Series Preview Part 1: Tigers at Rays

Detroit Tigers (68-58) at Tampa Bay Rays (69-56)

Probable Pitchers:
Monday August 22, 7:10p:
RHP Justin Verlander (18-5, 2.31, 204 K, 42 BB)
Hitter to Fear: B.J. Upton (8 for 15, 2 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI)
Hitter to Fail: Ben Zobrist (2 for 21, 6 K)

at

RHP Jeff Neimann (8-4, 3.29, 78 K, 23 BB)
Hitter to Fear: Jhonny Peralta (4 for 7, 1 3B, 1 RBI)
Hitter to Fail: Victor Martinez (1 for 6, 1 K)

Tuesday August 23, 7:10p:
RHP Brad Penny (8-9, 4.97, 58 K, 47 BB)
Hitter to Fear: Casey Kotchman (2 for 6, 1 2B)
Hitter to Fail: Johnny Damon (0 for 6, 2 K)

at

LHP David Price (11-10, 3.59, 164 K, 43 BB)
Hitter to Fear: Victor Martinez (7 for 14, 1 2B, 3 HR, 5 RBI)
Hitter to Fail: Miguel Cabrera (0 for 9, 5 K)

What to Watch For:
1. Tigers won't miss Price - With this being a 4-game series, the Tigers had little chance of missing Rays ace David Price. Though his wins and losses haven't lined up, he is 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA in his last 3 starts. He has also been pretty impressive against Detroit in his career, 3-0 with a 2.11 ERA and 25 strikeouts.

2. V-Mart and Peralta still on fire - The bats have yet to cool off for Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez and shortstop Jhonny Peralta. V-Mart is hitting .342 in his previous 10 games while Peralta is hitting .324. Jhonny is, however, 0 for 9 with 3 strikeouts against Tuesday night's starter David Price.

On Deck:
Tigers continue the Rays 4-game series on Wednesday and Thursday. Part 2 will publish Wednesday afternoon.

I'd be happy with a split in this series.

I'd do cartwheels.

Got a bad feeling about this one.

To get a split Verlander will have to bring his usual A game

match up in game 2 doesn’t bode well for the Tigers…so if JV can do his thing then they’d just need a split of Scherzer-Davis and Fister-Hellickson…the former seems more likely than the latter. I do think they can split them though.

That rug really tied the room together.

by Motown514 on Aug 22, 2011 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

I think they can take 3 of 4

I like the matchup tonight(freaking duh, right) but scherezer and foster are both looking like they are in an upswing. Max especially so. Seems like after his five run inning two starts ago, he’s really kicked it up a notch.

I'm going to take this opportunity to ask a question I have always wanted an answer to

Who or what decides whether a game starts at 7:05 or 7:10? For what reason does this happen?

by Trysdor on Aug 22, 2011 3:35 PM EDT reply actions

I think the home team does.

Don’t like all of the Blue Jays night games start at 7:07 or something wacky like that?

Yes

White Sox start games at 7:11pm because of a deal with the chain 7/11.

Bahahaha

That’s really quite amusing.

Totally within the discretion of the home club.

They can have the games at night or in the day, if they like.

Good question!

A lot of different reasons. Mostly for the local television broadcast to setup the game and time for national anthem and such. Also, in advertising, the first commercials before first pitch is the most seen. That is the top dollar commericial slot.

This series is really, on paper, the toughest one left on the 2011 schedule.

Though certainly not the most important.

according to all the posts last week

wasn’t the previous series with CLEV the most important?

by TigerTom on Aug 22, 2011 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

YTD, yes it was

and more important than the Rays series too, but the Rays series is tougher, IMO.

Just in terms of pitching matchups, the only one that looks bad is Game 2.

I have a pretty good feeling about this series. Game 4 probably leans Tampa’s way, but a split would still be quite nice.

Game 2

Is basically a throw away game. Pretty much our worst Starting pitcher against their best. Verlander will help us win game 1 whether it be a W or ND for him. Probably going to get smoked in game 2. I’m thinking we’ll split the series.

Go Lions, Red Wings, Tigers, Pistons and Sparty

I'm not sure anyone can predict what JL will do with his lineups...

but I would suspect that JL will look to sit a bunch of his regulars on the Tuesday game. I suspect Raburn, Kelly, Santiago, et al will start the game.

Tonight’s opponent is Tampa Bay
For the Tigers Verlander is going today
A good chance to continue on their winning way

Now that I have had my say
I bid you all a very good-day

Penny v Price?

May as well leave Penny in for 9 innings, regardless of the score. I just don’t see us pulling that one off.

Also… the Trop is a horrible, horrible place for baseball. Being that Comerica is a gorgeous gem of a ballpark, it has to take its toll on our players, both mentally and physically. Plus, *&#$ artificial turf.

by H2OPoloPunk on Aug 22, 2011 5:29 PM EDT reply actions

The turf is why I'm glad Rick isn't taking the mound

You know that penny is going to be ground balled to death so I’m glad we should only see that once

I don't even consider it a baseball park

It’s more like going to a theater where they are imitating baseball.

Yeah I know

but considering its an afternoon game and its gonna be off the Florida coast by then, could have major impacts on them trying to get out after Thursdays game

It's the last time for those 2 to meet, I'm sure they'll get it in.

Now if you’re worried about Upton hitting one so hard off Penny on Tuesday that he punctures the roof, I could understand completely.

what about Damon or Longoria?

No way Damon can hit it that far. Besides:

As a Floridian with a close eye on the matter

I see this brushing up the east coast of Florida. Hurricanes don’t usually start in the Atlantic and cross over in August. September is when the Gulf becomes VERY active (shallow waters + summer sun = mucho positive thermal inertia).

You sure?

My mother-in-law has a condo on Sanibel and I would have sworn that one 5 years or so ago was in miod-August.
