Brandon Inge called up, Andy Dirks optioned
Tigers announced after the game they have purchased the contract of Brandon Inge -- that is, added him to the 40-man roster -- to call him up to the Tigers, and that they optioned the contract of Andy Dirks to Toledo. I guess they feel like they have enough outfielders for the next 12 days or so, and that they need more Inge at third base.

understandable though
With Boesch, Jackson, and Young, he wouldn’t get much playing time. At least he will get a chance to play and not get rusty in Toledo.

Inge could possibly catch if needed.

According to Leyland
We’re facing a lot of lefties which eliminates the need for Dirks. He’s guaranteed to be back by September 1st though.
Is Dirks not able to be on the playoff roster now?
Because that would STINK! Inge isn’t better than Betemit! Dirks needs to stay!
there's a few ways for him to still make the playoff roster
although most of them involve magglio ordonez’s health.

Time to do a confidence poll
This is an all time high. We win one game and now people are worried about the play-off roster.

Playoff eligibility needs to be set by the end of August
So it’s actually a legit concern.

I say were still at 75ish
Losing the Twins series hurts.
Dumb move
IMO
God ain't got no use for a 180 lb bag of sugar.
Not saying...
…Were a lock, but were in first with 35 games to go. We are thr best team in the AL Central too. If any postion guy needs to get left off it’s Don Kelly. Inge can make it but Dirks should too.
my guess
Is that Kelly can substitute for both infielders and outfielders, as can Raburn, but Dirks is purely an outfielder. He has less versatility.

I know
I was being sarcastic with my post also. I’ll feel sorry for Dirks if he isn’t on the play-off roster. I just don’t think he’ll be starting in any play-off games anyway. DY, Boesch, and AJax are going to be starting every game.
by Keith-Allen on Aug 19, 2011 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Really?
A decent option to start for Jackson in a game or two, espacially with Leyalnd’s gut.
I think AJax has proven himself
His defense can’t be replaced by anyone.

This move makes a lot of sense too
A lefty righty platoon at 3B is the way to go. If it’s not Raburn at 3b, then Inge is the next best guy for that role. We really need Raburn at 2B, not 3b.
Since I don't get
playoff roster rules. If the guy is on the DL, he’s still eligible to make the playoff roster right? And could a guy like Rhymes since he’s on the 40 man roster?
I get this move
Bat Inge against lefties because he was going at a .335 clip against them and it was the negative BA against righties that tanked his overall average. Wait…..he’s under .200 against both? Are we really hurting that much for defense at 3rd?

It is a good thing Avila is young...
What is it going to take to get a C up here so he can have a day or two off?
Bring someone up for 4-5 days, then send them back if you want, but give the guy a break. VMart is still limping around, can’t see him catching anytime soon.
It would take a catcher worth a damn.
We’re fresh out of those.

Avila had yesterday off
As of matter of fact, we’ve had 2 days off in the past 12 days. So it’s not like he’s been playing a lot more than normal.
Here’s a look at his workload month to month-
April : 22 Games , 83 Plate appearances
May : 21 Games, 82 PA’s
June : 23 Games, 93 PA’s
July : 23 Games, 87 PA’s
August : 15 Games, 63 PA’s
and there are 12 more games to play until August 31st.
So he is on pace for 100 - 110 PA's...
and 27 games. That is a lot of crouching. All I was suggesting was to bring a body up for 1-2 starts, then send them back down, and then back up again after the 1st.
Instead they sent down a contributing OF in Dirks in exchange for another 3B, which brings the grand total of guys on the roster who can play 3B to 5!!!! Kelly, Raburn, Betemit, Inge, and Peralta. Meanwhile we have 1 useable catcher on the roster.
Seems like a colossal waste of roster space.
If you're counting Kelly at 3B
then you ought to count him at catcher, as well. I see what you’re saying and I’m sorry to see Dirks go, but if they really want to give Avila a day off, Kelly would be just as good an option for a “body” behind the plate as Santos or St. Pierre

Kelly is just an emergency option...
Not a guy I’d really want for 9 innings running out there. At least the minor league guys can call a game and manage the running game. You are almost assured of 3 outs from the 9 hole having them in there though, but a small trade off for a fresher Avila in Sept and hopefully Oct.
As for the 3B, they have all started and played there in the majors. Granted, Raburn should never be allowed to play there ever again.
Plus, catching is a whole other animal when it comes to defense.
Did someone come off the 40-man roster to make room for Inge?
If so, who and what will become of him?

