I just hope this isn't deja vu all over again

I’m having flashbacks to the 6 straight losses following last years break.

It’s far too early to panic, obviously. But damn, this is not how I was hoping the Tigers would start the 2nd half.

I do hope the BYB crowd at the game had fun regardless!

If Raburn gives up an im the park home run on a baffling play this Sunday,

Then I will jump on the collapse bandwagon.

68 games remaining games

If our luck turns from bad to good, like its bound to, then we should win 40 of them, and get into the play-offs.

by Keith-Allen on Jul 16, 2011 8:17 PM EDT reply actions

It's the same thing every year.

So do we get rid of 25 players or one manager. All i ever hear from JL is how the White Sox and Twins will be in it at the end.I want some one who say were going to win the division. This team dosen’t have the eye of the Tiger.

It's a different group of players every year

If they pitch well, they’ll win. If not, they won’t!

So if you're terrible at your job, it's your boss' fault?

I’ll pass that along to my boss next time I screw up. That should put the ol’man in his place! Have some accountability. Leyland isn’t throwing, catching, or hitting. There are 25 guys making a combined $100+ million dollars. If Leyland is the single linchpin that determines the assorted talents and weaknesses of all those players and make them succeed despite the odds against them, the experiences they have, and the skill level of the opponents, he may have the toughest job in the country.

More simply: the manager puts the players he has into situations that they are most likely to succeed in. When he does that, how can he be responsible when they fail? Of course he will be the domino who gets knocked over because he’s easier to replace than players with guaranteed contracts, but the blame is not his alone.

I hate Jonathon Ericsson.

by Brion on Jul 17, 2011 2:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Although...the boss does assume responsibility for the overall performance of the firm..

I completely agree that it’s not Leyland’s or McClendon’s fault when players don’t perform on a given day. That’s on the players.

However, it is the case that when a business flops, at the end of the day the management team is blamed regardless of where the failures originate.

It seems like Dave and Jim are a package deal. If they flop again this year they deserve to be replaced for failing to put together a winner when given ample resources. In fact, if they start the second half with a bad 15-20 game run and fall say 5 games back, I would endorse a change midseason.

That being said, I’m not ready to panic yet and I still think they are the favorites…but they don’t have a lot of margin for error. They need to get it together and quick.

One other point. People are criticizing everyone for jumping on the “here we go again with the second half flops” bandwagon. Well, if you flop four years straight and then lose two lethargic games to start the fifth second half….what the hell do you expect people to say? If they get swept by Chicago to start the second half, the Tigers and Jim deserve every bit of criticism they get, even if it is only three games.

I can respect that, however...

If you’re given a hammer when you need a saw, no matter how well you use the hammer the job will be shoddy. Leyland works with the tools provided to him by the higher-ups. More like a shift manager to Dombrowski’s general manager.

And I’m not panicking, either. I never had the Tigers pegged to win the division so there’s nothing for me to panic about :)

I hate Jonathon Ericsson.

by Brion on Jul 17, 2011 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok if you were manager would you

1) Play Inge at third everyday
2) Bat Kelly at the top of the order
3) Not use your best relief pitcher in a crucial inning
4) Play Raburn at second
5) Bat Maggs in the 3 spot when he is hitting 200
This list could go on and on, the Tigers had 5 All Stars this year there is talent on this team.

by swish330 on Jul 17, 2011 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

5 All stars on a roster of 25

You complain about Inge, Raburn and Kelly. Then there’s the sinkholes of Thomas, Gonzalez, Perry, Villarael, the randomness of Benoit, Coke, Porcello. Consistency should be established. Note how most of that is pitching.

1) And replace Inge with Kelly is the only option. But Kelly is probably more valuable in corner outfield spots in late games. It’s not an easy decision. With Dirks here and performing decently, if Jackson returns soon then Kelly may have the starting 3B job. Inge shouldn’t be on a major league roster at this point but he is owed a lot of money so he’s going to stay. I put more of the onus on Dombrowski for Inge.
2) With Avila and Peralta being so good, no I would not. However Kelly was relatively effective in the 2-spot.
3) I don’t know what you’re referencing but I’m sure it was a one time thing you feel slighted for.
4) And replace him with.. who? Santiago is just as bad this year and Rhymes lost the job after winning it by being even worse. Again, the onus is on Dombrowski for not bringing in a quality player (or moreso for letting one go in Polanco).
5) Fuzzy numbers! In July Magglio is batting .344 and .301 overall since returning from injury. So yes, Magglio could be a #3 hitter.

Should we go through all the things that make Leyland a good manager? If we’re all so great at running a team, why are we sitting at home talking about it and not doing it?

I hate Jonathon Ericsson.

Lack Of Offense

People all want to trade Porcello for a starter, take a look at this putrid offense. Keep blaming Leyland for putting whoever out there. DD better find a bat somewhere and I don’t mean Guillen. Today was a joke.

Keep blaming Leyland for the offense, but look outside the organization for help? That’s some grade-A logic right there.

You mean that same offense that has 5 hitters at or around .300?

Sounds putrid to me…dint get me wrong, today sucked, but the offense hasn’t been too shabby.

The offense is effective but streaky.

Tigers are 5th in the AL in runs scored, 12th in the AL in ERA. Consistently in those same areas. I don’t have fun stats for defense because i’m lazy, but if they’re not near the bottom of the AL, I’d be stunned.

But hey, it’s been a few bad offensive games so I guess that’s the whole season, right?!

Infield defense has been putrid

What a dogshit game

Vmart makes 4 outs with 2 swings and scherezer took the loss despite throwing a quality start….ugh…

Pretty sure there will still be baseball tommorow so this isn’t anything I can’t drink away this evening…
