Morosi: Tigers "on the fringe" of Talks for Roy Oswalt

Jon Paul Morosi has tweeted:
Sources: #Tigers are on fringe of Roy Oswalt sweepstakes, not as involved as #RedSox at the moment. But situation is fluid. Boston has traded Marco Scutaro to Colorado for pitcher Clayton Mortensen, clearing $ 6 million from their payroll. Reports had indicated that Boston would need to trim payroll if they were to pursue Oswalt. Many of us would love to see the Tigers sign Oswalt.

that Scutaro trade only makes sense

if Boston signs Oswalt

Raburn-Santiago '12

They will apparently platoon Mike Aviles and Nick Punto at SS

I’m a bit puzzled. Scutaro would be a nice fit at 2B for the Tigers too, IMO.

Boston got Clayton Mortensen for Scutaro. Mortensen would be about comparable to Andy Oliver or so. Just breaking into the majors, 5.12 ERA, 13 starts, only 4.7 K/ BB but a decent GB rate, 1.50 WHIP. He was once dealt to the Rockies from Oakland in the Matt Holliday trade.

Thought the same thing

The tigers could have feasibly jumped on him at the price Boston set. Andy Oliver + a fringe guy would have gotten the deal done in hindsight.

However, if Detroit snakes Oswalt, then I can’t complain about the offseason at all, minus the vmart injury.

Are the Tigers intent on actually adding anyone?

Or are we just happy to let big salaries walk away and do nothing to replace them? Because if that’s the gameplan, fine. If not, what in God’s name is DD doing?

Well done, sir.

Oswalt

Forget the DH types, get Oswalt.

by Bigpaw on Jan 21, 2012 10:07 PM EST reply actions

Roy would have a bigger impact in the W column, IMO

unless the DH was, like, a Prince or something….

Not worried any way's

DD probably knows he can get what ever he needs for the postseason run after the All star break, probably alot cheaper too…

Do it Rockapella!

I have a grand idea: let's win a game.

Is it becoming more clear that Turners gonna be out 5th starter?

I would be OK with that. But I’d rather get a vet and maybe let Turner come in later in the season.

Just a matter of time

Before Magglio’s name comes up. What the heck, I gave up on Ordonez two years ago, but I’d prefer him to Damon. Oh, and count me in for Oswalt – the price is right, the time is right.

I already brought it up, on the podcast :)

a bit tongue in cheek, but what the hey!
If we keep Raburn out there because of his second half numbers, then why not Magglio? Dude tore it up last September.

Ordonez

Minus Victor, the whole equation is changed. I railed against keeping Ordonez as a right fielder, but as a DH/emergency outfielder, he’s still better than many of the names being tossed around.

by Bigpaw on Jan 22, 2012 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

Lot of IF's in that equation

IF Maggs is healthy and IF he’s hitting like we know he can when he’s hot, and has done down the stretch when not on the DL. IF we get that Magglio, he’s a pure hitter. His power is gone at this point.

I would not even go the DH route, personally. I’d put Delmon at DH, Raburn in LF (curing two defensive nightmares) and get an infielder, like a lefty bat to platoon with Santiago or Inge.

Didin't Magglio reinjure that same problematic ankle during the playoffs? Yes he did.

That to me was the writing on the wall that his career is over. Every time he gets it going, it’s late in the year and/or he gets hurt. Hopefully he’ll go out on a high note. I really don’t want to see him decline anymore than we already have.

Per Danny Knobler on Twitter...

Oswalt refused an agressive pursuit by Tigers. He doesn’t want to come to Detroit, so that’s that.