I don't think we ever took Inge off the 40 man roster
I think we’re at 39 players anyway, even with Inge.
Inge was taken off the 40 man roster
He was Designated for assignment, cleared waivers, and outrighted to Toledo.
He can be added back to the 40 man roster because there is a vacancy, but he could not have been sent down without clearing waivers.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Thanks for correcting me
When I looked, Inge was already added to the 40 man roster at MLB.com. That’s why I thought what I did. We must of had only 38 players on the 40 man roster before adding Inge.
Here is my take on this move
- I don’t mind Inge being recalled, for the sole reason that the Tigers lack any third baseman that can play at least league average defense. Inge is about that good recently, but no better. Watching Betemit and (gulp) Raburn butcher the position gives us a perspective on Inge’s declining, yet still average defense at the hot corner.
- However, a few weeks against minor league competition do not nearly begin to atone for years of futility, where we have a manager that has conclusively proven himself incompetent in the case of dealing with Brandon Inge in the lineup.
- Andy Dirks is a useful player on the Tigers. He should not be sent down to the minor leagues. At some point before the playoffs, the Tigers should be sending a reliever down to the minors and calling up a position player. Unless, of course, Leyland plans on pitching five starters in the playoffs because he’s concerned about Verlander’s work load. Now would be a good time to send Schlereth down, rather than Dirks.
- The bottom line is, that frankly, I don’t trust Jim Leyland. He doesn’t have the nads nor the brains to sit Brandon Inge down for the simple reason that he sucks and can’t hit a baseball consistently enough to justify his presence on a major league roster. Leyland has proven this point conclusively over several years.
- Given that Inge is now up, hopefully this is the end of the historically stupid experiment of putting Ryan Raburn at third base. In fact, William Betemit would be a better option, though not a good nor even an acceptable option at second base. But then, any random player off the bench, or pitcher out of the bullpen could hardly be worse defensively than Raburn at second base.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Agree with you on most points. There are still a few weeks before august 31st so a lot can happen, but if dombrowski thinks this 25 gives him best potential playoff roster he’s mistaken. In fact I’d expect a few moves on the 31st to create flexibilty. Dirks comes back up and Perry or Schlereth go down. I don’t see either pitcher getting into a playoff game, and Dirks is a very valuable playoff player (at least to tigers) because of speed and defense.
I do – though – think leyland does have the nads to sit Inge down if Inge proves to still suck. Leyland’s done it once and is doing it to Maggs now.
I’m betting the playoff roster also includes Guillen. Maybe to replace Kelly who isn’t as useful in short series as in full season. This way leyland has legitimate bench bats in guillen and Maggs plus enough defensive replacements in Inge, Santiago and Dirks.

Betemit should start most games
Since Wilson Betemit was acquired from the Royals, the Tigers are 12-4 in games he has started, 2-8 in the games he didn’t start. (from Pat Caputo).
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
as you know that's not a stat that tells you a whole lot
but I agree betemit should get most starts

True
There should also be a significant difference defensively between Betemit and Inge. I never realized that WB was this poor in the field. Almost makes one appreciate the Brandbino. No doubt, he’ll be a defensive replacement in most games when the Tigers have a lead, as well as starting against LHP’s.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Dirks and Kelly are a bit redundant
And I really mean, “a bit”. Both are lefty bats, seem like decent baserunners and decent defenders. If we’re just talking about a lefthanded bat for the OF or a defensive replacement, Kelly can do just about as well as Dirks.
That being said, Dirks is probably a more capable sub in CF and has more pop in the bat. Kelly is a little more versatile.
I think this move probably came down to the options game. If Kelly had an option left, he might be the one wearing a ’Hens uni right now.
