Game 107 Overflow #2 - Angels at Tigers
News: Baltimore’s Koji Uehara was traded to the Rangers in exchange for Chris Davis and Tommy Hunter
What happened since the last thread:
- Jacob Turner: 5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 6 Ks, 3 BBs. Solid debut for the kid.
- In Turner’s defense, one of his runs was due to Phil Coke’s attempts at replicating the genius of David Purcey. Coke has hit two batters and given up a double and a walk in 2/3 of an inning.
- Magglio Ordonez had an RBI single in the bottom of the 4th. The Angels came back with a run in the top of the 5th.

Drink, and Drink, and Drink, and Drink, and Drink, and Drink, and Fight!
i liked coke more before the season started
…but once the games started….
Was this a throw away game?!?
OMG! We’re facing Cy Fucking Young! No chance of winning this one. Let’s call up a kid who was in high school two years ago, then let Phil Coke hit batter after batter and throw watermelons across the plate, to smack around the park. Did I not hear Benoit was warming up? Then Sclereth, another lefty ,comes in? WTF?

Oh yeah
BTW….. Coke’s ERA against the angels is 8.00 something. Nice idea, Leyland!
by Phenomenal Bob on Jul 30, 2011 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Point is....
Trumbo Bourjos Mathis are all righty’s…..Leyland waited too long to pull Coke anyway, then brings in another lefty, so Schlereth was after the fact. Bottom line, Coke was out there too long, like Leyland didn’t care about the game and was letting him hang out to dry. His ERA against the Angels is terrible, anyway. Did this game mean nothing? I wanted Benoit to pitch in the 8th. Isn’t that why we pay him his millions? Oh…. I forgot…. we have to be AHEAD to let him pitch in the 8th. And heaven forbid he or Valverde have to pitch from the stretch with runners on! Gotta make it easy on them. Bring them in with NO ONE ON to get three outs. Should be the easiest gig in the majors.

Coke had a 2.79 ERA since being moved into the pen before today. So, he doesn’t deserve the whole Purcey/Thomas treatment quite yet.

Right,
and my simple contention was Boesch saw the liner caught, may have held up, then saw it pop out and started going again. It was a rocket and he wasn’t out of the box when he was initially caught. A pretty natural reaction on a liner, not a grounder.

Or try to win it while the majority of pieces are here? they're not asking Penny to be a Cy Young caliber pitcher
all they need from Penny is 6 or 7 innings every fifth day, and to keep them in games. Which for the most part he’s done
Turner could be as high as a #2, but I’d much rather keep him down instead of having another Andrew Miller

Not trying to be argumentative,
But I do enjoy swapping thoughts. I’ve never thought of Miller, or Oliver for that matter, as a big league pitcher. They just seem to be missing that edge….my thoughts on Penny are that he is simply a stop gap and while he has been adequate, there are a few guys I have felt have better potential and could be very similar now (Furbush, Below, Turner, Wilk, Weber, hell even Enrique)…I believe giving young guys a chance before commiting to veterans just because of experience

That works
I like baseball a ton more than college sports. My college sport participation is to occasionally glance at a score and that’s about it.

They suck too
but buckeyes fans are the most obnoxious, asshole, homer fans I’ve ever met. They know absolutely nothing about the sport they are rooting for and even less about the organization they claim to love. Ohio State and it’s fans are a joke.

Leyland was just called "Crusty" on National TV...
Love it.
Drink, and Drink, and Drink, and Drink, and Drink, and Drink, and Fight!
MISSED that - Damn
I call him Crusty because my brother named him crustacieon fave (not sure why)….but I liked it and then shortened it to crusty because of how shitty he always is on post game interviews.
So...
What was the logic in bringing Turner out for the 6th when he was clearly at his pitch count, had done extremely well, and it was still 1-1?
I swear to Christ, Leyland is the most overrated manager since LaRussa.
I'll let you and Tigerdog have at it

he put him out there to try and get the win
he pulled him after he let someone on base.
What should have Leyland done?

I agree
they way turner was handled was done perfectly.
Charlie Sheen Night at CoPa: everyone has their Tiger Blood and Coke is a free mixer.
He was not at any pitch count limit
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
He's 20 years old
If he isn’t on a pitch count limit, then that’s another mistake.
Turner had gone five strong innings. He had given up one run. Leyland needed to turn the game over to the bullpen right then and there.
His terrible management of all things pitching bit us in the ass again.
so he shouldn't have taken him out, or he should have?
"I'm a simple man. I like pretty, dark-haired women and breakfast food" - Ron Swanson
Turner needed to come out after 5
There’s really no excuse for it beyond “Leyland wanted to get the kid a win”. Well, I’d rather worry about the team getting a win.
I really don't see why you think Leyland is at fault
Turner pitched to one guy in the 6th. The bullpen that you are advocating Leyland go to, were the ones that shat all over the field

I'm confused as well...

It sounds like he's mostly upset that Turner got the loss?
Because I think Coke would’ve started that inning if Turner didn’t anyways.

It's a momentum thing
You take Turner out after 5. He did his job, getting through 5 innings with only one run. He was at the end of his pitch count and wasn’t going to get through the sixth inning. Because of that, you turn things over to the bullpen between innings.
Instead, Leyland throws Turner out for the sixth. He gives up a baserunner and gets pulled. Now the bullpen is scrambling, when they could have started with a clean inning. I mean, little league managers understand this.
GAH! :)
I'm sure he is, but he hadn't reached it
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!

go KC and go BoSox

Go Oakland, also.
