Mono knocks Brandon Inge off his feet and straight to the 15 day DL

Well, this news is totally out of the blue.

Via the Official Tigers Twitter:

Brandon Inge placed on 15-day DL retroactive to 6/2 with mononucleosis. Tigers have recalled C Omir Santos from Toledo.

Inge has the Kissing Disease? Ewww.

Seriously, I have to wonder if two weeks rest will be enough to get the Tigers' 3rd baseman back to 100%. Inge may be under the weather for more than a month, or longer.

Via the Mayo Clinic:

Most signs and symptoms of mononucleosis ease within a few weeks, but it may be two to three months before you feel completely normal. The more rest you get, the sooner you should recover. Returning to your usual schedule too soon can increase the risk of a relapse.

I'm sure some of you can vouch for this from personal experience.

As the Tigers have called up a catcher in Omir Santos to take Inge's roster spot, they must plan on replacing him at 3rd base with players currently on the roster. On the bright side, being Inge's offensive production has fallen off a cliff, two plus weeks of Don Kelly and Danny Worth manning the position should be considered an upgrade.

Santos was up in April when Victor Martinez was on the 15 day DL, played in all of two games, getting one start. I expect more of the same this time around. Santos is mere a place holder for the return of Magglio Ordonez, which is likely to happen next week.

As much as the most tenured Tiger is loved by many, there's a sizable part of the fan base who have been hoping for the Tigers to begin life without Brandon Inge sooner than later. You've gotten your wish, at least for the short-term.

This may actually help us....

Don Kelly is about as good at 3rd and is hitting better (read above .200) , and Werth is a pretty good defender who if I’m not mistaken has played 3rd @ Toledo this year. Now if only we can get Inge to makeout with Rayburn to put him on the DL so Santiago can play…..

friend of mine had mono in Dec

Wasn’t able to return to work until March. Still has issues with excessive activity. This was a normal, athletic 31 year old. I don’t know if there are different strains like cold and flus, but it could be a month or two before Inge is back at full strength

It may be just me...

but did it cross anyone else’s mind at first that the whole mono thing is fabricated to get rid of him? Not that I actually think that’s the case, but it sure gave me a good laugh.

Steve Mason won the Calder Trophy in 2009 and had mono the whole season

You have to think that hockey is a much more exhaustive sport than baseball. Come on Brando, man up!

Mono has tons of different levels, dude.

Few people in high school had it. One guy, perfectly healthy soccer player, was out of school six months. Another was gone a few weeks, from what I remember. It affects different people in different ways. Casey Kotchman missed most of the 2006 season from mono.

by john.kmiecik on Jun 3, 2011 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Could this have been affecting his play?

Not that I expected much out of him anyway, but is it possible that he’s been attempting to play through a “cold” for weeks now?

by spartan37 on Jun 3, 2011 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldn't doubt it.

Inge is known to fight through injuries to keep playing, so this isn’t that far-fetched of an idea.

by john.kmiecik on Jun 3, 2011 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Another idea...

How about moving Jhonny to third and having Worth and Santiago split time at short? This would make the infield defense better and would keep the words “Starting Third Baseman Don Kelly” from being something I have to deal with for the forseeable future.

I know…not gonna happen…

by Rogo on Jun 3, 2011 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think it would upgrade the defense that much.

Or the offense for that matter. I don’t think Kelly is all that good but Worth and Santiago aren’t good hitters either.

At this point, I’m not moving Peralta anywhere. He’s playing so well, why mess with him?

by Nick Galea on Jun 3, 2011 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I’d heard nothing but terrible things from my Indians fan friends when Jhonny played 3rd for them anyway.

Just leave him alone, and be glad that Detroit has a SS who’s actually pretty good overall right now (please continue for 2 or so more years, Jhonny).

Why Omir Santos?

Is Victor okay?

by Tigerdog1 on Jun 3, 2011 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

as DH?

I have a small concern that JL never got used to the idea of not having a catcher on the bench. If that’s the case, he’d rather have Santos to cure his nervousness and Casper could be sent down when Magglio returns. Hope that’s not the case, but…..

by Tigerdog1 on Jun 3, 2011 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

He still has to run as DH and having Victor catch when he's tweaked his groin already this season is a risk the Tigers really can't afford to take.

Victor can play 1B and DH. Not like the Tigers have a great bench anyhow. Casper is probably going down no matter what.

I have a grand idea: let's win a game.

by 13194013 on Jun 3, 2011 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Eventually, I agree that Casper will probably go down

although I’d option Raburn instead until he re-learns how to make contact with the ball.
But if Santos call up is related to concerns about Victor, that’s fine. If JL decides that we need three catchers, just more fuel for the FIRE him.

This is probably the move to put Maggs on the roster on Monday

They really aren’t using that last spot on the bench much anyway. Kelly is going to play 3rd and he’s the emergency C and so they need another emergency C but really, Santos isn’t going to play. Since you’re going to have this need for 3 games, might as well just make it a meaningless player and not jerk with someone with actual talent.

