Smyly, Castellanos, Brantly highlight Tigers' major league invites
The Tigers announced the 18 non-roster players who will receive invitations to major league spring training camp this year. Several names will be familiar to you, doubtlessly, including pitcher Drew Smyly, third baseman Nick Castellanos and catcher Rob Brantly.
The entire list follows:
Righthanded pitcher: Chris Bootcheck
Lefthanded pitchers: Darin Downs, Drew Smyly
Catchers: Rob Brantly, Curt Casali, Bryan Holaday, Patrick Leyland, James McCann, Omir Santos
Infielders: Nick Castellanos, Audy Ciriaco, Argenis Diaz, Ryan Strieby
Infielders/outfielders: Justin Henry, Eric Patterson
Outfielders: Quintin Berry, Jerad Head, Matt Young
The first pitchers and catchers workout is set for Feb. 20, with the full squad working out on Feb. 24.
We'll have an update with quick bios on the players later today.
Updated with short profiles and links to stats.
Just a note here, but there's obviously a lot of catchers. For those who haven't followed closely in the past, that's because it takes a lot of catchers at spring training to make sure all the pitchers get their proper work.
RHP Chris Bootcheck (stats)
33-year-old roster filler who last pitched in the MLB in 2009. He has 90 MLB games under his belt, mostly in relief.
LHP Darin Downs (stats)
9 years in the minor leagues, 27-year-old left hander ... filler.
LHP Drew Smyly (stats)
Well on his way to making it to the MLB, what remains to be seen is if it's with Detroit or another team after a trade.
C Rob Brantly (stats)
2010 third round draftee. Likes to walk.
C Curt Casali (stats)
Last year 10th round draft pick, played at West Michigan briefly.
C Bryan Holaday (stats)
Hard-to-spell last-name. Minor league stats aren't as good as many BYB commenters kept saying they'd be.
C Patrick Leyland (stats)
Bats like his dad.
C James McCann (stats)
Excited Alli. 2011 second-round draft pick.
C Omir Santos (stats)
Bats like Gerald Laird
3B Nick Castellanos (stats)
Excites David. And every GM who talks trades with Dave Dombrowski, probably.
IF Audy Ciriaco (stats)
The 24-year-old hasn't spent much time above Double-A, but has found no success in the little time he's spent
IF Argenis Diaz (stats)
24-year-old infield filler
1B Ryan Strieby (stats)
Blocked in Detroit, had a letdown year in 2011.
2B/OF Justin Henry (stats)
Isn't he in that book The Art of Fielding? In his 5th year in the minor leagues, he sort of broke out in Erie and Toledo, showing power, patience and contact.
IF/OF Eric Patterson (stats)
Insurance piece, really. Doesn't really hit that well but has MLB experience
OF Quintin Berry (stats)
Six seasons in the minor leagues with other organizations. Finally hit for Carolina of the Double-A Southern League last year.
OF Jerad Head (stats)
Made it to the MLB with the Indians last year after 6 years of minor leagues. Has been hitting with power in Triple-A.
OF Matt Young (stats)
Made it to the MLB briefly in 2011 with the Braves. Has managed to find a way to get on base pretty well during his minor league career but doesn't hit for power. 2009 - Southern League Best Hustler

Since every catcher with two eyes gets an invite, I guess the former U of M guy has fallen from grace. His defense and leadership skills are still highly rated.

Bootcheck
I remember this guy with the Angels. Interesting name- like coatcheck, only you check your boots when you come in to an event during the winter or something.
Also, Fu Te Ni was not invited this year. Nor Max St. Pierre, Enrique Gonzalez, or Clete Thomas.

Microsoft really likes this guy, I call their support line today
Me: "My computer screen is all blue with a bunch of numbers and symbols on it."
Microsoft Support Person : "Do have bootcheck yet sir or madam?"
Me: "Do I need one?"
MSP: "You really need a Bootcheck"
So if some person in Ahmedabad, India knows about this guy, I think we should sign him

Thomas is on the 40-man roster.

