Roster churn: Purcey back, Oliver to Toledo, Ordonez returns Tuesday
The Tigers made a roster move after yesterday's game, and another will be soon to come, likely after tonight's game with the Rangers. Neither is unexpected.
With David Purcey due to rejoin the team today after missing the past weekend on paternity leave, the Tigers needed to make room on the 25 man roster.
Andrew Oliver drew the short stick after Sunday's win over the White Sox.
Via the Freep:
To create room on the 25-man roster, the Tigers optioned left-handed pitcher Andy Oliver to Triple-A Toledo. Oliver started two games for the Tigers, posting a 0-1 record and 6.52 ERA.
In those two starts, Oliver showed flashes of his much hyped talent, but not enough to overshadow the fact he really does need more minor league seasoning. No worries, the highly thought of Oliver will be back in Detroit the next time the Tigers need someone in the rotation.
As for the injury rehab of Magglio Ordonez, Mud Hens fans will get to see him swing the bat for one more day.
Via the Twitter of MLB.com's ever vigilant Jason Beck:
Leyland said Magglio will take one more day with @MudHens.
In three games with the Mud Hens, Ordonez is 4-12 with a double and an RBI. The Tigers right fielder will take over in his comfort zone, batting 3rd the order, on Tuesday.
Recently called up roster placeholder Omir Santos already has his bags packed...if he even bothered to unpack them.

Boy How Time Flies
talking about the roster.
I don’t know where all the seasons went. Verlander currently has the fourth most years of MLB experience among all the Tigers pitchers.
When you think about it in context of the roster it makes sense but my gut is asking me where did all those seasons go?
Any reports on how Magglio's swing is looking?
It’s hard to read into the numbers with such a tiny sample. More interesting to me is if he’s getting more pop and better timing on his at-bats now that he can turn on both ankles again.
He seemed to run the bases well
And was actually driving off his back leg at the plate. But other than my small observation, all I read is the same things you do.
He looked much better than he did at the beginning of the year
Are we sure Santos is going to be headed down
and not either Dirks or Wells? With Kelly getting most of the 3B time, I could see Leyland wanting a third catcher on the bench for some strange reason.
No, as Santos going down is just guessing on my part
But Santos has yet to play, and isn’t likely to with Avila and VMart . The Tigers have gone all season without a 3rd catcher (this past weekend excluded), I don’t see a reason why they’ll start now.
Keeping Santos would essentially turn the 25 man roster into a 24 man roster. If he is ever needed because of injury, he’s an hour drive away.

if he stays....
expect to see some of miggy at 3rd. In other words, Omir is out.
No need to hate
Kid has some potential. I think they want to avoid Bonderman-ing him. Which I fully agree with.
Oliver was the right move
The kid was all nerves this trip to the bigs. Over time the nerves will go away, his talent will stay.
