Tigers outright Brad Thomas to Toledo
Brad Thomas has been in a weird sort of baseball purgatory. He was placed on the disabled list with an elbow problem -- not a serious one -- in the middle of May. On June 14, he was added to Triple-A Toledo's roster to begin his rehab appearances. He compiled a 3.48 ERA in 10.1 innings there since. But he also reportedly felt some soreness and needed a break in the middle of the rehab. Yet despite struggles among Tigers left-handers, there just didn't seem to be any place in the major leagues for him.
Pitchers have up to 30 days for their minor league rehab, and you can tell by the date Thomas's time is up. So he was outrighted to the Mud Hens. That takes him off the 40-man roster. Thomas has until Sunday to decide whether to accept the assignment or leave the organization. Meanwhile the Tigers have a roster spot open for Carlos Guillen, who is expected to join the Tigers at some point this month.
You hate to say it, but I don't think any Tigers fans would be sad to see him go. By all reports, Thomas is a friendly individual and you hope the best for him. He just didn't work out well with the Tigers.

Not for nothing
But one-way tickets from Detroit to Sydney, Australia tomorrow start at $2,500. $7,000 if you go business class.
Time for The Wanker (aka The Tosser) to take a walkabout
"All aboard! There is plenty of room."
Brennan Boesch Bandwagon Conductor
He might be a wanker
but he’s our wanker (for the moment), and I hope he does well wherever he ends up (except against the Tigers, of course).
I'm going to miss calling him Wanker.
He’s our Wanker and I hope he does do well.
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
I thought he was an ideal mop-up guy
Our pitching staff is so deep now that we don’t need a true mop-up guy.
Ideally our pen will look like this:
Valverde
Benoit
Coke
Al Al
Furbush
Perry
Purcey
I wouldn't mind Lester Oliveros as an alternate
"All aboard! There is plenty of room."

Swap him and Purcey
That jackass…

Should we start a betting pool, or is that a bit sick?

Thomas being outrighted means a couple of things
First, it means he had to clear waivers. Nobody can be outrighted without clearing waivers first. Second, since he has already been outrighted once in his career, he doesn’t have to accept the assignment. He can choose free agency either now or at the end of the season if he’s not back on the 40 man roster by that time. However, in order to collect on his contract, he’d have to accept the assignment.
I count 38 players now on the 40 man roster, so they didn’t need to remove a player to add los Carlos back to the roster. However, Thomas could not be optioned since his options are used up, so he had to be waived and outrighted if they didn’t want to put him back on the 25 man roster.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Is AlAl on the 40-man roster right now?
I don’t know how that works with the DL, but they could have left it at 39 if they expected him back soon.
21 yes; 60 no.
Players on the 21-day DL are on the 40-person roster. Players who go on the 60-day DL come off the 40-person roster until reactivation.
Thomas
With all the bashing….my take is…6-2 3.89 ERA would look pretty ok
on this years squad. Granted he is maybe hurt, maybe not great. But really,
is he abysmal?
