My Idea to Solve the V-Mart Problem
I just posted this as a comment on DesigNate Robertson and decided to put it up here to see if you guys had any thoughts on it.
Pena is the best option. If Billy Beane has taught us anything, it's that it doesn't matter how you get on base, but that you do. Pena has the Adam Dunn Effect, not that he will suck when he is DH, but that he walks so much, his BA doesn't matter. Then when you compare Pena to Damon, Pena actually has a better K/BB ratio. He also has far better power and would give some protection to Cabrera while Damon and Vlad would do no such thing.
I suppose you could make the argument to get both and trade DY for an average 2B/3B. I like Edwin Encarnacion I think that would be the best way to try and replace Victor. It could even make the team more complete than with just V-Mart.
1. Austin Jackson CF
2. Johnny Damon LF
3. Brennan Boesch RF
4. Miguel Cabrera 1B
5. Carlos Pena DH
6. Jhonny Peralta SS
7. Alex Avila C
8. Ramon Santiago/Ryan Raburn 2B
9. Edwin Encarnacion 3B
I don't know if this is 'rosterbation' but it's my personal solution to a big problem. We would have a good number of left/right handed batters. Damon would be a good #2 batter and could mentor Jackson. Boesch would see some great pitches like DY did this year. Pena would protect Cabrera. And Encarnacion is a good fix for the dreaded Inge/Kelly platoon. I'm perfectly content with a 2B platoon. When V-Mart comes back, we can just slide him right in where I have Pena. So, thoughts?

With Encarnacion at 3B, you'd need a SS with better range.
Damon can’t play LF anymore.
Don’t like Pena full-time at DH since he can’t hit lefties.
I do agree with everyone that thinks Carlos Pena is the best option. Fangraphs done a nice piece on how a Pena/Raburn platoon would get us some decent numbers. Not sure if Pena will sign in Detroit to play in a platoon role though.
then again Delmon Young can't play LF ever.
So I see your point.

That was what I was getting at
They are both awful defenders, but Damon seems to be the lesser of two evils.
If you can get Pena to DH against righties
then you can maximize your 2B platoon with Raburn and Santiago who both hit lefties very well.
A couple other third base options are...
Scott Rolen, Eric Chavez, Wilson Betemit, and if we wanted to sell the farm, David Wright.
I'm on board with Pena
and actually really want us to sign him to DH/spell Miggy at first.
But I do not want Damon for LF. No arm, and I really don’t think he can play the outfield anymore.

I don't mind Pena, but your argument is in conflict with itself
Do you want Pena because he walks a lot? If so, does that really protect Cabrera? Will people be scared of walking Cabrera because the guy behind him will take balls? If when Pena forces the pitcher to throw a strike, he doesn’t get hits nearly 80% of the time. Pena is a valuable player, but not a #5 hitter.
If Pena’s your man, bat him at #2 or 3 where his primary OBP skill makes more sense than at #5.
And like others have said, Damon doesn’t make the team better; his offense and defense are both as bad or worse than Delmon…it just adds another useless piece. Fukudome would most likely put up much better offense and defense than Damon.
Delmon has nearly no trade value based on his extensive faults (defense and OBP) and a 6.5M salary. I will continue to preach this opinion. I don’t hate Delmon, but he simply doesn’t have trade value.

I agree with almost all of this
I just don’t know if I like Pena in 2 or 3 spot. I think it is mainly a product of old fashioned baseball in my head but I just want a contact guy in those spots and even though Pena gets on base a lot he doesn’t have the combination of contact/walk ability I would like there.
With a projected 6/7 combination of Peralta and Avila I think people will be scared to walk both Miggy and Pena so one and/or both of them will see a lot of hit-able strikes.
100% agree with your Delmon feelings though.
I agree, if Pena...then 5 spot
If Cabrera walks then Pena’s outcome likely to be walk, K or HR…
A walk puts two on base for Peralta / Avila and a HR scores two.
I actually think this idea is pretty good
Not sure we could do Delmon for Encarcion, and I’m thinking Damon might not be the best choice in LF, but this is at least different. And it solves lots of problems all at once.
It’s the type of thinking I expect out of Dombrowski.

I'll probably get kicked out for saying this but...
Sign Maggs to a one year deal, inject him with so much HGH he plays like he did in 2007. When he gets busted hopfully it’s around the trading deadline and we can afford to bring over a big bat to replace him when he’s suspended. Sorry folks thats all I got : (
Poll
I’d like to see a poll set up in one of these posts to see who thinks what.
At this point I’m thinking Carlos Pena would be the front-runner.
I wonder, if you could have Pena for $10 million, Carlos Lee for $10 million and Damon or Vlad for $6… who would you choose?
I honestly think Lee is under-valued at this point, and Houston has said they would pay half of his contract ($19 million) to make a deal. He’s my pick with Pena in second place.
I would much rather a solid LF (I’d been hoping for Prado and Dejesus to be Tigers), but there’s nothing left on the FA Market.

