June/July Off-Topic Open Thread
We haven't had one of these in a while, and I figured that it would be nice to get away from the same old topics in post-game recaps including (but not limited to): complaining about Ryan Raburn and Brandon Inge, rosterbating and talking about what the other 3 relevant AL Central teams (Royals excluded, of course) are doing.
So what should you talk about instead? Well, some football player picked up a car the other day. If random feats of strength aren't your thing, the Nats are at a Hansel-like level of hot right now. Or you can laugh at random basketball players throwing goofy honorary first pitches.
And if you're watching the Giants-Indians game on ESPN right now, we can talk about that too. Go nuts, BYB.

Just finished watching Justified season 1, second disk
Through Netflix. At first I wasn’t really into it but the constant reunion with Deadwood actors and the season-long story arc peppered by random cases is starting to pull me in. After season 1 though I’m switching to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, for something lighter. At some point I’ll watch the Wire. Any other shows worth watching (disc-only)?
And go Giants!
Wait til October...
I'm a fan of all those shows
Except Deadwood, which I haven’t seen. The Wire is an absolute must-watch. I’ll watch House occasionally, but those episodes get very repetitive. I’m a fan of Mad Men too, and I’ve heard that Burn Notice (on USA) is entertaining.
Nice.
Since college, ironically, I’ve gotten hooked on more TV shows than is healthy (some still going, others long cancelled)…
Community, Arrested Development, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Modern Family, Mad Men, Dexter, Buffy (yes… Buffy), Firefly, and some others. It’s sad… But the best show that I couldn’t ever live without is Doctor Who.
But yeah, that was just me rambling on TV shows I watch. It’s probs not helpful info at all.

Dexter is good
So is Sons of Anarchy. Also like Reaper (two seasons on Netflix instant stream- it’s kinda random).
Also how have you not mentioned The Walking Dead?

Ahh
The Walking Dead is awesome. My roommates and I watched every episode last year. Pumped a new season is starting in a few months.
The final season of Entourage is starting later this month too. Probably my favorite show.
Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it's usually something unusual
Yea it really did
it took a really dark twist. It had a whole new feel; kind of like the original crew moved on to new projects and handed it over to a new team.

OH DUH!!!
My girlfriend loves the Walking Dead. WIN!

It's HBO series
I started watching that year ago , when I waiting for True Blood
Someone who like blues , jazz , New Orlean & Louisiana music – just enjoy
It's done by David Simon, creator of "The Wire"
It’s not as good as “The Wire,” but then again, what is?
LOST
Not sure if you’ve seen it or not, but I watched 6 seasons in about 6 months via Netflix.

I really enjoyed the first season of Justified
But the second season absolutely blows it out of the water.
I first read that as "the second season absolutely blows"
and was about to resort to fisticuffs to resolve that debate.
Season 2 of Justified
Was about as entertaining as television gets, as far as I’m concerned. The acting from Olyphant, Goggins and Martindale last season was nothing short of fantastic.
This is what you do...
sourdough bread, pastrami cut thin but not falling apart, muenster cheese, and honey mustard.
Layer your pastrami as desired, add your cheese but don’t overwhelm the sandwich, and a nice smattering of honey mustard. You my friend have just made a deelicious sammich.
From your friend in the deli.
Or you take a decent italian bread (preferably a loaf that you slice yourself)...
toast it and add turkey (over roasted or smoked), cheese (preferably provolone or mozzarella), and bruschetta.

This reminds me of a story
Years ago, when my great-nephew was about four, he and his father were out grocery shopping. A lady was giving out samples of something and Stephen asked his dad (Mark) if he could go get some. Mark said “Sure.” Mark said he watched him go over, the lady said something, Stephen shook his head and came back to his dad and said “Dad — she ’s giving away farty cheese”

Without it, we wouldn’t have Cheez-Its.
So yeah… that would suck.

I don't really like their last two albums at all
I thought All That You Can’t Leave Behind was pretty good, if uneven at times. Achtung Baby was the last truly great album they’ve done. For the most part, though, I agree with Kurt’s statement when rating U2 as a live act. I saw them on the Vertigo Tour in Chicago early on in that tour and I was kind of put off by the pure spectacle of it all. Give me the simple stage setups of bands like Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen. I’d rather not be distracted from the music by the flashing lights and such, but I understand that holds more of an appeal to other people. I have a higher appreciation for their earlier shows, when they had something to prove. Those shows in the eighties were a thing to behold. They had some force behind those early shows.
I've got to confess ignorance on this one
I don’t have much experience with concerts (I can name all the ones I’ve been to on one hand, though I plan on fixing that). That said, I’ve heard that the U2 show was one of the best of the past decade, and I’d still love to go see them.
Also Snow Patrol (their opener for a bunch of shows) is my second favorite band. So that’s a bonus.

Nothing post-Achtung for me, thanks
They went from a band that made songs to a band that made stadium-ready anthems.
That being said, their early stuff is scary-good.

I enjoy cheese curds
we don’t have enough of those around these parts but some of the best I ever had came from the Dyckesville Bowl in Door County, Wisconsin. It really was a bar/bowling alley with like 4 lanes or something. Best curds by far. It was amazing. I also enjoyed the curds at the Korner Bar in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.

is always a stop when I head to Miller Park headed through Chicago…..
made the trip once this year and returned to the D with a bounty of cheese curds….

If you're ever up north of the border...
fries + gravy + cheese curds = poutine
Greatest thing Quebec’s ever contributed to Canada (aside from early-’90s Mitsou videos).
by frisbeepilot on Jun 29, 2011 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions
oh you canadians with your firm belief of your northness
I’d have to go southeast to get to canada. Or Montreal for that matter!
But I agree I’d like some poutine

He said "north of the border"
As far north as you are, Kurt, you’re still south of the border. Speaking of, are there any Taco Bells in the UP?
by Rob Rogacki on Jun 29, 2011 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions
actually, I am still northwest of the bordre
the bridge at Sault Ste Marie is definitely southeast. Is there some rumor there’s only one border with canada? because those border guards in the Sault are pretty damn sure that’s a border when you cross it.

we wouldn’t get to hear Rod say " he threw him that 98 mile an hour cheese". :)
Speaking of Rod, couple of night ago he and Mario decided that you might call Willie Mo Pena “country strong”. Sorry, I disagree. After watching his homer Friday night, I believe you can call him “continent strong”.

And by some, I mean a few. Very good, not too salty, just not many for an order. It was at Michael’s in Verona.

if so please shoot me an email, there’s a link in my profile.
Yup!
Marlins @ Cubs, July 14
Las Vegas 51s vs Tucson Padres @ Fort Wayne, Indiana, July 15
(I was mostly looking for a baseball game anywhere in the A-level Midwest League anywhere between Chicago and Detroit on the 15th, and despite the Fort Wayne Tincaps being out of town that weekend, there is, oddly enough, a AAA series being held in a single-A stadium. Strange, but I’ll take it. Good seats still available.)
Dick Williams died today.
On MLBN, they showed a replay of the ‘84 series scene where Goose didn’t want to walk Gibby and they had all the audio of Williams, Gossage, and Sparky’s reaction. I love watching this scene. Oddly, however, I think it shows more of Sparky’s personality than Williams.

I’ll always remember him in those brown/yellow/whites of the Pads in ‘84. Thoses uni’s were awesome!
