Tigers Should go All in in 2011
The trade deadline is getting closer and we are starting to hear some rumors. We are hearing Beltran, Kuroda and Wandy Rodriguez. I know any of these guys would be an upgrade, but would they really put the Tigers over the top and win a championship?
The Answer I come up with is no. In the playoffs if you do not have 3 studs in your rotation, you're not going to make it out of the first round. Right now we have 1 1/2 with Verlander and Scherzer. I really think the organization should be looking at what it takes to land an ace. It's all speculation of course, but it would be interesting to see what the Mariners would want to get Felix Hernandez. Would a package of Turner, Castenallos and Fields with a couple other low level guys get it done?
I know it would kill the system, but hear me out. You only get so many chances of winning a division with your 2 superstars in thier prime. First round they would probaly face the Redsox. Matchups would be Lester/Verlander, Scherzer/Beckett, Bucholz/Porcello. We have all seen games get away quickly with Scherzer and Porcello on the mound. Giving up big leads out of the gate is not going to win you a title. Ilitch isn't getting any younger and I wouldn't be surprised in Dave's last year of his deal he went to Ilitch and asked him if it was time to cash in some prospects.
In the end It's nice to get to the playoffs, but I want to see a World Series winner and so does Ilitch. What do you think? Should they get an elite ace? or can they get is done with another solid starter and hope Turner matures quickly and fills that role?

I doubt that would get it done
but it might be close, and I’m not quite sure if I would do that. You have to factor in the money side of that equation. King Felix is in the second year of a 5 year 78 million dollar deal (which averages to 15.6 mil per season.) Turner, Castellanos, and Fields all have yet to have their first (legal) beer. Since those three are all still quite young, they are still signed to team friendly long term contracts that add up to much less than Felix’s 15.6 million per year. While I’m too lazy to look up their exact contracts, I would guess that they would not add up to too much more than 5 million or so, leaving a net gain on 10 million dollars per year if you picked up Felix. And guess who the Tigers just signed to a deal around that annually? Victor Martinez got a little over 10 million with 12 million annually, but still, you have to factor in money in so you are basically trading Turner, Castellanos, Fields and 5/6 of Victor for King Felix.
Although it should be noted that signing players in FA doesn’t always work out as well as it has with Victor so far. DD signed Ingy and Benoit to deals around 5.5 mil per season, but he also got an absolute steal with Jhonny Peralta at 5 mil per season.
And there are Rooomers that the Tigers will call up young Mr. Turner on July 20 to be their fifth starter. Even if they don’t, he will likely be ready for the start of 2012, so if you consider Turner likely to reach his potential which is where King Felix is now, you are trading away Castellanos and Fields for your second ace arriving a year earlier but being significantly older and more expensive.
It would not even be close to happening.
The Tigers don’t have the bullets in the minors to get Felix.
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
quite frankly
we value Turner higher than Seattle does and Seattle probably values Felix more than we do.
That’s not a good recipe for a trade.

Very true
I was not only thinking about Felix. What about other aces in baseball. Do you think Turner will be a ace in a year or 2? With recent drafts with Porcello and Miller we have seen that your top pick does not always perform as well as you hope.

Felix is flat out worth more than what is in the Tigers minor league system.
He’s a proven starter with amazing stuff. I don’t even know how anyone could think that the Tigers would come close to getting Felix. As someone who follows the M’s, yeah, it won’t happen unless you throw in several MLB ready bats, starter quality not bench quality and the aforementioned minor leaguers.
Can I start banning rosterbating?

Yeah, and we get four more after this year.

Exactly
the core of this team, it’s heart, is quite young. Only VMart is a star player over 30 on the Tigers. This team’s window is opening, not closing. Bad contracts continue to come off the books, and we’re still going to be able to improve over the offseasons. There’s absolutely no reason to be the farm on a Tigers team that will improve over the next few years with the simple passage of time.

Isn't "All In" the White Sox slogan for this year?
How’s that working out for them?
"I'm a simple man. I like pretty, dark-haired women and breakfast food" - Ron Swanson
It was Michigan football's slogan for 2009
“All In for Michigan.” And we know how well that worked out.
I'll give you this
You put about the best package on the table that we have available. I still don’t think it would get done by Seattle’s standards. Furthermore, it would make our payroll a little wacky with that many big contracts.

Verlander Turner Castellanos Oliver
20 million dollars.
That might do it.

You
really think King Felix is that better then Verlander? All I was trying to get across is that I think the Tigers should be looking for an Ace. Whether it be Felix or Ubaldo, a dominant arm. As per rumors today doesn’t look like I am so crazy.

What I think is funny
is your scenario of playing the Sox. What if they pass the Yankees? We play the Yanks then. So, I guess neither team can advance since the teams do not have 3 studs. Unless you consider Colon and Garcia studs.
Is your trade proposal
Enough in your eyes to get Verlander? No? Then why would another team take it to get their ace.
Because Rosterotic Asphyxiation doesn't take into account other teams generally prize their best players as much as the trading team does.
So prospects, even fringe ones, become gold that no other team can resist.
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
Gigglepants
Verlander, Avila, and Castellanos might be enough to get Felix. Maybe. He’s awesome, and he has probably supplanted Ichiro as their beloved franchise player.
