What to Watch For:
1. Avila in beginnings of a slump? - July has not been so kind to Tigers catcher Alex Avila. In his last 10 games, he is only hitting .188 with 8 strikeouts. Manager Jim Leyland doesn't seem to be worried and states that Avila is just fatigued. Unfortunately for Avila, he won't get much rest as we head into the last 2 months of the season. Avila is a career .316 hitter against the White Sox.
2. Below hoping for some run support - If Tigers pitcher Duane Below wants to get his first win in the majors, he may be going against the right pitcher. Tigers hitters have had a lot of success against Mark Buehrle. Carlos Guillen, Austin Jackson, Victor Martinez, Magglio Ordonez, and Jhonny Peralta are all hitting .299 and above against him.
3. White Sox bats to look out for - White Sox outfielders Juan Pierre and Carlos Quentin have had a lot of success against the Tigers this season. Pierre is hitting .371 with 1 HR and 3 RBIs against Detroit while Quentin is hitting .367 with 4 homeruns and 9 RBIs.
On Deck:
Tigers return home on Thursday afternoon to kick off a 4-game series against the Angels.

Verlander vs. Weaver on Sunday.
"i think it will be mostly feast the rest of the year,"
Anybody ever see that Sampras v. Agassi commercial with the neverending tennis match?
Yeah…that’ll be this game. 0-0 into the 11th? 190 pitches for each pitcher..probably 30 ks between them..
Don't Panic!
JV's had enough tough luck against quality pitchers
That 1-0 loss to Haren, and didn’t Ogando beat him 2-0 earlier this year too? Hopefully, we can turn the tables on Weaver.

Pretty important series with the White Sox
Imagine if we sweep
drools
"Goaltending is a normal job, sure. How would you like it in your job if every time you made a small mistake, a red light went on over your desk and 15,000 people stood up and yelled at you."
-Jacques Plante
Very important
Whether the Sox buy or sell at the deadline really hinges on how they do this series and the next against Boston.
A Sweep Would be Huge
But I’ll settle for 2 out of 3 if I have to… ;-)

AccuScore: Tigers surge in AL Central
By Jonathan Lee, AccuScore 2 hours, 23 minutes ago
American League
This week is all about Detroit. The Tigers were the only team in either league to add so much as four percent to its playoff probability, and it did much more than that. It opened up a gulf in what looks like the final remaining playoff race in the AL. They added 31.9 percentage points in the projected postseason standings. Conversely, the Indians fell 30.5 percentage points and are only 23.9 percent likely to win the Central Division.
The Tigers went 4-2 in the past week while the Indians went 2-4, opening up a two-game gap in the real standings. More important than the two-game deficit is that the level of play from Cleveland continues to slide back from its torrid early season form. The Indians have scored just eight runs during their current four-game losing streak. Detroit is still winning games despite its pitcher’s not throwing particularly well (outside of Justin Verlander(notes)). The Tigers recently acquired Wilson Betemit(notes) and had Carlos Guillen(notes) return to health. They have the resources to continue to improve through the trade market while Cleveland does not.
Raburn at 3rd base??
15 games at third, .821 fielding average. F’ brilliant. Leyland needs a strait jacket.
Gets the bat into the lineup though

Career: .246 vs. lefties, 275 vs. rightys.
But last year he actually hit lefties better…312….77AB’s….4 dingers
"i think it will be mostly feast the rest of the year,"
But now he has Llloyd McClendon teaching him

Re: Raburn's bat
David, The past month he started hitting as if on cue, from previous years, which is good Finally,
but we’re talking about third base. His fielding % is .821 and Raburn’s career UZR at third base is an unthinkable -4.3 in only 128 innings, or -46.2 over 150 games.
I wonder what the over/under for mis-plays on bunts, errors, ground balls past him or botched is tonight.

If Avila is getting fatigued
this would be a great time for Raburn to start swinging the bat. That would let Alex sit a bit more with Victor catching and either Maggs or Guillen getting DH duty.
I love it.
Raburn at 3b is what I hoped for. That line-up is freaking amazing.
U.S. Cellular Field is a bandbox
We’re going to see some fireworks.
As long as those fireworks don't include a comedy of errors from Raburn
We might as well put Miggy over there.
It's an alligator in the swimming pool!
The thing will probably get too much chlorine and die.
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
I'd be afraid that Miggy would hurt himself.
Raburn is a great athlete. He’s quick, agile, and has a good arm. He just makes more fielding mistakes than the average player.
He just makes more fielding mistakes than the average player.
Which is why he shouldn’t be playing third base, a position he sucks at even more than normal.
He's actually a third baseman
I’ll take that over someone who hasn’t started at the position in almost 2 years.
That's not much of an argument.
A tree stump gives Raburn a run for his money defensively. And while that insults Betemit, it tells you just how awful Raburn can be through HYPERBOLE!
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
The great athlete phrase is one that is tired and needs to be sent to pasture.
Raburn is a servicable hitter but nowhere near a complete baseball player. His mistakes in the field speak for themselves. Raburn is a second half bat who should never see the light of day until late June, at earliest.
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
Really?!?
Kinda like a turd in the punch bowl, don’t ’cha think?
"i think it will be mostly feast the rest of the year,"
Not what I think at all
More like an alligator in a swimming pool. It’s gonna get crazy wild. This is not for the faint of heart.
Only thing Raburn has in common with a gator is they both can't catch
But I agree it won’t be for the faint of heart.
"i think it will be mostly feast the rest of the year,"
Raburn is a gator
He went to University of Florida.
Not what I think at all
More like an alligator in swimming pool. It’s going to get wet and wild.
dude, the sky has clearly fallen!
You’re standing on it!

Insanity
“doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
I can’t figure out who is crazier, JL for continuing to use Raburn in the IF …or me for continuing to hope that JL will someday figure out that he shouldn’t use Raburn in the IF.
I got it, I got it
He’s being showcased at third base! Could be part of that Guthrie, Uehara package!
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Thank you, rain.
I was all set to watch an hour’s worth of yet another Yankee game on Rogers Sportsnet, but because it’s raining in NY, they’re giving us the Cleveland Racist Nicknames game instead. Go Angels!
Point, Canada
Instead of showing the Pirates-Braves game that is still going to be played, ESPN is showing a 3-hour NFL pre-free agency special because the lockout ended today.
Below gets tagged tonight
Straight and 90 is recipe for lots o’ runs for the Sox. Hate the Sox, but the matchup isn’t good. I’ll be glad to be wrong.
