Bless You Boys Podcast 14: Anytime Leyland bunts, throw your shot glass at the television
I'm back from my Florida vacation, which means the Bless You Boys Podcast has higher production qualities...though the low brow content remains the same!
This week the podcast runs 1:24 and features editors Al Beaton, Kurt Mensching, and Allison Hagen. Joining us is very special guest Grey of Fire Gerald Laird. Grey is better known on Twitter as @spacemnkymafia and as NefiPerezHilton in the BYB comments.
Topics covered this week included:
- Al Alburquerque struck in the head by a line drive during batting practice.
- Contract extensions for everyone!
- Dave Dombrowski gets four years, Jim Leyland one year, by request. Were the extensions deserved?
- Tigers lose 2 of 3 against the douchebag Indians, still lead the Central by three games.
- The time to bench Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen is nigh.
- Casper Wells, anyone?
- Milestone 1 - Jose Valverde sets club record of 33 consecutive saves.
- Milestone 2 – Justin Verlander wins 100th career game.
- Why isn't Wilson Betemit playing more?
- Will Brandon Inge return before September in order to make him playoff eligible?
- With Victor Martinez injured, should a backup catcher be called up?
- Where's the power?
- Can you seriously say a team or player "lacks heart?"
- The return of listener questions!
We LOVE to hear from you.If you would like to have your question on next week's podcast, please email us at BYBPodcast at Gmail.com.
Final thoughts: Mostly about drinking, panicking and John Smoltz.

Correct me if I'm wrong
But isn’t Inge already playoff-eligible, since he’s already logged time on the 25 man roster?

Playoff Eligibility
Rule 40 (A) To be eligible for a team’s playoff roster a player must be on any of the following: (a) the 25 man active roster, (b) the disabled list, © the bereavement list or military inactive list, or (d) the suspended list as of August 31 at midnight.
The exception is that a player on the 60-day disabled list may be replaced by another player from within the organization who plays the same position (i.e. position player for position player, or pitcher for pitcher), with the approval of the commissioner’s office. This exception gives a club a few wild card spots to play with.
The Tigers currently have two players, both pitchers, on the 60 day DL. Brad Thomas and Joel Zumaya. Inge is not automatically eligible because he was on the team earlier in the season. Don’t be surprised if we see more players being called up and put on the DL before this month is out. #rostergames
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Thanks
Sometime the minutia of roster rules is confusing.

This one is particularly confusing, because there are conflicting reports on what the actual rules are
one version says that a player has to be on the 60 day DL before being replaced, but others say it has to be the DL (which is true, but the former version has the most traction with credible sources).
another version says that the replacement player has to be on the 40 man roster as of 8/31, while another version just says he has to be in the organization. This would impact Inge, who is not on the 40 man as of now.
minutae, indeed.

Presumably Dombrowski was extended because he understands the roster rules.
Unlikely that a replacement GM would be able to get up to speed in under 10 months.
Any replacement would understand the rules
whether he knows the personnel in the Tiger organization, both on the field and in the front office, is the question. DD knows the rules as well as anyone, and he covers all the bases as good as any. It’s just a matter of the judgment calls that are made with the personnel that they have, and when to fill holes or go with what they’ve got.

Regarding yesterday's assignment
“Not the White Sox” is really your best case for cheering on the Tigers?
Except for Kurt, I’m sending a note home to all your parents.
I would have said
That it was for the Twins’ fans own good. Expanding one’s mind and learning new things is a possible key to staving off dementia until later in life, and what could be more new and different of an experience than Twins fans cheering on a team that could actually, oh I don’t know, NOT FOLD IN THE PLAYOFFS LIKE A CHEAP CRAPPY LAWN CHAIR AND GET SWEPT BY THE FIRST TEAM THEY RUN INTO? For the love of the baseball gods, at least provide them more resistance than a speed bump, you pathetic losers! #bitter #maybejustalittlebit

Honest, I'm completely harmless. I make up in ALL CAPS and creative threats what I lack in actual violence.

I don't want them. They'll just jinx the Tigers!

I hope the Twins fans do root for the Sox
It will be like losing twice this year for them.
You know I'm right about this.

Inges Ass
Not only should he not be brought up before Sept. he shouldn’t be brought up at all. Betemet should be the every day 3rd baseman, and Rabum should join Inge in Toledo. This guy is in no way a major league player. The way Sherzer is pitching maybe Leyland will move Rabum into the rotation.
Funny how dumb comments have a way of coming back to make you look bad