Right now
I am leaning toward Pena. I always like him when he was with the Tigers (I have a thing for Tigers 1B ever since my favorite player was Darrell Evans) and think he fits the best in the 5 hole behind Miggy out of the available FA’s.
Another part of me thinks that Maggs would be a good, and probably cheaper, option. Mainly because of…well…2006! Seriously, Maggs would improve the top of the order in the second or third spot and moving Boesch or Young to the 5 spot would still provide some protection for Miggy (I think Boesch more than Young provides that protection). Also…2006!!!
I haven't seen any
But I definitely listed him as a possibilty. One year left on his contract, potential power and should be had for next to nothing. I’d take it.

They spent a good time on it on Grand Rapids sports radio
Makes sense him as our DH, gettting a little older, never like the prospect of bringing over a NL hitter to the AL and become a DH though. I went over his numbers and looked very good if we got him on the cheap, Houston would be even willing to pay for some of his massive contract from what I hear.
Here’s my thoughts, Pena is younger but does not give you good at bats all the time he’ll hit for power but that’s what Miggy for and we need some one to move the base runners. Vlad is aging quickly and don’t think he’ll be able to produce for the entire year. Johnny D is another option, he could take over lead off, hit for avg, and put the ball into play. But there’s not that chance for a big year, the Tigers are looking to steal some one who might be able to give them one year of magic, in comes Lee. Stuck on a bad team for so long, he might be able to produce the kind of season Vlad did with Texas for one year, he’ll know he’ll be on a playoff team so maybe he can give us one season of magic. what would be a steal and one season of magic from him a 285avg. 25HR and 100 RBI would be just the steal were looking for. Sounds far fetched but a player on a new team, a playoff team none the less could be just the kick in the ass he needs…
I see where you went wrong
1) you’re listening to sports radio.
Please at least tell us it wasn’t the huge show.

the huge show lol
Bill Simonson is an absolute joke.
my guess if he was listening in the GR area it was ESPN 96.1… and probably Sean Baligian’s It Is What It Is Show, or Ryan Terpstra’s show that comes on right after Sean’s. I get 96.1 here in Kalamazoo and those aren’t that bad.

I like Carlos Lee as a #5 hitter
I prefer Pena as a #3 hitter.
I think Lee would be “cheaper” overall. There’s some wiggle room the Tigers have here. Better prospect probably equals more money the Astros eat. At a base level, I bet the Astros would eat half without any prospect whatsoever. That makes him about the same price as Pena.
Either way, Carlos would be fine. (See what I did there?)

Allen Craig, Matt Carpenter and Kyle McClellen from the Cards for Turner. Craig could play right or DH, Carp is a 3rd basemen who has averaged an obp over .400 in the minors and McClellen for a 5th starter. Craig is blocked in St Louis and has averaged over 20 homers per year and hit over .300 at every level in the minors, plus he is cost controlled for 6 years.
And the Cards are in win-now mode

I'm with Rob and David
But I gotta give Bryce some credit for thinking outside of the box at least…
That would be a nice move for us. From what I’ve seen of Craig, I’d think he could hit 2nd for us right away (off of his injury). Sign Damon to hit lead-off and we’d have that revamped top of the order we’ve been seeking. Plus, isn’t Craig under team control for a few years?

I don't fault him at all for the idea, I liked it too
I just don’t think it’s feasible, unfortunately.

I keep saying we should do a prospect swap
Shelby Miller and Matt Carpenter for Jacob Turner and Nick Castellanos.
Cards take a step down at SP, but they also get a better hitting prospect, and Detroit solves a need at 3B now (when we need it) as opposed to later.

Craig is injured now I believe
Not that I would nix the trade because of that, but he won’t be ready for the start of the season.

Make a push for....
Michael Young,I know this was brought up last year, but there is no better time to do it than NOW !!! If the Rangers would consider a few minor leagers like Oliver,Crosby,Below,or anyone other than Turner and Castannelos (spelling ?),I say go for it,Also add Juan Pierre to bat leadoff and I think that would make us just as strong if not stronger than we were with Victor….I’m hoping we can somehow pull off a trade for a veteran HITTER.(just not Vlad,or any of those over the hill has-been players)
Cory Smith
Why would the Rangers want to deal a major league player when they're contending?

To help the Tigers, of course.

Glad that lineup can't happen
Sheesh..DYoung is not that much worse than RaBuM if LF plus when he steps to the plate it’s “game on” on every pitch. We are lucky we signed him b4 VMart went down..Very Lucky. I may like Damon to DH and bat leadoff but he is useless in the OF now. Benemit didn’t play bad for us. Why not sign him. He is a hitter to all fields. Can’t see why they don’t like him. Oh sure he may not be a real good 3B but he does hit and always has.
My one burning question...
Why do you capitalize the ‘B’ when you write “RaBuM”? The ‘R’ at the start is a function of the proper name. I’m guessing the ‘M" at the end is to draw attention to the witty way you used his name to express your distaste for him, but I just can’t figure out why the ‘B’ is capitalized.
