New Tigers fan here
Edit: Help him out, BYB. Consider this a "history of the Detroit Tigers" thread. Rosterbation prohibited. --Rob
hello fellow tigers fans. i just wanted to take a sec to introduce myself to the regs here on the site. i live in TN and honestly never really watched baseball, i guess cuz we don't have a team, i really dunno. but here lately i have gained some interest in more sports and baseball is one of them. so seeing as i was born in michigan i decided to go with the tigers. i have no idea if they are good or not so i wouldn't say i am a bandwagon jumper. anyways I'm not gonna ramble on and on, just wanted to say hey and thanks for accepting me on the site.

Welcome!
As for whether the Tigers are good or not, the “DEFENDING A.L. CENTRAL CHAMPIONS” header should give you a little bit of an idea. Hopefully we can keep some of our key players healthy for longer next season and make a deeper postseason run.
welcome aboard Jared
you definitely made a great choice in choosing the Tigers! this team should definitely be fun to watch next year… and hopefully for the foreseeable future.
you also picked the right spot, because BYB is definitely the best place on the net for everything Tigers… articles, discussion, debates… you name it.

I will tell you what I told my high-school environmental science students in the Bronx
The Detroit Tigers are indisputably the greatest baseball team that has ever existed.

Though I've never met you sir
let alone replied to you on BYB, you have jumped up 30 pages in my book. My brothers are scumbags and root for the Yankees and I can’t stand it. Thanks for sticking up for the great city that is Detroit and mostly the Tigers.

I guess a major question is what do you know about baseball in general?
Do you have some experience watching games, or understanding how the sport works? This would help us to better explain why the Tigers and baseball are amazing.
I Like Pie
Hey, Jared
I’m in the Knoxville area, so if you’re close, maybe we could catch a game at a watering hole sometime.
Welcome Jared!
You’re off to a perfect start. You already know more about the Tigers than some of the folks at MLive.
Welcome to BYB and the D!
If you cant already tell, we’re all a good group of people. I used to comment a lot, but ive been sticking to Twitter (@rothben if you use it), but everybody is always welcome. If you can’t already tell, we’ve got some of the best fans in baseball. The Tigers have a great team this year (minus Brandon Inge of course)! Im sure you will be able to learn all that there is to know soon enough, as most of these people know what theyre talking about! And by the way, refrain from using the ‘M’ (;. Some tips: Its RABURN, NOT RAYBURN. DD is Dave Dombrowski (The Tigers GM, the one that makes all of the player-based moves) JL is Jim Leyland, the on-field manager, JV is Justin Verlander, the best starter in the game! JT is Jacob Turner, our top prospect (Pitcher) NC is Nick Castellanos, our top position prospect. And lastly, dont listen to any commenters from MLive. Welcome again!
Oh, and while youre getting started, STAY AWAY FROM SABERMETRICS!
They will be great later, but they can get pretty confusing for a newcomer!
Not even the fighting
Just the measuring of sabers. It’s the original big dick contest.

It's pretty self explanatory...

Welcome Jared
As you begin to try understand baseball and it’s fans you’ll quickly notice like any other sports team that some of it’s fans are complete lunatics but for the most part everyone here on BYB are real cool this is a great way to learn about the team, the players and it’s fan base. I never really got into blogging much and still don’t outside this site so that should give you some idea of the good work all the contributors do on here.
Just a little more FYI on some of those contributors from what I’ve noticed from my short time here: Kurt is the editor and usually posts all the important info about the team, TIgerdog always provides good commentary from everything I’ve read as does Keith-Allan and Detroit4Lyfe, Madpoopz has some great lines, if you couldn’t figure out by his name Philcokesbrain is the another great commentator (also has his own blog that he posts on from time to time and can get a little wacky but in a good way), if i missed anyone who deserves recognition see below as I’m sure someones been left out…
With that being said: welcome aboard!

I like that. Usually I get “Kurt is $&& ##$!!” so that’s a nice improvement.

My apologies to Alli
I’m sure she does wonderful work as well

wow my post made the main page
you guys are very friendly over, here i like it. all i really know about baseball is the rules somewhat, like i probably couldn’t name 5 current players. so any info bout my tigers is help to me. thanks again to the welcoming committee.
It's hard to learn players during the offseason...
it’s just player transactions at this point and we kinda putz around here making dull jokes (I kid, my jokes are HILARIOUS). We’ll search for things to write (I enjoy pitching mechanics personally) and we’ll start OT threads for people to keep in touch on. It’s hard to learn a game when you aren’t watching the game.
My best advice as someone who was kind of a novice baseball when I started posting here 3 years ago, just ask questions away! We only expect you to be articulate with your thoughts, and thus far you have been. :) So welcome aboard amigo.
Agreed with you Poopz
I’m fascinated with pitching and learning about guys’ repertoire’s and speed of pitchs and whats their plus pithces and what needs work, etc., love everything about pitching.
Like he said with it being the offseason it is a little tough to learn about playersand the game but the best way to learn about them IS to ask questions when you can’t watch the games, everyone will provide info and throw a joke around every now and again. While baseball has alot of nuances, I, like you knew very basic rules growing up but learned alot when I started watching the Tigers in depth in 2004 so til then don’t be afraid to ask
Take off your white wig, put down your gavel and stop judging...
Best thing to do is to spend some time reading us
Or just about the Tigers in general

