Yoenis Cespedes hits first DR home run

After all the Victor Martinez discussions yesterday, here's a tangentially related video of Yoenis Cespedes hitting his first home run in the Dominican Republic's winter league action.

However, before that Cespedes was struggling a bit. He is now 3-for-23 (.130) with no walks and six strikeouts, Baseball America reports. The home run came on a 3-2 count when the Houston Astros' Rhiner Cruz threw a 97 mph fastball.

Enjoy the video ... after the jump.

Well...

He’s faster around the bases on his homerun trot than Victor is on a double.

He is bigger than I thought

I haven’t watched his “look at me” video so I was a little surprised about how built he is.

Other than that, at least we know he can get around on outside heat.

Saves the knees...

I wonder how fast he can get up to throw to 2nd.

Maybe he crouches traditionally when throwing to 2B

I noticed that nobody was on when Cespedes went yard.

The Phillies Catcher

Calos Ruiz, does the same thing with nobody on. It allows him to give a lower target more comfortably.

How major leage ready is he???

I’m sure there is a learning curve, would he start out in the minors, could he get up to speed by the allstar break.

Go balls out for the kid hoping he’ll be ready after the allstar break. Till than sign a vet DH, and for some reason I don’t want to see Pena, we need a guy who can at least put the ball in play, Pena is not that type…

a safe assumption (if he were a Tiger)

is that he’d start off in Florida before joining the team midseason if everything goes well.

I can see why the scouts rave

that bat speed is fantastic. Unfortunately he does everything but pop the chain after he hits it.

lol...

Yeah, that stuck out to me too. I would hope he curbs his enthusiasm a bit, but then again, if he hits ’em like that on a regular basis he can do the electric slide around the bases for all I care.

Give Jose a run for his money.

Cavaet Emptor

Turns out Fausto carmona has been pitching under an assumed name for the Indians all this time.

He’s also 31 years old, not the 28 the Indians think.

Visa problems might now become an issue for Fausto to continue to make his living in the States.

Does this pertain in any way to Cepedes? You decide.

not really

Cuba has some of the best medical facilities in the Caribbean. It’s possible they have shoddy recordkeeping, but I’d wager they are pretty accurate. Plus he defected, if he wasn’t the age he says maybe the Cuban government might leak his real age to screw him over a bit?
