While we didn't know it at the time, this past Sunday's game against the Orioles may have been the end of an era, as it was probably the last time Magglio Ordóñez took the field as an everyday starter for the Tigers. With everything else going on with this lineup and in the midst of a nail-biting pennant race, we can't let that milestone go unrecognized. As far as we know, Maggs will stay with the team as a bench player for the rest of the season, but he's on a one-year contract and it's unlikely that DD will resign the 37-year-old, 15-year veteran to that role for next year. Magglio was a big part of the resurgence of the Tigers from the fetid depths of the Randy Smith era, and generations of fans will forever remember his 2006 ALCS home run. Even if we're being brutally honest about his current capabilities and agree that he shouldn't be patrolling Comerica Park's right field any more, we can still remember and appreciate what he's meant to this team. (Many thanks to the awesome Samara Pearlstein of Roar of the Tigers for permission to use her artwork in this post.)
