Daniel Schlereth promoted, Chance Ruffin optioned
I almost forgot about putting this on the blog since I've spent so much time on Twitter. In any case, the fact Ruffin was optioned and David Purcey is still a Tiger is as mystifying as it is disappointing.

This is so mindblowingly stupid I want to drink
Not only does Daniel Schlereth suck (seriously, command and control problem poster child) but Purcey needed to get the boot in that ’pen. Ruffin at least offered you okay stuff, and a good K rate. What the hell does either Schlereth or Purcey offer?

I think Purcey offers
Avila more opportunities to throw out base runners, and me a lot more opportunities to hit the bottle.
Schlereth offers to do the above with more velocity.
Because he's sh*t too.

Is this just because
of the worn-out bullpen from yesterday, and it will all be undone in a week or so (or less)?
if it's that's beyond stupid
let’s go back to Charlie Furbush (a starter in the minors and likely a swing guy at the MLB level, so he’s conditioned for long relief) getting pulled after 1/3 of an inning after Penny crapped the bed yesterday.
It looks to me like poor bullpen usage is now causing roster management issues in addition to costing us a chance to win ballgames.

the only reason i can think of
Is they might need Furbush to make a spot start due to someone in the rotation being traded

Which would be equally stupid
We need a fifth starter-not another hole in the rotation.

depends
If Porcello goes for Ubaldo, and there is another trade for a Fister/Marquis/random other 5th starter, they may need to plug Furbush in depending on when the guy(s) they trade for last pitched

I would agree
im kind if intrigued on the Bedard situation…

Did not see after game comments - Did anyone ASK Leyland why Furbush came out so quickly
or was it typical " How did you like Cabrera’s Home Run, Jim " OR " Jhony Perralta is swinging a good bat, what impresses you about him this year?
Jessu I hate the stupid fucking questions from the FOX guys. I know they are scared of ole Crusty, but maybe NAIL the old fart once or twice what’s he gonna do Not answer you?
What possible reasoning is used to make this move?!?
"i think it will be mostly feast the rest of the year,"

but seriously I don’t know. it’s stupid.

Reading other stuff
Purcey would have had to clear waivers if they sent him down. Which begs the question, who the hell who be stupid enough to claim him?!?

Who the hell cares if he gets claimed?

I'd be happy with a straight out release right now
Charlie Sheen Night at CoPa: everyone has their Tiger Blood and Coke is a free mixer.
so what you're saying is there's a chance
that if they put him on waivers someone would take him off our roster AND pay him instead of us? what’s the downside?
I have a feeling that DD is afraid to admit his mistake on this one. let me introduce you to the concept of a sunk cost, Dave…
by Mark in Chicago on Jul 29, 2011 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions
then they should have DFA'd him
DFA of Purcey would have bought them until after the trade deadline to make actual decision, to trade, release or outright. This move makes no sense even for DD and JL
Maybe this is DD's way of forcing Leyland to overcome his fear of using back of the bullpen guys in middle inning high leverage situations
Either that or DD is trying to get fired.

does this move bode well for any trade angles they may be pursuing? someone wanting to see schlereth in major league action before they take him? seems like a stretch i guess
Angels want a 3B
Aramis Ramirez is all the buzz
"i think it will be mostly feast the rest of the year,"
Lay off Purcey...
After all, he had to clean up after Ruffin’s mess yesterday. 0 on 0 out, 0-0 count. Chance should be ashamed for leaving the game and letting poor Purcey load the bases and go 2-0 without retiring a batter. He could have at least gotten a few batters out from the dugout before David came in.
Guillen says‚ "¿Que?"
Anyone else feel like
This is just a band aid over a gaping wound?
And Ruffin? Seriously?!? I know he got touched up, but he has shown much more promise in the own than purcey has. the decision on who to option should have been painfully simple. Ruffin can throw strikes; purcey can not. Am I missing something here?!?

Ugh
I must have done something truly awful in a past life to deserve the anguish this management is putting me through.

Sure seems like something appears to be happenng with Seattle
Gotta be Fister involved….would we give up Castellanos for him?
"i think it will be mostly feast the rest of the year,"
that feels like overpaying
Fister (Fister? I barely know her!) is a good back end guy to have, but he doesn’t command a top prospect unless your farm system is completely barren. Maybe a Drew Smyly type guy who has increased his value with a good performance lately, and has upside (and is not in the typical DD mold of a power pitcher).

This is one of those head scratching top 10 dumb moves of DD and JL and LM
10. Bringing in rookie Ruffin with bases jammed
9. Taking Porcello out preventing complete game shut out (would have been much higher if Valverde blew the game)
8. Naming Ryan Raburn starting Left Fielder before Spring Training
7. Optioning Ruffin / Recalling Sclereth the day after DAVID PURCEY nearly walked bases loaded again
6. Leaving XXX Pitcher in too long on ?? ?? ?? against ??? when the Bullpen was ready
5. Taking XXXX Pitcher out when he was pitching well against ? on ?.
4. Naming Ryan Raburn Starting Second Baseman after trading Sizemore for Purcey
3. Letting David Purcey walk 2 1/2 batters against Angels – Gurranteeing a LOSS
2. Letting David Purcey walk the bases loaded against White Sox – Gurranteeing a LOSS
1. Trading Scott Sizemore to Oakland for David Purcey
10. Honestly, he shouldn’t have been needed that inning after Below being squeezed, but who else do you bring in there? Most any other guy could have done the exact same thing. Not ideal for an MLB debut, but bringing in a fresh guy to replace a rookie at about 80 pitches to preserve a tie isn’t the worst idea in the world.
9. You act as if we lost this game. The Pirates took the first two, and Leyland wanted to lock this game down and escape with a 2-run win. Yes, Porcello pitched well enough to earn the CG shutout, and his stat sheet weeps. The W-L record isn’t weeping, that’s for sure.
8. Why wouldn’t you give him a chance? Dude was on fire in the second half last year, and he probably deserved the starting job. Sure, he’s never hit a lick in the first half, but you imagine he could figure it out one of these years. He didn’t, and his role as the starting left fielder was short lived. If I recall correctly, Boesch took 2 of the first 4 starts over Raburn anyways.
7. Sure. I’d like to cut Purcey too. And then DFA him.
6. There have been very few times that this has happened this season. I’d say there are far more times we’ve pulled the starter in favor of the bullpen and they let it slip away. Your question marks don’t make this any more convincing either.
5. Great, now we complain about taking people out after complaining about the exact opposite. Nobody’s perfect with these decisions. And I don’t feel like this has been a major problem either.
4. Whatever. At least they knew this was only a stopgap solution until Guillen was healthy. Who else were you going to stick at 2B? Not Rhymes, maybe Worth.
3/2. Yeah, Purcey sucks.
1. Because .220 hitting second basemen with below average fielding are so valuable. Our options at 2B and 3B are far better now, and while we got shit in return, it’s not like we lost much.

I'm a little late to this party...
But WTF?

Not my kind of party
I got no problem with this move.
In Toledo, Schlereth has a 0.77 ERA with 18 K’s and 5 BB in 11.2 innings. Maybe he’s figured it out.