Ahhh, so he is
I had mentally removed him with the common sense part of the brain.

They organization hadn't done enough charity work by year's end
so they were in the mood to give away a slick fielding SS with speed to a less fortunate team. So Clete’s spot wasn’t needed.
Argenis Diaz
I am not so sure about the “filler” designation. He is only 24 years old. Sounds like he has good range but is error prone, can hit, and walk a bit. He could add some power as he grows and turn into a very low cost serviceable backup. He was playing in Venezuela at 17 and in Rookie Ball at 19 for the Red Sox. They could not hang on to him because his minor league service clock ran out. I would trade him straight up for Danny Worth right now. He may end up as a cautionary tale of signing Venezuelans too young and losing their rights before they grow into major league ball players. Of course the Tigers have a bunch young Venezuelans, so it may be a hard lesson.
You're the first person I've even heard speak of this guy as more than filler
What do you know that we don’t?
When you say he can hit a little, you really should emphasize the word “little” as in singles, if anything. His highest average has been .284 in the last 5 years…most years, he’s more projectable for .250-.260 and there’s zero power and minimal speed.
I do agree that the signings of such young players can really push the fish-or-cut-bait decision. It will be interesting to see how the Tigers handle players like Adelin Santa and Danry Vasquez if their clocks start running low.

Family Affair
There may be a spring training game where the GM’s daughter sings the National Anthem, the Assistant GM’s son starts at catcher and is replaced by the manager’s son. Who knows, maybe the grandson of the Special Assistant to the GM is brought over from the minor league complex as a fill in.
these are the 18 players not on the 40-man roster
Turner’s on the 40 so he’s already invited

I do not understand why
With an All-Star at catcher and an experienced backup signed as a free agent, the Tigers are taking six non-roster catchers to camp.
Either it’s just a “make sure we have catchers for all of our pitchers to throw to” thing or the “get Alex more rest than he had last year” thing is starting early and aggressively.

Pitchers and catchers start camp early
If you showed up with a catchers mitt, they’d probably put you to work too.
More arms to catch early on means you need more people to catch them.

They always invite a boat load of catchers to work with the pitchers
As the number of pitchers is pared down, there will be more catchers assigned to minor league camp as well. They’re not even really restricted to the players that get a formal invite in terms of the grapefruit league games. They can stick anyone in there at a given time.
"King of Minutiae"
I'm guessing, perhaps incorrectly, that it's for all of side sessions and such
There are so many pitchers in camp and every pitcher needs a catcher to throw to every time they throw. I guess it makes a bit of sense. You shouldn’t have a bunch of nuts unless you have a bunch of bolts.

Relief Pitchers
Not many on this list…. Where is Weinhardt or even Wise ?,
Apparently add IF Niuman Romero.
I’m on my phone and having trouble linking to MLBTR.

Apparently no invitation to camp, according to Beck.
AA filler. Another Venezuelan teenage signing that came to nothing in particular . . .
Aren't castellanos and smyly
On the 40 man roster? So why would they need an invite to spring training?

Nope
They don’t have to be protected from the Rule 5 draft until they’ve been in the minors for 4 years.
40 man roster
Is there any way we can get a list of who is on the 40 man roster right now? That would end some confusion. Thanks Kurt.

I watched him a couple of times in W. Michigan.
Impressive from what I saw (at the A level)
Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.
He should be very good
He’s got a swing tailered to be a very good hitter and the power should increase as he fills out his body (he’s only 19) . The glove isn’t there yet but people have to remember that he’s seeing the game faster than anything he’s ever seen being a year removed from HIGH SCHOOL. All in all the Tigers got a steal when they drafted him and should be in the major’s in 2014 and no later than 2015.

Patrick Leyland
Just needs a mustache and a Marlboro and he’ll be his dad.
