Fausto Carmona Arrested in the Dominican Republic
Carmona, or should I say Roberto Hernandez Heredia, was arrested on charges of using a false identity to obtain a U.S. Visa. He is actually 31 years old, not 28.

So far this off season, EVERYTHING is working out for the Indians
First, I wanted(as many others)Grady in LF instead of Delmon. The money and commitment were about the same. We got Delmon, the Injuns got Grady. Advantage: Indians.
Then, Victor gets hurt while working out. Advantage: Indians.
Then, Fausto gets caught doing his Mrs Doubtfire impression. Which means he will no longer be in their rotation. Which means somebody else will be cheesing against the Tigers. Advantage: Indians.
This has been some kind of crappy off season.

Yeah, I know
Still. Fausto(or whatever his name is)out of the Indians rotation will mean one less BP pitcher for whoever our DH is this season.
They subtract Fausto, we’ll probably add Damon or some other gawdawful solution.
It’s enough to make me throw my tumbler of scotch on the lawn, I’m tellin’ ya.

It's one thing if one of those pitchers they add is Drew Pomeranz
But the Indians already gave up their stud prospects last season in the Jimenez deal. We’re not talking about the Twins here, who would bring up some no-name white guy who would throw 7 innings of one-run baseball in 89 pitches against us.

Fausto was(and is)a BP throwing, bases on balls machine
The Tigers WANT him on the hill for the Indians. I don’t care who the Indians replace him with if Fausto(or Mrs Doubtfire if you prefer)can’t get a Visa this summer. Whoever replaces Mrs Doubtfire will still have some unknown about them.
With Fausto, there was no unknown. He stunk. The only thing unhittable he threw was a pitch out of the zone. The story was out on him. If it started in the zone, it would end up out of the zone and batters layed off. If it started out of the zone, then it would end up a meatball over the heart or 3 feet outside.
Fausto was/is the kind of pitcher that guys can make a living against.
If Fausto can’t get into the US this spring, this will be addition by subtraction for the Indians. There won’t be a single Central Division hitter who will be happy with our State Dept.
I’m hoping Fausto(nee: Robin Williams in drag)gets a stamp on his passport about a week before the season starts and the Indians put him in their rotation without provocation. Are the Indians that desperate? One can only hope.

Carmona's BB/9 has hovered around 3.0 over the past two seasons
While that’s not spectacular by any means, it doesn’t mean he’s a “base on balls machine.” I’m not arguing he’s an All-Star by any means (though he was in 2010), but it’s not like the Indians are going to replace him with Roy Halladay. They are replacing suck with suck.
If you waste a glass of single malt
I will hit you.
Now if it’s blended junk like dewars or Johnny walker then it’s acceptable.

You know, in Scotland...
They make fun of Americans who think like that. At least in my experience. The most expensive bottles I could find in Edinburgh were all blends when I was there this summer.
That being said, I prefer single malt speysides myself.
On topic, I’m not too worried about this having any major impact on the central race. The multiple identies thing really is an odd trend though.

JW Blue
I insist

I could buy 4 bottles of what I like for the cost of blue
And it’s a much smoother, better drink than JW Blue
Try the cragganmore-it’s amazing

Macallan 18
Fine SM.
Although to be honest, the 15 is actually better and cheaper. Just, the 15 is hard to find.
The 12? Don’t bother.

Don't like the Macallan
Love the cragganmore. It’s without doubt, my fav.
The yamazaki sun toro is really good too, but hard I find. Plus all the scotch elitists refuse to acknowledge that it’s a single malt because it’s made in Japan, but regardless of where it’s made, it’s a fantastic drink.

"Which means he will no longer be in their rotation."
I wouldn’t necesarily assume that at all. He’s still the same guy. He still has a contract with the Indians. I wouldn’t assume that he can’t get a visa under his real name if he has a job here.
What is with these Dominicans?
I know Latinos have long, complex names, but what’s with all of the alter egos? Is it that much easier to get a US visa with a different name (and age). I do get the age part, but I…. dunno.
look at it this way
If you could find a 16 year old with Turners current skill set in Latin America his ceiling is theoretically higher than an 18 year old with Turners current skill set. So he has more people interested, so he gets a larger signing bonus. Since it is easier to assume a younger person’s identity in certain parts of latin america (not trying to be racist for those that think that stating that is racist) and the difference in signing bonus could be pretty significant, a lot of them do it.
not racist
Just mostly a matter of less rigorous record keeping. If I wanted to try to assume a younger person’s identity, I’d run into difficulties with my social security number, driver’s license, birth certificate, passport, even things like my bank accounts and retirement plan and such. When I was younger it would have been school enrollment records as well.
In many countries in Latin America there isn’t the same level of attention paid to records of identity, so when a kid is starting out on a career he has some ability to fuss with his past and there isn’t a simple way to check on the accuracy of the information.

The article didn't answer any of my questions
Does this mean that Carmona’s contract is void and that he can’t pitch for the Indians?
I think that's yet to be determined...
But you would have to believe the Tribe will take action to void the deal.
I'm owner/editor of The Wayne Fontes Experience a deputy editor at Bless You Boys, host the Bless You Boys Podcast and co-host The Knee Jerks podcast.
That's what I'm wondering
They’ve picked up a $ 7 million option
Does the change in his age or his name materially alter what they’re expecting to get from him?
If he’s not able to come back into the country, it surely does. No way they have to pay him if he’s not there. But if he sorts it out, do they ask MLB to void the deal and make him a free agent? Not so sure.
The Tribe are still very interested in Carlos Pena, too.
"King of Minutiae"
I think they still want him
but I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to restructure the deal so that it isn’t so back end heavy.
I agree with what you said below…at 12 Million I don’t think they want him in two year. I imagine that MLB would give them first rights to work out a deal and if they don’t want too then he would be released to be a free agent.
Yes.
At the time he lied about his identity, it gives the Indians an out clause to opt out of the contract. It’s at their discretion and could again resign him if they wanted and would also still own his rights as a player so they would have first shot to give him a contract if they wanted

Well . . .
(1) They have a difficult argument that a three year difference in his age is material to a 1-year, $7 million contract.
(2) The real problem is, he’s going to have visa trouble. Hadr to say how much of an obstacle that will prove to him
for 1
Since the contract was given based on expected performance and it is proven that advancing age generally reduces performance they will be able to argue that they are not getting the service agreed upon, not to mention that when he signed it he probably signed it Fausto Carmona….he isn’t Fausto Carmona he is some other name so really he has no basis to demand money since the signing is technically a forgery.
Touche.

What if
the real J Peterman Fausto Carmona shows up to collect his paycheck?
What a fraud!
I suppose it’s common in the DR, but I would have to believe that this would allow the Tribe to void his contract if they were inclined to do so. They’ve picked up a $ 7 million option for 2012, and they have club options for $ 9 million and $ 12 million the next two seasons. His odds of getting those two picked up aren’t very good right now.
