Game 129 Overflow - Tigers at Rays
This song is stuck in my head right now, so it can be stuck in yours too.
What happened so far:
- The Tigers scored first on a Austin Jackson sacrifice fly in the top of the 3rd inning.
- The Rays scored twice in the bottom of the 4th. Evan Longoria hit a solo home run and then Johnny Damon hit an RBI double.
- Alex Avila tied the score in the 7th inning with a home run that might be mistaken for a NASA launch later tonight by CNN.
- Max Scherzer: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 2 BB on 97 pitches.
- Daniel Schlereth and Ryan Perry have pitched a combined three scoreless innings so far.
- Awesome food in Ann Arbor
- Awesome Grand Haven
- Awesome new blogs
- Awesome Alex Avila and Justin Verlander
- Not-so-awesome Corey Perry

"It's my first big league win and you can't beat that. I'm kind of elated to tell you the truth. I wanted to continue the streak of our starting pitchers. That's 5-for-5 right there." Justin Verlander
False
Take no chances that the runner scores at home before the tag. Take a force out.
Doesn't matter
If the runner is forced it doesn’t matter if he is tagged or forced out at the base, the run would not count.

You sure?
I know you can score if that runner gets into a pickle. Why would it be any different.
by playoffbeard on Aug 24, 2011 10:39 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
False.
If a runner is tagged out to end an inning and the runner going home crosses the plate before the tag, the run counts.
If he gets in a rundown why
not just run to the bag for a force?
by keepitcomplicated on Aug 24, 2011 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions
A rundown has nothing to do with it
If the guy going home touches home plate before a runner is TAGGED out, the run counts. In that situation with the game on the line, you take a force out.
No. That's seriously wrong.
If the runner is forced to a base, it’s considered a force-out regardless of whether you touch the bag or tag the runner. Keepitcomplicated is right — the runner could always turn around, but he’s still forced to third. He could go wait on second for an hour, but it doesn’t matter, he’s still forced to third base.
by The Birchman on Aug 24, 2011 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Are you disagreeing with me?
I never said anything about a rundown. The original comment said tag the runner on his way to third. That’s too risky a play with the game on the line, that’s all. I’m saying you take a FORCE out over tagging the runner on the way to 3rd.
Yes I am.
Like I said, tagging him IS a force out. Whether you step on the bag or tag the runner, when the runner is forced to a base it’s a force out and the run won’t count.
by The Birchman on Aug 24, 2011 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions

You are right in this situation with the bases loaded. In my frustration I was looking for an e-argument. This is epic comprehension fail on my part.

bases loaded
sharp ground ball to Inge, he then throws a soft toss to Ramon at 2b, except that Ramon was not at the bag and couldn’t beat the runner the second. meanwhile, all Inge had to do was take 5 steps to his right to get the force at 3rd, or easily throw to 1st. runner was nowhere close to beating out the throw to 1st. runner also not close to beating Inge to the bag at 3rd.
Routine ground ball to Inge
He could went to any base to get the out. I think the Ump just wanted to get the game over with.

When a runner isn’t being held on first base he almost always has a big enough lead to make it to second, particularly with two outs since he gets to go on contact right away.

The better question is:
When was the last time ANYONE beat out a hard ground ball to third that was fielded cleanly? If you have to LOB a ball to second base when a runner isn’t being held on, it’s probably not the smartest play. Inge had time to double-clutch on the throw to second, stop, turn, and fire to first and still get the out.

Again no its not
The bases were loaded. He had a better play at home than he did at second.
The fact that you make this crazy blanket statement that going to second is the best play “every time” proves you don’t know what you’re talking about.
you don't go home in that position if you have two outs ever

And you don't go to second
When the fist baseman isn’t holding the damn runner on. He had a huge lead and Santiago wasn’t playing by the bag because he was playing to prevent a hit through the infield. Inge needed to recognize that. He failed to do so. Simple as that.
Going to 2nd is the appropriate play almost every time.

It's the shorter throw...
But not the better play, necessarily. First is the better play when you’re not holding the runner on. In bases loaded situations, the BEST play is stepping on third or flipping it to first.

Glad the game is over anyway
Just wish the Rays earned it.
I think Santiago beat him by a nanosecond
Either way that was stupid on all parts.

Inge and Santiago are both at fault.
Below made a pitch that should have gotten us out of the inning.

Can't wait to hear Jim explain this one -
Wish there was a way I could blame him

Why pitch "around" Sean Rodriguez?
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Or why hit the guy before him

No idea what you're talking about
When I got back from making dinner, there was one out and a runner at first and then Below struck someone out right after I got back

Inge bobbled a ball that would have been a double play
But resulted in a FC and only one putout.
I hate Jonathon Ericsson.
Hitting the guy wasn't strategy, just a bad pitch
but they were very careful with Rodriguez, not the world’s greatest hitter

the big reason it's inge's fault and why you don't go to second
the bases were loaded, therefore there was no one holding at first (presumably) giving the slow footed kotchman a chance to get a big secondary lead and beat out even a sharply hit ball. plus with two outs there was no reason for santiago to be that close to second
Shoot, it's over?
Spent the past however-long watching the radar to see if we’re gonna get our ass kicked with storms. (We’re alright, but Windsor’s not going to fare very well.)
if the ball is hit to the left side
santiago should have been breaking to the bag immediately. no reason for him not to be there. inge made the routine play and santiago failed him.
Not really Santiago's fault.
It’s not like he wasn’t there to RECEIVE the throw, he was there in time. The problem is the throw didn’t beat the runner.
