Writing has been on the wall for awhile here.
OK, Mr. Dirks. You’re up.
The acquisition of Young looms even larger now.
Dirks isn't eligible for the postseason roster, is he?
Or will that change with Boesch going on the DL?
He can now be added as an injury replacement for the playoff roster.
If my understanding of playoff roster minutiae serves me well, and it usually doesn’t.
He can be added
to replace Boesch, Zumaya, or Brad Thomas

Getting Delmon Young
Saved our season. Seriously, it did. We may have made the playoffs but we would have backed into em.

I figured as much
Since there weren’t any updates of his improvement. Kind of obvious they were waiting to see if he could play without surgery and have it after the season.
Too bad. I miss him in the lineup.
Agreed on the Delmon Young trade being huge. Otherwise they’d have to piece together two of the three outfield spots instead of just one.

Well, here's the optimist's view
Boesch had been struggling in the 2nd half. I think he was still hitting the ball a lot better than last year’s 2nd half, but his production was way down, regardless. Meanwhile, Maggs has been hitting better of late and currently has a 8-game hitting streak. This development allows us to use a Dirks/Ordonez platoon (although neither player really shows signs of dong better in a platoon setting.)
Further, with Rhymes on the team now, Guillen back, and Santiago being strong lately, we can keep Raburn out of the infield by using him in the OF and one of the others at 2B.
Frankly, it’s a good time for this sort of thing to happen. There are lots of worse injuries that the team could have than Boesch.

true
And fortunately it is a relatively quick process so he’ll have the full offseason to recover.
Listening to him talk about it, and he said the doctors aren’t sure to what degree he was injured before he actually tore the ligament seriously enough to need surgery. He might have been aching for a while even before that swing that finally tore it.

Crap
I’m really kind of angry about this. Leyland used Boesch as a pinch runner the other day, which means he couldn’t retroactively go on the DL. Which means (I think, unless I’m still not understanding the playoff roster rules correctly) we could have called Dirks back up sooner and he could have been on the playoff roster.
if Boesch has surgery
he becomes a third wild card that can be substituted for by anyone who was in the organization on Aug 31 (as long as they’re on or added to the 40 man roster)

Injury replacements are allowed for the playoffs.

Yep
Even if that wasn’t the case, we’re just talking about Dirks here. I don’t think he’ll get much play even with Boesch on the DL. He’s basically a 5th outfielder who’ll share time with Don Kelly.
Warm body
You need those on a team, too, especially in the playoffs, but they don’t get too much time or at bats. Jackson, Young, Maggs and Raburn all more likely.

well let’s hope dirks actually gets some starts against righthanders, rather than just playing maggs every day again.
I expect to see Raburn and Magglio get the bulk of the PT.
Yesterday, Raburn was used to pinch hit for Dirks against a right handed pitcher. That’s telling.
