Jered Weaver should be suspended

Jered Weaver should be suspended, for at least 2 starts if not more, as should any pitcher who throws at someone's head.

Star-divide

With what we now know about head injuries and concussions there is no situation where it should be even remotely acceptable to throw at someone's head. Tossing the player is simply not acceptable any more, the player and the team need to suffer real consequences to make them learn. I know he didn't get hit but look at what happened to Justin Morneau after he got concussed. David wright had to go on the disabled list because he got hit. It can cost a player too much, it is simply not acceptable and there need to be real consequences.

Y'know, I'd be fine with this.

I went back and saw the highlights… sure, Guillen showboated a little, but then both benches were very clearly warned, and what does Weaver do on the very next pitch? He doesn’t throw at Avila’s backside, like Gibson and Drysdale would’ve. He throws at Avila’s damn head. His head! Bush-league, if you ask me — and dangerous to boot. Can his ass for a few days, I say.

Seriously!!!!!?????? Guillen showboated a little??

Don’t get me wrong. I loved every last second of the “Los” show and that whiny little bitch Weaver certainly had it coming but to say Guillen showboated a little would be like saying the Grand Canyon is a little hole in the ground! Short of cart-wheeling his way down the first base line I’m not sure there was anything else Carlos could have done to show Weaver up! Long live (and stay healthy) the King, Carlos in now My Tiger.

They don't suspend pitchers a number of "starts"

A common one is the five day job, where they really don’t miss any time. This act was flagrant enough to draw a suspension. I still think it’s funny that los Carlos got him all wound up. Good to have Carlos back!

I understand they don't suspend players for starts

But something like a 1 or 2 game suspension would be meaningless since he couldn’t play anyways.

I think they often do

Didn’t Bonderman get 5 or 6 games for an incident in late 2009?

You know I'm right about this.

Exactly. And that's the problem with handing out that slap on the wrist.

If they were serious about ending the practice of beaning, he’d get fifteen games.

When it comes to

starting pitchers who only work once every five games, they should be suspended on a per start basis. Suspending them from playing on days where they would not be playing anyway is at best and utter joke.

And as the author mentioned, the sports world is by now most aware of the dangers of head trauma and anyone throwing a ball towards the head on purpose needs not only a hefty suspension (at least two starts) but also a hefty fine to go with it.

The problem with starts

is that it is somewhat loosely defined, short rest and all that. It needs to be ggames, or be strictly defined as 5 games=1 start. Really just nitpicking, I fully agree the suspension is warranted.

The time for reckoning has come, and we already have the answer

by Vreeland2 on Aug 1, 2011 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay, so he gets suspended for six games, and now he has appealed

At the worst (for him) one start will be pushed back a day or two. It’s not even a slap on the wrist.
