Game 102 Overflow #3 - Tigers at White Sox
Third time's a charm, right?
What happened since the last thread:
- Solo shots by A.J. Pierzynski, Miguel Cabrera and Paul Konerko (in that order) brought us to the current 6-3 scoreline.
- Chance Ruffin had a debut to forget: 1.2 IP, 3 H (2 of them homers), 2 ER to go along with 2 that were charged to Below in the 5th.
- A nice young Canadian chap stopped by for some witty banter. Unfortunately, he found us.

But anywho..a little off topic.
But since we were talking about your bullpen I thought I’d bring it up, and if I was to get one guy from your bullpen, I would definately choose Alburquerque..the guy has ridiculous strikeout numbers, he does have some problems with control, but when people do hit the ball off of him, lots of it ends up on the ground..I have been amazed by his performance this year.

AlAl is a freak, no question
but there’s definitely reason to worry about his elbow. He’s toned down the percentage of sliders a bit lately, at least.
Yeah..hopefully he doesn't do too much damage to himself in the future.
Because he has some big potential, 14.31 K/9….that would be a dream to have in our bullpen..

Purcey is like a lot of the relievers that the Tigers have in their system
hard throwing, some control issues
only, he’s had plenty of time to work out his issues and he hasn’t
Some of those in our system, no doubt won’t work out their issues, either and those that do have a promising future, but Purcey is pretty much toast by now, IMO.

Jim Leyland blew this game
Why bring in Chance Ruffin for his first action with the bases loaded and the game tied? It’s a pennant race and Phil Coke is in the pen. Why? These games matter. He pulled the same thing against the A’s, giving a close game away bringing in Purcey late and watching him walk the bases loaded. For all people complain about Leyland, this is the real issue. He needs to admit these games matter and start going for wins. This team is too passive.
it would save a lot of itme if teams just all dumped their players and let managers battle managers to see who wins
by Kurt Mensching on Jul 25, 2011 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions
he made a mistake tonight
managers don’t often lose games for teams, but when you mismanage the pen like that, yeah, you gotta blame him man.
by gonzosyntax on Jul 25, 2011 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions
That's sort of pointless to say
given that the game was already tied, and two more solo shots were scored. Even if, best case scenario, Below somehow gets the out, who’s to say Furbush doesn’t give up the HR he did later? This loss is on a squanderific offense.
I don't think he wasn't going for the win. He just made a stupid decision.
Most managers are idiotic about how they use their bullpen. Maybe they think their pitchers are wholly unable to function in an inning outside of their “role”?
by thepartybird on Jul 25, 2011 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Ruffin was as good as any of the middle relievers
Furbush, Purcey, former Olivaros, etc
but he should have left Below in there to work out of his own jam
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
he should demand his general manager get him better players
so he can have a winning percentage like Torre and Girardi

so everyone's forgotten about Phil Coke?
A vet just chilling in the pen and not pitching in pressure situations?
by gonzosyntax on Jul 25, 2011 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions
I think JL has his specialization roles all worked out
Have to get to the 7th, then will use Coke or Al Al depending on whether a L or R is up
before that, we have Purcey, Furbush, and prospect du jour
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Maybe so
But that’s kind of senseless strategy. He talks about leaning on his horses win games, but when he needs talent to come in and get a few innings out of the pen, he doesn’t do it? In most aspects I’m a Leyland supporter, but bullpen management is something that has been strange to me.
by gonzosyntax on Jul 25, 2011 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions
If you don't think he was trying to win...
you’re drunk.
He clearly didn’t have faith in Below to pitch himself out of that jam. He made a call and he was wrong.
And there’s nothing to say that Below wouldn’t have given up a three run bomb, either.
I have to say that I'm with Rook on this one.
it wasn’t inaction on Leyland’s part that cost the game. I think that a bigger play then who replaces Below is Carlos running into that out on the WP. That killed a rally (the last rally) and really stopped the momentum.
Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.
By 'going after the win'
I mean not just waiting for it to happen. It’ taking these close games and building a lead in the division instead of playing the win one lose one game. And you think the best decision was to bring in a rookie pitcher with zero IP in the majors to get one out? That rally killing base running miscue came after they could have made a better gamble with a vet (I’m not saying a late inning guy, but Furbush and Coke have both gotten outs in the bigs) to keep the game close, instead maybe giving up two runs, getting one back on the homer, than LEAVING the rattled greenhorn in there to let up another home run to a proven power hitter. I mean sure, anything can happen with any pitcher, but if you’re admittedly managing by your gut, and you’re gut tells you Chance Ruffin was the best gamble in that pressure cooker of a situation, than leave me out in your next trip to Vegas. By going after the win, I mean knowing this isn’t the time to get a young kid innings, or to just give Purcey some work (as in the case of the A’s game). Going after the win means putting your best foot forward and putting a stranglehold on tight games when you can. I don’t see that right now.
by gonzosyntax on Jul 25, 2011 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions
How do you know Below was rattled?
This seems more like a byproduct of Leyland’s adherence to two principles – the L/R match up and very specialized bullpen roles.
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
Maybe so
but it’s his tendency to make changes, seemingly just for the sake of the lefty/ righty match up, forgetting all other odds and factors. Below was doing fine until JL had him issue an intentional walk and put two on base. Then, he gets squeezed with Dunn up, so JL pulls in a kid that he admits he knows nothing about. Nothing, except that he’s right handed. And he thinks he’s improving the odds of winning. It doesn’t.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
good night, all
Better luck tomorrow.
