big disagreement between ERA, FIP and xFIP I’d point out another stat showing the pitcher lucky or unlucky over the sample using something like BABIP, LOB% or HR/FB. You could throw in record but don’t use it as part of any analysis to say a pitcher or pitchers have been struggling. It’s just that ERA and Wins is lazy and usually wrong for the small samples.
The Dodgers will score runs this series
You underestimate the power that the former AL Central stalwarts Casey Blake and Juan Uribe have over Tiger pitching. I know this Tiger fan has nightmares recounting all the times, while with the White Sox, that Uribe played the Tigers sporting a .220 batting average and proceeded to crush balls all over the yard. And there was no one we were happier to see get traded to the NL than Casey Effing Blake (23 HR in 340 AB’s vs. the Tigers), well other than Luke Scott, if and when he gets moved.
Also, don’t forget the inevitable "we don’t know how to get former Tigers out" 3 for 4 day that Thames will have on Wednesday.

Nah, even Donny Baseball knows about Thames...
…and only plays him against lefties. Even then, he can’t break .200.
But of course, he still plays a stellar left field.

off topic question
but did anyone happened to get a screenshot of Raburn and his dad and his daughter yesterday? I heard they showed something after the top of the 2nd was over, if that helps anyone in finding it….

You're welcome
It was more fun than listening to this Indians game.

I'll be at games 2 and 3 of this series.
Didn’t get tickets for Monday’s game because I had work scheduled and didn’t know when I’d get done. Just as well, as the matchup tonight is Kershaw v Penny.
The Dodgers can score runs at times, but they’re very dependent upon Matt Kemp, and they all seem to have problems hitting a curve ball. I mean, to an extreme degree for a major league team. I watch a lot of Dodger games. They’re my sorta favorite NL club, and I love listening to Vin Scully. I think he’s the best in the business. Avoid Kemp and increase the number of breaking balls and we’ll do much better.

Kershaw vs Leyland's all righty line-up
1. Austin Jackson CF
2. Casper Wells, LF
3. Magglio Ordonez, RF
4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
5. Victor Martinez, C
6. Jhonny Peralta, SS
7. Ryan Raburn, 2B
8. Danny Worth, 3B
9. Brad Penny, P
Oddly enough...
Boesch is .345 against lefties this season and only .280 against righties.