Leaders and the best
Hi Jared,
I pretty much lurk, but I’ve been reading this site since right around when Ian started. It’s by far one of the best baseball sites on the web, and we have a really great community here. People are knowledgeable, accepting and have a pretty good sense of humor. Really, you couldn’t have picked a better place to be a fan, or a better baseball team to be a fan of.
The Tigers are a great team to root for and suffer with. They started way back in 1894, and are the only team left from the Western League, a league that existed before MLB consolidation. They’ve been great — through the ’30s and ’40s — and been absolutely wretched — the ’50s through mid ’60s — and back again. Just eight years ago, they were the losingest team in American League history. Last year, they won the division and would have gone to the world series if not for terrible weather in Texas.
The Tigers have some great names that you should know if you’re a fan of baseball at all. Ty Cobb, baseball’s biggest bastard and legendary small ball player, was a Tiger. Four times, Cobb got to first on a walk or a single, then stole second, then stole third, then stole home. The Tigers also had Hank Greenberg, who has been called America’s most important Jew — he was the best slugger of his era, and he refused to play on Yom Kippur, which brought Jewish identity to the forefront of American consciousness. Folks like Al Kaline and Mickey Lolich, heroes of the ’68 team, still get talked about.
For the modern era, we won the series in ‘68 and also ’84 (’84 had Alan Trammel, Kirk Gibson, and Jack Morris). ‘84 is where we get the “Bless You Boys” slogan — it was sarcastic at first, but we won and won in ’84, and that’s when a lot of us here became fans of both Tigers and baseball in general. We made it to the world series in 2006, and we’ve been contenders pretty much every year since, barring a couple crappy collapses.
Right now, we have two major marquee players: Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera. Verlander’s probably the best pitcher of his generation, and won both the Cy Young and MVP last year. Miguel Cabrera’s a batting monster, probably the best batter in the MLB after Albert Pujols. (Also, we have Don Kelly, our mascot. He’s a wizard who does everything OK, but nothing great.)
One other thing to mention about the Tigers — for most of our lives, they had the best announcer in baseball, Ernie Harwell. Harwell was one of the last great announcers, full of folksy lines like, “He stood there like a house on the side of the road.”
If you’ve got any more questions, feel free to ask — the guys do a good job at answering ’em and giving primers on SABR (actual scientific-type stats, as opposed to the common but weak ones like ERA) that will make you a better baseball fan on the whole.
Welcome!
thanks
that write was very useful, i guess i need to get a better understanding of the game. like positions and things of that nature. my buddy thats stationed here in kuwait with me is a big baseball fan, he can also help me with positions. but i think the more i understand positions and what each player does, i can start to learn names and appreciate the tigers more. good to see that we have one of the best pitchers and batters in the league tho.
oh and btw
i’ll never lose the M. i bleed blue lol.

But the Tigers are my first love by a wide margin. As far as UM and MSU I will root for whoever stands a better chance to represent the Great State of Michigan.

A new Tiger fan eh : )
Well 1st thing to exprience what it was like to be a Tigers fan from the years 2000 till 2005 take yourself in the back yard and punch yourself repeatdly in the crotch, and remember that feeling. Now to know what it was like to be a Tigers fan from the years 2006 till 2011 take yourself out for a good burger and a beer and have your wife or girl friend give you a nice back massage afterward. That’s how much better now than it was then. Consider yourself luckly to be joining our brother hood in a good era… WELCOME…
So ya wanna be a Tiger fan?
It’s a long, hard road.
Every 20 years or so, the Tigers win something. While that’s better’n a team like the Cubs … it still makes for some lonely nights.
‘68 and ’84. The team was fully in line historically to win in ’06. Considering an awful Cardinal team and the fact that many Tigers had their career year … one could say a WS title in ’06 was almost inevitable. Alas, it didn’t happen. No one can explain why, even to this day.
One hopes as a veteran Tiger fan(let alone, a NEW Tiger fan), that the ‘06 miscue didn’t reset the 20 year watch on a Tiger World Series all over again.
If you’d like to see ‘your’ team win a World Series, you could do worse than picking the Tigers. It’s been proven that WS winners always have a HOF player or two on their roster. The Tigers right now have two such players, and they are just entering their prime. That means if the General Manager of the Tigers has even a smidgen of ability and puts enough ‘average’ players around these two HOF candidates … sooner or later the Tigers are going to win at least one WS. At least, chances are.
Welcome to being a Tiger fan. The over-riding thing you’ll find about Tiger fans? They are easy-going wonderful people. The kind of people who will applaud the play of an opposing baseball’er if he makes a superior play … even if said play contributes to a Tiger loss. You’ll see it often from Tiger fans. They are knowledgable, and love baseball.
Stick around, the Tigers and their fans are worth it.
Justin can now let the fungus grow back on his shower shoes.
Tigers fans know suffering.
And know about being overlooked but rooting for their team. We’ll also admit when we are awful… but still root anyhow.
Surviving the 1990s and early 2000s was pretty neat!
I have a grand idea: let's win a game.
Hey, I was born in TN and am a Tiger fan!
I hereby declare Michigan to be the baseball default for the state of Tennessee. Individuals may opt out if they are able to show compelling special circumstances.
For Ernie. For.Sparky. For Magglio. For ME
Hi Jared!
Welcome aboard. If you have a friend to help you figure out the positions that will be a big help. Just watch the games and you will figure out how it works soon enough. :)
