Game 112 Overflow - Tigers at Royals
What happened so far:
- Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch led off the game with back-to-back triples, putting the Tigers up 1-0. Magglio Ordonez knocked Boesch in with a sacrifice fly.
- Alex Avila added another run with a solo homer to deep center field in the 5th inning. That is his 3rd home run in his last three games.
- Rick Porcello = filthy. 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 K, 0 BB. 57 pitches. To quote one of the great young minds of our generation:
Rick improved substantially in the 2nd half of both the 2009 and 2010 seasons, and I don't think it's any coincidence that he's pointing towards the same trend in 2011.

So I found a couple fun stats on ESPN today
The philles have more wins than the giants have home run and the least surprising one but funny is that Dunn has more K’s than hits.
If the guy can't get around on a fastball, he's toast.
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
And he looks like a Dr. Seuss character with that button nose
I don't care what the Chinese say, 2011 is the Year of the Tiger!
Its a vaild question
His bat speed was worrying people last year and it seems to have really gotten worse this year. I think he might be a .240 15-20 homer guy
I wouldn't be surprised if that was true in every season of Dunn's career.
He’s never really been a “put the ball in play” type.
Just looked it up.
He has never had more hits than Ks in a season.
This year, however, he almost has three times as many strikeouts.
38 hits to 60 k's

the only player Dombrowski has declared off-limits to being traded
in fact, Dave has said it makes him physically ill to field phone calls asking about him:
Miguel Cabrera.
Dombrowski has also stated that a team like the Tigers can only afford 1 $20 mil (or whatever the rate is that season) player.
JV jumps from about $12 mil to $20 mil next season,.
the deciding factor could well be Jacob Turner
if Turner turns out to be “all that” then JV likely becomes tradeable—esp for the right pieces coming back in return.

considering it took Verlander
A few years to really show what he could do. Turner would take a while, too, and for the first few years he would be relatively inexpensive. You don’t disassemble a good starting staff, you build on it.

Agreed, except if there's a buyer desperate
to overpay for an ace starter. Brian Cashman could well be that guy.
At some point, the collection of players coming back for JV > keeping JV.
that said, I’m not sure how much Cano saves you. Maybe he signs a new deal for $15 mil per season. But if 2B is a hole the Tigers need to fill, and they get the under team control Gardner for LF as well as some catching and pitching talent for the farm system…at some point, you let JV and his $20 mil payroll commitment go.
If Cashman loves to overpay for starting pitching
then why didn’t he trade for Ubaldo this year, or Cliff Lee last year?

Antipaths know line ups don’t matter much. And they know crappy pitchers need to be used sometimes.
They just wish the line up was optimized and that crappy pitchers were used in low-leverage situations.

Yes, actually I am
Porcello was at 60 pitches and was cruising on the road. Ther problem with percentages is that they aren’t 100%. COke has not exactly been Mariano Rivera lately and since Rick did not cause the mess let him try and get out of it. Would Leyland have pulled JV – Just asking.
Porcello threw 82.
of course percentages aren’t 100%. That doesn’t mean there’s no use playing them. But of course JL made a herp derp move, because it didn’t work.
