Looking At Some Remaining Free Agents.
The Tigers have recently been linked to such names as Hideki Matsui, Raul Ibanez, Johnny Damon, Roy Oswalt, and Juan Pierre (yuck). A heap of other flawed, but cheap, players remain on the market too. If Detroit were to sign one of them, which would you like to see them sign.
Hideki Matsui, LH, DH, LF:
3 year batting line and OPS+: .266/.349/.445, 113
Last year's bWAR: 0.0
Notables: Coming off worst season of career, injury risk
Raul Ibanez, LH, DH, LF:
3 year batting line and OPS+: .264/.329/.469, 111
Last year's bWAR: -0.4
Notables: Turns 40 next season, has seen a sharp drop in performance since 2009
Johnny Damon,LH, DH, LF:
3 year batting line and OPS+: .271/.348/.436, 111
Last year's bWAR: 2.8
Notables: Popular, can still occasionally steal a base, getting close to 3000 career hits, isn't coming off a bad season
Roy Oswalt, RH, SP:
3 year K/9, BB/9, and ERA: 7.2/ 2.2/ 3.47
Last year's bWAR: 1.7
Notables: Great for a 3rd/4th starter, trade bait if we want to call Turner up mid season, leaves our offense in bad shape
Juan Pierre, LH, LF:
3 year batting line and OPS+: .284/.342/.338 85
Last year's bWAR: 0.0
Notables: Lead-off style hitter, upgrades nothing
Vlad Guerrero, RH, DH, RF:
3 year batting line and OPS+: .295/.332/.458 109
Last year's bWAR: 0.1
Notables: 3 year stats inflated by his season in Texas
Derrek Lee, RH, 1B:
3 year batting line and OPS+: .278/.357/.486 122
Last year's bWAR: 1.1
Notables: can still play first base, 3 year stats inflated by his 2009 season
There are a other guys out there like Magglio Ordonez, Wilson Betemit, Russel Branyan, and Pat Burrell. More or less they all fill the same style. Which one would you like to see the most next season?

After doing my above research,
I think the Tigers should give up on upgrading their offense and just stick Boesch behind Cabrera next year. Oswalt gives us the most clear shot at an upgrade, although he will likely have the highest price tag amongst those remaining.
For the bats you might only want to look at offensive WAR
Considering that they’ll take a hit for not playing the field.

Probably should have,
but for the most part I don’t think it makes much of a difference. Derrek Lee and Juan Pierre were the only two to get significant playing time in the field last year.
Juan Pierre gets my vote
but only if he comes dirt cheap. I love how his speed puts pressure on the infield defense. He’ll drive people nuts with his bunting too.
He'll drive people nuts with his bunting . . .
. . . mostly, Detroit fans . . .
exactly
but not me. I love small ball. One of my favorite teams of all-time is the Cardinals from the 1980’s. They had speed and defense like you wouldn’t believe. Vince Coleman, Ozzie Smith, Willie McGee, Tom Herr, Terry Pendleton. Jack Clark was the only power hitter they had.

TRADE for the Victor replacement
Lots to choose from on 2013 Free Agent Tracker at mlb trade rumors – The list for this year has already been cherry picked and Fielder is the only Free agent left that has real value. Since Mr I isn’t going to spent 30 nillion for one year try and pry lose and impending free agent with prospects and maybe Ryan Raburn thrown in.
Betemit, finish off bullpen
Betemit at 3B with Inge to platoon with. Move Kelly to 2B (123 games in the minors) to platoon with Sanitago. Moved Raburn to LF with Dirks being the 4th fielder and Young as the DH. We have better D at 2B and LF. We have poor D until Tigers get ahead or when Inge plays. Raburn not a bad LF once you overlook the odd drop fly ball or giving the other team a HR.
Not an awful idea here
There are only two concerns.
First, did they burn the Betemit bridge in the playoffs? Leyland clearly didn’t want him playing in the most important games of the season. I bet that either Leyland doesn’t want him or Betemit doesn’t want to come back because of this.
Second, Raburn can’t be trusted with a regular job. If Raburn hits like Raburn typically hits in the first half, we don’t have much of a fallback here…other than Andy Dirks. Most feel that Dirks is not an answer as a regular player. However, the defense would improve. With regular playing time, I can see Dirks as a 1 – 2 WAR player.

I really like this idea.
It’s really too bad that Leyland hated Betemit.
I didn't help that Betemit was sporting a knee injury either.
He was just last in a long line of thegimpy players we had on the roster.
The org hates Betemit for some reason
But otherwise, that’s not so bad.

Sign Oswalt
Helps our rotation, you made a great point that he can be turned into trade bait if needed.
To help our line up but I’m starting to lean toward Maggs again, If he can DH he MIGHT be able to stay heathy. V-mart was all about a great batting AVG. and putting the ball into play. Maggs probably won’t match V-marts batting AVG. but I’d fee safe he could go .290 or .300 avg. and he can put the ball into play.
He's not married to Katy Perry anymore
No thanks.

He Who Shall Not Be Named?
I don’t think I have heard anybody speak the name “Rick Ankiel” in any of our posts so far. I understand he is very hit-or-miss, but the guy can play the OF and his right (non-throwing) arm is better than Damon’s.
Ankiel would chip in 15-20 HR’s hitting in the 7 or 8 slot too, and swings left-handed, if you are into that sort of thing.
He’ll come cheap. Would do you think?
Also— put me down as being pro-Pierre as well, even though most people will give him the R-A-Y-B-U-R-N-E treatment in here…

I might be okay with this
He’s not a great player, but he isn’t horrible and his glove/arm are passable at least.
Pierre, on the other hand, can fall into a nice steaming bath of retirement.

you know how much Leyland loves to mix and match lineups
Maybe Ankiel can pitch every 5th day, too.

That just gave me an idea
Dontrelle Willis for DH?

Not bad but
I’d rather have Don Kelly pitch in an emergency.

ugh
without a clear better way to go the best thing is to do nothing! oswalt said no and pierre? not no but hell no! i cant count how many times i heard our broadcast team and others for that matter talk about what an albatross pierres contract was.i seem to remember just a couple seasons ago the tigers having to eat money on contracts, were in a much better position now.i still think going the cespedis route is the better option.i just dont see a option out there thats worth it.
