Carlos Guillen to begin rehab with Mud Hens
Via John Wagner's Toledo Blade Hens Blog:
Tigers IF Carlos Guillen will be with the Mud Hens the next few days. Guillen went on Detroit's disabled list Aug. 14 with a sore left wrist. He will work out with the Mud Hens today and tomorrow, then begin a rehab assignment Monday. He is here today but did not take regular batting practice.
Seems like I've heard this before...several times before.

Am I a bad Tiger fan
If I forgot that Carlos even existed? :-/
Random nonsense at @Baroque97
Honest, I'm completely harmless. I make up in ALL CAPS and creative threats what I lack in actual violence.

Very curious about the timing of this
Playoff rosters set on August 31. Guillen eligible on August 29. Hmmmm….
I wouldn’t include him. He’s too fragile and didn’t do much while he was “healthy”. Time to move on. Give him his time in September to say goodbye.

He could be activated from the DL at any time and still go on the playoff roster.

I think Carlos would be a good player to have in the World Series
When Verlander is not pitching, you have to figure we’ll be into our bullpen early in a few of the games. That’s when we’ll need to use pinch hitters, double switches, and whatnot. I’d rather carry a few more bats like a Guillen and Dirks, than carry a 5th starter (Penny), and back of the bullpen reliever (Below, Pauly, Perry, or Schlereth).
The bullpen: have to figure on having Al Alburquerque back also. Other than Coke, Valverde, Benoit, and Al Al, I don’t have a preference on who else we carry on the play-off roster.
Over The Life of His Current Contract
does anyone know what Carlos’ cost per WAR is?
I'm guessing we don't want to
Some research is best left undone.

Yeah, I think it was too late for both of us by the time momo made his valid point :)

He Has Made $48 Million Over The Last Four Seasons Including 2011
He has a total WAR of 3.8 over that time.
That comes to $12.6 million per WAR.
Amazing, simply friggin amazing and the sports world talks about bad NBA contracts.
Fangraphs WAR
shows 1.9 WAR from 2008- 2011 HERE

Okay So What Is The Difference
in how the two sites compute WAR?
Good question
Baseball Reference gives weight in WAR calculations more on offensive stats for position players, and less for defense, and on results (sustainable or not) for pitchers (and less on results-predictors).
Fangraphs seem to weight WAR more on defensive stats than Baseball Reference, and to reward pitchers more for peripherals and predictors than for actual runs allowed.
Fangraphs offers an explanation (sort of) HERE

Is This A Good Link
for understanding WAR calculations?
If you’re someone who wants to know what the heck WAR is, how it’s calculated, and why you’d use it, check out these two primers by BtB reader Jabberwocky. I highly recommend them. Heck, I know what WAR is and I found these articles quite interesting and informative.

Do you have a preference?
Is one seen as “better” than the other in the world of baseball statistics, or are they just different?
Don't forget his 1st 4 years here from 2004-07
He only got $16.5 and had a total WAR of 17.4.
For those 4 years he was worth $61.5 Million WAR Dollars, while giving us a surplus value of $45 Million. That’s why he earned his current contract.

Yes and No
The decision to offer a contract has to be measured at the time the decision was made. To say that los Carlos “earned” his future money based on past performance is to justify the decision regardless of what he does after getting the contract. If a GM is just going to assume that the player is going to continue performance at recent levels over the duration of a new contract, then he’s going to get himself into trouble.
Carlos was extended as an All Star shortstop with an .800 plus OPS. The moment he was moved out of that position, his value plummeted. He was moved a year later, after racking up more errors, mainly of the absent minded variety than anything, than any other SS in the league. DD decided to trade Jurrjens and Gorkys for Renteria, thinking that Edgar was that much better at SS than Carlos. (Ahem!). The model that was kicked around in the press before Carlos was extended was Miguel Tejada, who had signed a six year deal with Baltimore for megabucks. By comparison, the Tigers felt they got a bargain with Carlos. IN hindsight, it wasn’t a deal at all.

All contracts are based on past performance
If Peralta repeats this next year, what do you think Dombrowski should do? Let Peralta walk or give him a deal that is about market value? It’s about the same Catch 22 as it was with Guillen. If you let him walk, you have a big hole to fill. If you resign him to a big multi-year contract, you just make sure that if it fails the deal doesn’t hamstring you. It’s better to make a bunch of little mistakes, than one big mistake. A $40-50M /4 year deal, isn’t going bury us like a Joe Mauer type $184M / 8 year deal would.
Not quite
Contracts are based on expected future performance, as well as market conditions. The expectation was that Carlos would remain a healthy, starting shortstop for four seasons. He was neither healthy nor a shortstop. Jhonny will have to be played by ear. If he’s having a fine season next year, I’d try to do a short extension, and he will cost more money. I would not give him four years, though. The Tigers have two huge deals for JV and Cabrera. I don’t expect any more of those.

What are the odds.....
that DD and JL will actually leave Carlos off the playoff roster if he’s not on the DL?
Or Inge? Or Magglio?
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
That depends
Are the playoffs a reward for past performance and loyalty? Perhaps we should try to win, since we dont get in very often. Dirks, Rhymes/ Worth, and Santos are more likely to be productive this fall than this trio of past heroes. I like all three of the veterans, but we need to move ahead when we have the chance.
I'd guess the chances of seeing Santos get a spot are somewhere between 0 and 1%
No reason to carry a 3rd string catcher. Avila won’t get games off in the playoffs. They have enough of those built in. I’m guessing VMart could probably catch a game by then if needed in an emergency.

Santos won't be on the playoff roster.
He’ll get a call up for September, but that’s about it.
Carlos could do anything between being the primary starting 2B, to keeping Magglio company on the bench. I’d rather have him, or anyone else, at 2B than Raburn, but I’d rather have Rhymes, Santiago, or Worth at 2B than Guillen.
Time to give these guys the gold watch, a pat on the back, a big ceremony, the corvette, and a ride back home up Woodward to Birmingham where they can watch the playoffs on a brand new 99 inch HDTV. They’re not much use to the team any more.

We can use him in September

Player Replacements During Playoff For Injured Player
I was doing some research on I believe Rule #40. Is Rule #40 still the controlling rule for replacing a player injured during the playoffs?
Replacing a playoff roster player due to injury during the playoffs seems a bit complicated to me.
Can anyone simplify it in one or two sentences?
Maybe
Under the new rule, when a player is injured during post season play, his club may replace him at any time with another playoff eligible player. To be eligible for the post season roster, a player must have been in the organization before midnight on August 31st.
The new rule actually allows for changing the roster during a series, whereas the old rule only allowed roster changes between series. There is conflicting information out there on the internet regarding the nuances of who is eligible to be added, and what DL the player has to be on to be replaced. Apparently, Zoomer being on the 60 day DL would allow the Tigers to add a player to the playoff roster that wasn’t on the 25 man roster by 8/31, but that player has to be a pitcher. What’s locked in by 8/31 is the number of position players and pitchers on the 25 man playoff roster, because of how the replacements work.

What's the Tiger's record since he went on the DL?
I can't believe I ate the whole thing!