They like to use Kelly in the outfield too and if he’s playing 3rd all the time, need another outfielder.

I wonder how long he has had this . . .

. . . could explain a lot about his lackluster performance this year.

i think the wrist injury

And knees that needed surgery take care of that

I sense a tad of sarcasm

There was a lively debate about it a couple days ago on BYB. Now that Oakland is converting SS to a 3B, and with no real prospect in the minors a 2B, it didn’t make any sense to me. We’ll see how this plays out.

3rd base

Now that he’s gone why not sneak in someone who can hit, like David Wright maybe. And for a double play send Rayburn somewhere else, as they say the change will do him (and us) good.

How do you expect to land David Wright? The Mets aren’t going to give him away for nothing.

His name is Raburn.

by john.kmiecik on Jun 3, 2011 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Wright is injured

He will probably be out as long as Inge. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t look into it, but Wright won’t help us during Inge’s mono.

When Inge is healthy again

How much time can he spent in Toledo for his minor league rehab assignment?

Seeing some live pitching in the minor leagues might actually help him. He needs to work on his swing with live pitching. Mono or no mono, time away and practice is what he needs. It would probably help Raburn and Ajax too!

All Star Break

Sorry folks don’t expect anything until then. Reyes should be on the market then but he and Wright will be too much to pay for if the team isn’t in 1st. by then. Even then it might cost us too many prospects for a rent a player like Reyes. Got to believe there will be a 2nd baseman and 3rd baseman available at the trade deadline and I mean players who play average defense and hit at least .250 or better.

by LarryLive on Jun 3, 2011 6:08 PM EDT reply actions

Keep this in mind

Reyes comes with TWO first or supplemental round draft picks- and there are very few prospects in theTiger system that are worth that much. So don’t sweat the loss of most of these guys. Just don’t give away a Turner or Castellanos, or anything crazy like that. If you can turn Andy Oliver or Charlie Furbush into a Reyes rental plus two high picks, I’d do that all day long. If you can turn them into David Wright for a season and a half and then two picks, I’d do that too.

Was about to jump on the Beltran bandwagon

But I forgot about the picks Wright or Reyes would be worth. Lots of teams will be all over these guys but I’d at least like to see the Tigers throw their hat in the ring.

I had mono a few years ago.

My case wasn’t so bad — I felt pretty normal by about the 6-week mark — but when it’s raging full-on, you can actually feel your liver bulging out. Excessive physical activity is a HUGE no-no.

Also: it makes you want to sleep 18 hours a day and eat nothing. And your eyeballs hurt.

Fun!

by frisbeepilot on Jun 3, 2011 6:16 PM EDT reply actions

Have a feeling if its real, Inge tried to play through it

When he couldn’t take it anymore, only then did he tell anyone. Similar to the knee issue in 2009.

I missed all of 2nd quarter at school… and still had to take midterms. and didn’t fail. surprisingly.

Mononucleosis

Serious business

Maybe the Tigers can wean themselves off of Inge now? I recognize who and what he is to this team, and I m not a hater. But Homeboy ain’t bringin’ the stats and he is bringin’ the age. Time to start exploring future options @ 3B?

by H2OPoloPunk on Jun 3, 2011 6:58 PM EDT reply actions

Interesting glimpse at Brandon's current value...

He goes to the DL and we replace him with a 3rd catcher who will never play? Brandon, you are officially a spare part.

But all the same – get well get well soon we want you to get well!

Mono is miserable

I am almost 65 years old. About 15 years ago I got pneumonia. I expected to miss a week or two. I missed 7 weeks of work and felt lousy the first 2 months back. I ended up in the hospital and it turns out I recovered very well from the pneumonia. It was the “adult onset mono” that wiped me out!!! Brandon is not a kid and this will be tough. I predict he won’t be back until August 1st. Maybe we can start a pool on when he will be back. He is a great fielder, but frankly with Inge’s bat I think Kelly or Santiago is an upgrade

In a flurry of moves, the Tigers activate Guillen, Inge, and Zumaya

They will all participate in the “jersey off our backs” game.

This will be a very interesting development. I don’t think the organization would be wise to try to handle this replacement internally…especially since it could very well be much more than 15 days. However, I don’t think they want to close the book on Inge yet either…not with 1.6 years left on the contract. Perhaps you’ll see a trade for someone with a little bit of flexibility, like Ty Wigginton or Jamey Carroll that could help us out at 3B for now and maybe 2B when Inge returns. I know those names aren’t too sexy, but that’s the sort of deal I’m feeling right now.

It's probably because I'm in Spain

but when I saw “Mono knocks Brandon Inge off his feet” I pictured a monkey (mono in Spanish) running onto the field (possibly sent by a BYBer?) and taking down Inge. And it was a wonderful wonderful picture.
